As Sanctuary, Zachary Wigon’s twisted tale of a dominatrix and her wealthy client, opens in NY and LA, David Lancaster of producer Rumble Films recalls a speedy 18-day shoot on a custom-made set in Brownsville, Brooklyn in late summer of 2021. It was Covid, so not the easiest time for indie financing.
It world premiered in Toronto, Neon picked it up. Rumble is pretty prolific with projects including Whiplash, Night Crawler, Eye In The Sky, Drive and Donnybrook. It lost one project to a lack of pandemic insurance and more recently saw another fall away since it wouldn’t have been finished shooting by the end of June – when actor and director contracts expires and they could potentially be on strike alongside writers. “It’s a tricky world,” he said.

‘Sanctuary’ Trailer: Margaret Qualley Holds Christopher Abbott Hostage in Neon’s Dominatrix Thriller
Margaret Qualley sets out to spank, seduce, and scourge Christopher Abbott in the sexy blackmail drama “Sanctuary.”

IndieWire critic David Ehrlich praised the film for being “such a salaciously enjoyable slice of snack-sized fun” with an unpredictable plot that toys with what it really means to roleplay.
“‘Sanctuary’ unfolds like a kinky cross between ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ and an off-Broadway play,” Ehrlich wrote. “[It’s] a story about identity and control, but it’s also a movie about the...

Małgorzata Szumowska's The Other Lamb is exclusively showing October 16, 2020 - November 14, 2020 on Mubi in the United Kingdom.“Would anyone like more lamb?,” a jolly voice proclaims, as pairs of arms pass around the dish in question. Arranged in an orderly fashion, the seats around this scant dining table are gendered and color-coded—a single male figure in the center separates girls in blue from women in red. This strict hierarchy makes up the world of The Other Lamb, a male-dominated religious cult led by a charismatic leader. The less the Shepherd (Michiel Huisman) speaks, the more suffocating this social circle seems, and his power, as is made evident early on, is bestowed via gestures of violent touch, gazes, or merely his presence. The women appear complacent, like lambs headed to the slaughter, all except Selah (Raffey Cassidy), whose tremendous (but blind) devotion proves most prone to disillusionment. Polish filmmaker Małgorzata...

Sony Pictures Classics has re-scheduled Guiseppe Capotondi’s The Burnt Orange Heresy for Aug. 7.
The label bought the thriller, which closed Venice last year. It was there that Capotondi and the pic’s stars Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland won the Fondazione Mimmo Rotella Award.
Pic, based on the novel by Charles Willeford with a screenplay by Scott B. Smith follows a charming and ambitious art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang), who has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Sutherland). Arriving on VOD and various digital platforms today is Małgorzata Szumowska’s coming-of-age cult thriller, The Other Lamb, which follows a teenage woman named Selah (Raffey Cassidy), who comes to terms with her burgeoning womanhood and her devotion to a man she only knows as “Shepherd” (Michiel Huisman), the enigmatic and dangerous messianic leader who presides over a group of women who blindly follow him and his teachings.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Szumowska about what initially drew her to the script for The Other Lamb, as well as her approach to this story and how she wasn’t looking to vilify the decisions of the female characters in the film as well. Szumowska also discussed her organic casting process for The Other Lamb and the deep unspoken bond she shared with the film’s star, Raffey Cassidy.
I'd love to start off by talking a little bit about the story of The Other Lamb.

Mick Jagger was a good get for “Burnt Orange Heresy” producers in more ways than one. They knew the Rolling Stones frontman would raise awareness of the indie project — at the very least, there was sure to be curiosity about his first credited movie role since 2002’s “The Man From Elysian Fields” – but he also helped backers qualify for European subsidies.
And they were definitely trying to do that.
Producers had already changed the original Florida setting in Charles Willeford’s pulpy 1971 novel to Lake Como, Italy, lined up Giuseppe Capotondi to direct, and “The Square” star Claes Bang and European-Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki for key roles. Casting the British musician as a wealthy art collector of dubious morality further helped the production meet European quotas on top of Italian subsidies.

It’s a pretty safe bet that the Italian entries at Venice that will make the biggest splashes this year are both TV series premiering in the official selection: Paolo Sorrentino’s limited series “The New Pope” and Stefano Sollima’s cocaine-trafficking drama “ZeroZeroZero.”
While these are both shows by directors who also work in film, Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera has no qualms in pointing out that in the film sphere the domestic pickings were slim this year.
Venice selectors received 186 Italian films, which amounts to roughly 10% of the total submissions. “And more than half were unwatchable microbudget first works,” Barbera says. “You wonder: why produce this stuff?”
However, the TV series, both commissioned by Sky Italia and screening out of competition, are on a different level. “They were both a big gamble,” Barbera says. And they cost a lot, “but you really see the results.”

“The Burnt Orange Heresy,” starring Mick Jagger as a reclusive art dealer alongside Elizabeth Debicki (“Widows”), Claes Bang (“The Square”) and Donald Sutherland, has been selected as the Venice Film Festival closer.
The English-language art heist movie marks Italian director Giuseppe Capotondi’s first time back at Venice since 2009, when his debut feature film, the taut thriller “The Double Hour,” made a splash on the Lido. That film won its star, Kseniya Rappoport, the best actress prize.
Described as a contemporary “erotic neo-noir thriller” in the festival’s synopsis, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” sees charismatic art critic James Figueras (Bang) hook up with provocative and alluring fellow American Berenice Hollis (Debicki). “He’s a classic anti-hero in the making with a charm that masks his ambition, whilst she’s an innocent touring Europe, enjoying the freedom of being whoever she wishes,” the festival said.

Brad Pitt space odyssey “Ad Astra,” Noah Baumbach’s untitled new project, “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix, Tom Harper’s “The Aeronauts,” Fernando Meirelles’ “The Pope,” the new “Rambo” installment, and heist thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” starring Mick Jagger as a reclusive art dealer, all look bound for the Venice Film Festival, sources tell Variety.
The fest is scheduled to unveil its initial lineup July 25. With just six weeks before the festival kicks off, director Alberto Barbera is scrambling to firm up his official selection, a process more down to the wire than usual.
At the moment, this year’s U.S. studio presence on the Lido does not look as if it will be as dominant as in recent editions, possibly because the Disney-Fox merger has slowed down the Hollywood pipeline a bit. But where the majors might be pulling back, the streamers are stepping in.
