Disney+ has ordered a new short-form Muppets series titled “Muppets Now,” the streamer announced at the D23 expo on Friday.
The “unscripted” series is set to premiere on the service in 2020 and will feature celebrity guests. No other details were shared.
The project is just the latest entry in the “Muppets” franchise, which most recently included the 2012 film “The Muppets” and its sequel “Muppets Most Wanted,” as well as a short-lived ABC series also titled “The Muppets.”

CBS is using a different approach to unveiling its winter scheduling plans this year — by genre. After announcing its midseason unscripted slate yesterday, the network today is focusing on comedy.
Coming off the schedule in January/February are freshmen Murphy Brown and Happy Together; coming on are new comedy Fam and returning Man With a Plan.
CBS so far has given a Back 9 pickup for a full-season order to one new fall comedy, The Neighborhood. Like all current broadcast sitcom reboots, Murphy Brown was designed for a limited run and will wrap its freshman run with 13 episodes though its ratings delivery has been somewhat disappointing.
For Happy Together, starring Damon Wayans Jr., CBS has opted not to order additional episodes beyond the original 13. Per CBS’ standard Mo the past few years, the comedy is not canceled and will remain in contention for next season.

There are changes at the wheel for CBS midseason comedy Fam, which is slated to debut at midseason.
According to TV Line, executive producer and showrunner Bob Kushell has been let go from the series ahead of its premiere.
The report states that the reason for his firing has using insensitive language inside the writers room, and it was deemed inappropriate by network execs who opted to dismiss him.
Fam has been in production for several weeks, with ten of the show's 13 episodes completed.
Series creator and co-showrunner, Corrinne Kingsbury has been elevated to co-showrunner, while Joe Port and Joe Wiseman have been upped to executive producers.

Bob Kushell is out as co-showrunner for CBS’ midseason sitcom “Fam,” ahead of its debut, for “inappropriate language in the workplace.”
CBS declined to comment, but an insider with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that Kushell is no longer with the show. TV Line was first to report the news of Kushell’s departure for workplace misconduct. Representatives for Kushell did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
The comedy starring Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell is set to premiere at midseason. Corinne Kingsbury, who created the show, will now be the sole showrunner on the series.

Bob Kushell, executive producer/showrunner of CBS’ upcoming midseason comedy Fam starring Nina Dobrev, has exited the series. I hear he was dismissed following a complaint that he had used insensitive language in the writers room. Word is that the comment in question was not of a sexual harassment nature, but it was deemed inappropriate.
With CBS under scrutiny in the past few months with a number of high-profile exits over misconduct allegations, from CEO Les Moonves to former NCIS: New Orleans showrunner Brad Kern, the network acted decisively, removing Kushell. CBS declined comment.
The move comes with three episodes left to film in Fam‘s 13-episode order. Creator/executive producer Corinne Kingsbury is taking lead, with comedy veterans Joe Port and Joe Wiseman getting elevated to executive producers.

Bob Kushell, the co-showrunner of CBS’ upcoming midseason comedy “Fam,” has been fired for reportedly using inappropriate language in the workplace, Variety has learned.
The show’s creator, Corinne Kingsbury, will now serve as the sitcom’s sole showrunner.
Representatives for CBS declined to comment.
“Fam” stars Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell and Odessa Adlon in a blended-family comedy about a woman who seeks a perfect life with her fiance’s family only to have her plans up-ended when her wild 16-year-old sister moves in.
Kushell’s quick dismissal reflects the heightened sensitivity throughout the entertainment industry to allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct in workplace settings. The specifics around Kushell’s firing are still unclear. CBS has yet to set a premiere date for the multicamera comedy.

The Honeymooners, the famous 1950s sitcom starring Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows, is getting a modern reboot on CBS, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original series focused on the home life of Ralph Kramden (Gleason) a New York City bus driver and his wife Alice (Meadows) along with their amusing neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton (Art Carney and Joyce Randolph). The new version of The Honeymooners will revolve around two couples, but with a twist: one of the pairs will have just remarried after getting a divorce four years earlier.

