Before “ER,” “Chicago Hope” and “The Good Doctor,” there was a great little medical drama called “St. Elsewhere.” Today, it’s not unusual to have topics like rape, abortion, domestic abuse, breast cancer discussed. But 40 years ago, such issues were taboo. Much as “Hill St. Blues” revolutionized police dramas in the early 1980s, “St. Elsewhere” pushed boundaries and opened discussions about issues that affected viewers everywhere.
“St. Elsewhere” refers to hospitals who take in the patients no other hospital wants to deal with; the fictitious St. Eligius is such an institution in Boston, a teaching hospital with more budget issues than personnel. But within the crumbling walls is a staff of doctors and nurses who struggle to provide the best care possible for the string of often difficult to diagnose, difficult to understand and difficult to tolerate patients who come through the doors, while balancing their personal lives and own...

Trailblazing medical drama series “St. Elsewhere” celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 26. Gold Derby recently gathered together 10 cast members of the NBC program for a special reunion. All episodes from the six-season original run are now available for streaming on Hulu.
The series never had the greatest of overall ratings but was saved time and again by the Peacock network due to its Emmy wins and nominations, plus excellent demographics among the 18-49 viewers who advertisers coveted. The show was set at the fictional Boston hospital St. Eligius (nicknamed St. Elsewhere because its rundown conditions), tackling topical medical subjects with unexpected deaths among the patients and staff members throughout the six seasons airing 1982-1988.

The Primetime Emmy Awards were unable to capitalize on its historic and diverse nomination fields, with all major acting trophies going to white actors.
Actors that were seen as solid contenders included Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”), the late Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”) — but in the end, all ended up empty-handed.
Michaela Coel, nominated for four Emmys, picked up the writing limited category for “I May Destroy You,” the third time a Black creative has won the category and first for a Black woman. Past Black winners have included David Mills (“The Corner”), Anthony Hemingway (“American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson”) and Stephen Williams and Christal Henry (“Watchmen”).

The true-crime limited series “When They See Us” has received glowing reviews from critics, and because it premiered on May 31 on Netflix, the last day of Emmy eligibility, it has a chance to be honored by the television academy this summer too. But one race might be especially historic. Only five black women have ever been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for directing, but none have won. So if Ava DuVernay prevails this year for Best Movie/Mini Directing, it would be unprecedented.

Ava DuVernay — “13th”
DuVernay won two Emmys for the criminal justice documentary “13th” — Best Documentary Special and Best Nonfiction Writing — but the directing prize went instead to Ezra Edelman (“O.J.: Made in America...

For two seasons, Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans played buddy cops on the Fox Broadcasting drama series “Lethal Weapon.” But behind the scenes, the two stars were anything but friendly.
That conflict, which had begun to spill into public view on their respective social media accounts, appeared to be resolved in May, when producer Warner Bros. fired Crawford, replacing him with Seann William Scott and securing a season-three renewal from Fox.
But interviews with 31 people who worked on the series and spoke anonymously with Variety — not to mention a pair of never-before-seen on-set videos — reveal the full extent of the animosity between Crawford and Wayans. Behind the scenes, “Lethal Weapon” had descended into chaos, grinding production to a halt on multiple occasions, splitting the crew into factions, and creating an environment so toxic that by season’s end, Pinkerton security guards were present on set at all times to ensure...

In its first two seasons, Grimm fell neatly into the modern network procedural form, starting and ending a given season with heavily serialized episodes (and maybe throwing another couple in around mid-season) while keeping to standalones the rest of the time. This season, however, the show has experimented with far greater serialization, thanks to Adalind’s weekly adventures in Europe earlier in the year. For the most part, this experiment backfired, with too much time given to an underdeveloped arc.
Since “Synchronicity”, however, the series has been almost entirely serialized, with Diana’s birth and Adalind’s fleeing to Portland propelling most of the major storylines, and this...

Can a long-unsolved case still have a positive outcome?
Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) got an answer in "Open Secrets," Friday's (Feb. 28) episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods" written by executive producer Ian Biederman and directed by TV veteran Eric Laneuville.
Danny and Maria (Marisa Ramirez) were called to a school from which a youngster named Jenna had disappeared, a crossing guard telling them she'd seen the girl atypically get into a car rather than walk home. The situation brought back troubling memories for Danny, who'd failed to locate a missing girl named Allie years earlier and still was visited regularly by her father Joseph (guest star Patrick Breen), who continued to maintain hope she'd be found.
Erin (Bridget Moynahan) was handling the potential prosecution of Diana Del Rio (guest star Caroline Strong), who claimed she had a bipolar condition that caused her to fatally run over her building's superintendent. The defendant's lawyer,...

Grimm, Season 3, Episode 2, “Ptzd”
Written by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf
Directed by Eric Laneuville
Airs Fridays at 9pm Est on NBC
This week, on Grimm: Nick has one hell of a hangover, Capt. Renard makes a call, and Adalind plays with flowers
Grimm came out of the gate strong this season with its premiere and this week’s part two finishes off the Cracher-Mortel arc nicely. We open with a strong setpiece in the barn, simple, yet effective, and then quickly move on to the aftermath. “Ptzd” makes several smart decisions, and the main one is having Juliette, Monroe, and Rosalee come clean almost immediately to Nick about what’s happened. Other series seem to live for the opportunity to have looming secrets between their cast of characters, regardless of their relationships, history, or the feasibility of keeping events under wraps. Here, they trust and respect Nick enough...