ABC has pulled the plug on The Muppets TV show, choosing to cancel it rather than order a second season...
The Muppets TV show has been cancelled by ABC. The network has opted not to order a second season of the show, which perhaps doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the turmoil that the series has faced.
Halfway through the first (and now only) season of The Muppets, Galavant’s Kristen Newman was brought in as a new co-showrunner and the series’ co-creator Bob Kushell was shuffled out. Newman spoke publicly about her plans to refocus the show on “joy and zaniness and heart”, but it seems that ABC still weren’t pleased at the end of the season.
The ratings are arguably the biggest contributor to this decision to cancel The Muppets. Variety reports that The Muppets ended with around 5 million viewers in the Nielsen “live plus-7” estimates,...

Tonight marks the season finale of The Muppets on ABC. The network wasn't happy with the new Tuesday night series' ratings in the fall so they replaced series showrunner Bob Kushell with Galavant's showrunner, Kristin Newman. Newman made some changes to the series but they don't seem to have made a difference. The ratings hit new lows when the show returned from its winter hiatus.

“The Muppets are all about joy and zaniness” stresses Kristen Newman, the new showrunner of their ABC series…
Now that Kristen Newman (who jumped ships from ABC's Galavant) has taken over from Bob Kushell as the co-showrunner to Bill Prady on ABC’s The Muppets series, she’s quickly made some changes to the show.
“I came in for episode 10, which was the Christmas episode that aired before the break,” she told The Hollywood Reporter, “and Day 1 of work was rewriting Piggy-Kermit scenes to really bring that connection back.”
“The heart of the whole franchise has always been Piggy and Kermit, and I think breaking them up was really smart,” she continued. “There’s always more story to be told and more tension when two people who love each other are apart instead of together. But what’s important to remember is that they do love each other,...

CAA has signed veteran comedy writer-producer Bob Kushell. He most recently co-created ABC’s freshman comedy series The Muppets and served as an executive producer and showrunner until his exit in November. Kushell started his primetime writing career on HBO’s Dream On and went on to work on The Simpsons, 3rd Rock From The Sun, American Dad, Grounded For Life, Samantha Who?, and Malcolm In The Middle. He created the BBC comedy Way To Go among other series. Kushell was…...

The curious case of The Muppets has been puzzling critics and viewers alike — who the hell is Denise, and where the hell is Camilla? — since the mockumentary-style comedy premiered on ABC in the fall to a lukewarm response. The show, which chronicles the adorable anthropomorphic characters in Los Angeles as they work on the late-night talk show Up Late With Miss Piggy, was noticeably more adult in narrative and oddly morose in its overall tone. But instead of muttering a signature Beaker meep meep and continuing on with production, showrunner Bob Kushell was let go, soon replaced by Galavant showrunner Kristin Newman to give it a Dr. Bunsen Honeydew-calculated change. And what are those changes, you may ask? In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Newman discussed at length about how her main goal will be to make the show less mean-spirited and instead fill it with...

Last spring, ABC boss Paul Lee boasted of one of his new comedies, "This is not your grandmother's 'Muppets.'" At press tour this weekend, Lee admitted "The Muppets" needed some creative tweaking, because, "We didn’t quite feel it had the joy, the laughter, and the heart we were looking for." In other words, they now want something very much like your grandmother's "Muppets," which is as it should be. The version of "The Muppets" that debuted in the fall had funny moments, but for the most part the characters seemed cynical and bitter and occasionally mean in a way that doesn't at all fit what Jim Henson's creations should be doing. The last couple of episodes that aired seemed to finally be bringing the sweetness back to the Muppets, and it sounds like new showrunner Kristin Newman (who arrived in time to do some rewriting of the...

ABC's freshman comedy series "The Muppets" has undergone a major shake-up as co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Bob Kushell has left the project with Kristin Newman ("Galavant") in negotiations to succeed him as new showrunner.
The show is undergoing a creative overhaul which will be seen on screens after the series takes a hiatus following its tenth episode. The remaining six episodes will air in the Spring and are said to be treated as a relaunch.
Kushell co-wrote the original Muppets presentation with "The Big Bang Theory" co-creator/executive producer Bill Prady. Here’s an unexpected one. Bob Kushell – one of the executive producers and co-showrunners of ABC’s The Muppets TV show – has departed the series after only six episodes have been aired.
Kushell is well versed in working behind the scenes on successful comedy series, having previously held roles on The Simpsons, 3rd Rock From The Sun, Malcolm In The Middle and Anger Management.
From our perspective, things seemed to be going well for The Muppets. ABC ordered a few more episodes of the adult-skewed series only last week. It remains a mystery, then, exactly why Mr Kushell has walked away.

One of the most anticipated new TV shows of the 2015-16 season, The Muppets premiered with great ratings. Unfortunately, the new adult take on the classic characters isn't everyone's cup of tea and the numbers have dropped more than 50%. "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights" -- or as ABC said in an announcement earlier today, "It's time to change the music, it's time to change the lights." Deadline and Spinoff Online are reporting that "The Muppets" show will get a soft reboot when it returns from hiatus in the spring. Deadline is also reporting that showrunner Bob Kushell has stepped down as executive producer of the series, leaving room for "Galavant" producer Kristin Newman to possibly replace him. "The Big Bang Theory" producer Bill Prady is still set to stay on board as co-executive producer. This news comes as a surprise, considering the show was just picked up for a full season a few days ago. As of right now, "The Muppets" will air 10 episodes this fall, then will finish its first season with six more episodes in the spring. The big question about the soft reboot is,...

You have the Parents Television Council to thank for Bob Kushell’s exit as showrunner of ABC’s “The Muppets,” at least according to the Parents Television Council. Despite reports attributing Kushell’s exit to creative differences with executive producer Bill Prady, the watchdog group claims that its research revealing the amount of “adult-themed content” on the show is responsible for its relaunch. “I believe our research on ‘The Muppets’ exposed a hard truth: When you have a show that inherently attracts kids, but frequently exposes them to adult content — sexual innuendoes, sexual references, drugs and alcohol — it’s bound to fail,...

For The Muppets, it’s time to get things started — all over again. According to Deadline, the ABC sitcom is dropping showrunner Bob Kushell and replacing him with Galavant co–executive producer Kristin Newman. While the move is apparently motivated in part by tensions between Kushell and Muppets executive producer Bill Prady, ABC is also hoping the showrunner shake-up will be a way to revive the sitcom, which looked like a surefire hit but has struggled amid tepid reviews and precipitously sliding ratings. The plan now, it seems, is to run out the show’s first ten episodes this fall, and then bring it back in the spring for a six-episode mid-season run, which will serve as an unofficial reboot.Off a new start wafts a sort of promise: the Muppets sitcom fans deserve. Per Deadline, the series was rushed to air, leading to a “clash in styles and vision” between Kushell and co-creator/executive producer Bill Prady. I published my review of ABC's "The Muppets" last week. Now it's your turn. For those of you who watched it tonight, what did you think? Did the mocukmentary format feel like a good way to use Kermit and friends? Did you feel what Bill Prady has described as the "real" versions of these characters were appreciably different from (and/or true to) what we know from the previous movies and shows? Are you pro or anti the Kermit/Piggy break-up? Were the human guest stars well-used? Did it feel too raunchy, or were those jokes properly concealed from younger viewers? And will you watch again? Have at it. I'm going to watch for a while in hopes that Prady and Bob Kushell figure out the right balance (particularly with Kermit and Piggy).

The Muppets, Season 1
Created by Bill Prady & Bob Kushell
Premieres Tuesday, September 22nd at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Two episodes watched for review
There’s a scene in “Hostile Makeover,” the second episode of The Muppets, which exemplifies the fundamentally misguided nature of the show’s approach. Waldorf and Statler, the perennial curmudgeons of the Muppets universe, watch Josh Groban perform. Contrary to their usual hatred of everything, they’re impressed by the singer’s talent, and they appear to genuinely enjoy his song. The joke, or what’s intended to function as such, lies in the subversion of the viewer’s expectations of the characters.
But while creators Bill Prady and Bob Kushell know Waldorf and Statler well enough to riff on their personas, Prady and Kushell don’t seem to understand that it’s the consistency of these personas which makes the characters work as well as they do.

The critics and journalists who attend the TCA Press Tour every year always represent a diverse range of opinions, but the biggest split that occurred this summer, to the best of my knowledge, came when we were given the opportunity to ask Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy some questions. Long before he co-created "Big Bang Theory," Bill Prady broke into show business as a low-level Jim Henson Co. staffer, working in licensing and other tangential Muppet-related departments before eventually getting to write for Gonzo and company himself. Most prospective TV shows need a full-length pilot episode to be considered for air. With Bill Prady and Bob Kushell's new take on "The Muppets," all ABC needed to see was this 10-minute proof-of-concept video, directed by Randall Einhorn, that takes Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy and friends out of their usual variety show format (though they still work out of the Muppet Theater) and instead puts them in the context of the faux documentary format popularized by "The Office," "Modern Family," "Parks and Rec," et al.