For one Reagan police brother, the problem was an ex-gang mamber. For the other, it was an ex-girlfriend.
Jamie (Will Estes) and Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) each had concerns in Friday's (Nov. 1) episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods," "Growing Boys," directed by former actor Eric Laneuville ("St. Elsewhere"). Jamie's problem involved a threat to his career, while Danny's posed a mild threat to his marriage.
Shooting hoops with former gang member Tomas (Jeff Lima) in the Juvenile Robbery Intervention Program initiated by Frank (Tom Selleck), Jamie was dismayed to see the youth hassled by some of his earlier comrades. The trouble escalated when Jamie witnessed Tomas being chased by the others, prompting him to give pursuit and yell, "Police!"
The chase ended tragically when one of the potential assailants ran into the path of a car that struck him, causing injuries that left the sudden victim possibly paralyzed from the waist down.

Grimm, Season 2, Episode 8: “The Other Side”
Written by William Bigelow
Directed by Eric Laneuville
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on NBC
Nice little resonances through the Grimm storyline this week. We have a Wesen who, due to evil genetic tampering by his mother (genetics are always evil in TV shows) is torn between the personalities of two ‘breeds’ – a gentle Genio Innocuo and a Löwen. This good twin/bad twin theme is reflected (see what I did there) in the further unfolding of Renard’s backstory. Adelind Schade has ingratiated herself with Renard’s brother, Eric (James Frain slumming it between BBC costume dramas), not a difficult thing to do because Eric is Eurotrash royalty and therefore, as we all know from the antics of Prince Harry, willing to remove his bowtie and get frisky at the drop of a bottle of decent Sancerre.
Adelind manages to keep her clothes on,...

“The Other Side”
Written By: William Bigelow
Directed By: Eric Laneuville
Original Airdate: 19 October 2012
In This Episode...
Renard is given an award, and his whole crew is there to support him. Despite having the night off, Hank and Nick get called in on a case. Renard offers to give Juliette a ride home, and Nick and Hank head to the crime scene. Juliette is still wigged out by Renard, but can’t figure out why. Could be because he seems to want an invite in. Could be because he sees where Juliette gets the spare key. Once Juliette is inside, he steals the key, sneaks in, and follows the sound of the shower upstairs. He approaches, but at the last possible minute he snaps back to his senses and leaves, the only evidence of his having been there a cracked framed photo of Nick and Juliette.

There are oodles of ways to end a TV series. Marriage! Death! Birth! Flashforward! It was all a dream! Ambiguous cut to black! In 1988, though, St. Elsewhere truly shook things up and gave us one of the most talked-about series finales in history with “the snow globe.” After watching six Emmy-nominated seasons of drama — medical and emotional, dark and light, envelope-pushing and heartstring-pulling — at the run-down St. Eligius, we were led to believe in the finale’s last scene that the entire show was actually a product of the imagination of (construction worker?) Donald Westphall’s autistic son, who was...

Many actors are officially out of a job after the major series culling that most networks performed in the last few months, one that saw the cancellation of many shows across the genre spectrum. One of the more notable casualties was the popular CBS paranormal-thriller, Ghost Whisperer. You've perhaps heard about a certain cast member leaving "Grey's Anatomy" recently. There's also been a shakeup at its spinoff, "Private Practice."
Executive producers and showrunners Jon Cowan and Robert Rovner, who have been with the series for the past two seasons, are leaving, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It shouldn't affect the rest of this season much, as stories for the remaining episodes have already been broken.
Creator Shonda Rhimes is still overseeing both "Grey's" and "Private Practice," which are both strong bets to be back next season.
- CBS is jumping on the dance-show bandwagon, picking up an American version of the British series "Got to Dance."
"Got to Dance's" hook is that it's open to all comers, regardless of age, dance style or whether they're performing solo or as part of a group. After an audition round, the best dancers will perform live for judges' and viewers' votes.

ABC has put on its Christmas list a holiday movie to star the network's sitcom star George Lopez. Lisa Vidal also has been cast in the still-untitled project from Von Zerneck-Sertner Films that centers on a sports radio shock jock (Lopez) who gets a lesson on the values of life and family from his relationship with a 15-year-old fan with a life-threatening disease. Vidal will play the jock's wife, an anthropology professor. Emmy-winning director Eric Laneuville (NBC's "I'll Fly Away") is set to direct the movie from a script by Jim Burnstein ("Renaissance Man") and Garrett K. Schiff (ABC's "Angels in the Infield"). Robert Sertner and Frank von Zerneck, who most recently executive produced the CBS miniseries "Reversible Errors", are executive producing the project with Lopez's wife, Ann Lopez, and Jerry Vukas. Filming is slated to begin at the end of June in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Lopez -- co-creator, writer, star and producer his eponymous ABC/Warner Bros. TV comedy series -- toplines his own comedy special for Showtime, "George Lopez: Why You Crying?" He is repped by UTA and manager Ron De Blasio. Vidal, whose credits include recurring roles on Lifetime's "The Division" and NBC's "ER," is repped by WMA and manager Bob McGowan.
