A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie that was supposed to be a happy reunion for Scream director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson… but it turned into a total mess. It’s the 2005 werewolf movie Cursed (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Craven and Williamson told the following story with this one: In Los Angeles, siblings Ellie and Jimmy come across an accident on Mulholland Drive. As they try to help the woman caught in the wreckage, a ferocious creature attacks them, devouring the woman and scratching the terrified siblings. They slowly discover that the creature was a werewolf and that they have fallen victim to a deadly curse. Now that they have been sliced by the werewolf’s claws,...

"Can we just stay in the moment?" Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for a romantic drama titled Float, made in Canada by filmmaker Sherren Lee. This cheesy love story is based on the book of the same name written by Kate Marchant. It's one of these "everything changed when I met this one guy" stories we've seen so many times over and over. A city girl with a life in Toronto, originally from Taiwan, rejected by her parents, makes an impulsive decision to spend the summer at a small town with her estranged aunt. She nearly drowns and is rescued by the lifeguard next door, who offers to teach her how to swim. Of course they fall in love, but will things work out? Float stars Andrea Bang as Waverly, Robbie Amell as lifeguard Blake, Michelle Krusiec, Andrew Bachelor, Rukiya Bernard, and Sarah Desjardins. This looks sweet and sappy and...

This LGBTQ+ History Month, we're asking writers to reflect on a moment in queer pop culture history that has allowed them to experience queer liberation in their own lives. Check out our coverage here.
Long before the commercial success of "Crazy Rich Asians," "Shang-Chi," "Fire Island," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" heralded a new age of Asian representation in Hollywood, Alice Wu's "Saving Face" paved the way for queer Asian visibility in 2004.
Last year, when I watched the film for the first time, I had a vague inkling that I aspired to become a screenwriter and filmmaker. I had taken a few screenwriting classes through a nonprofit arts organization, but I felt deep insecurity that the subjects I was writing about - my American-born Chinese experience of being queer in an ethno-burb in Los Angeles - were too specific and too esoteric to be relevant to any audience.

Now that most schools are back in session, who’s up for a history lesson? Okay, we had one a few weeks ago with the, still in theatres, Oppenheimer. And though it’s really well done, to be honest, it’s kind of a “downer” what with all the “atomic bomb stuff”. This new flick also deals with science, but it concerns the exploration of space, much like the surprise “crowd-pleaser” of 2016, Hidden Figures. Like that film, it concerns one member, rather than the mathematics trio, of a minority that is usually not the focus of these docudramas. Oh, and rather than the swinging sixties this story is much more recent, capping off in 2009. It’s really the story of a dreamer, a man who dares to imagine leaving Earth to travel A Million Miles Away.
It is the late 1960s when we meet the Hernandez family, who are leaving lots of friends,...

The Old Young Crow took home the top prize at the 2023 Palm Springs International Shortfest on Sunday. The Japanese-United States short film follows an elderly Persian man recalling the lessons he learned from an elderly Japanese woman.
The best animated short award went to Lithuania’s Way Better, which centers on a man who’s expecting the worst but hoping for the best from his upcoming medical test results. He spends his time over the course of a week waiting in a limbo of his own creation, dreading things that haven’t happened yet.
Other top awards of the festival went to China’s Will You Look At Me for documentary short, France’s Sét Lam for live-action short over 15 minutes and Spain’s Mystic Tiger for live-action short 15 minutes and under. The top five films are now eligible to submit their shorts to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Oscar consideration.

The coming-of-age story will then have a one-week theatrical run.
Reflective of the feature’s expansive crew of female filmmakers, “The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu” is centered around the challenges of mother-daughter relationships. Along the way, Emma begins to obtain a better understanding of her immigrant mother and their complicated relationship.

Today’s Free Movie of the Day is the horror movie The Bone Box, which marked the feature debut of writer/director Luke Genton – and this really is a textbook first feature.
First-time filmmakers are often advised to make something that takes place in as few locations as possible, ideally just one for most of the running time, and with few characters. There’s no shame in it. A lot of notable directors have gotten their start with movies that follow this advice. Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead takes place in one location and has very few characters. George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead also does, for the most part (he did need a lot of zombie...

This one is formerly known as The Uncanny. Rlje Films has posted this trailer for an indie horror thriller titled They Live in the Grey, which already premiered on Shudder earlier this year. We're just catching up with this one now as they prepare for a VOD / DVD release this summer. The story follows Claire who, while investigating a child abuse case, discovers that the family is being tormented by a supernatural entity. In order to save the family, she must confront her own fears and use her emerging clairvoyance to stop the malevolent force. The film stars Michelle Krusiec, Ken Kirby, and Madelyn Grace. It didn't get great reviews, but it still looks chilling. "The film's title is a brilliant play on the turmoil both the living and dead undergo during the two-hour runtime." This trailer doesn't show much, but better than showing too much. Here's the official trailer...

First up, the 60-minute special “American Girl: Corrine Tan” (working title) “follows 13-year-old ski enthusiast Corinne Tan as she navigates her parents’ recent divorce while her 10-year-old sister, Gwynn, dad, mom, and stepdad Arne have adjusted to their new roles in this blended family. They Live in the Grey opens on an ominous note as Claire, depressed by the death of her young son and the subsequent death of her marriage, attempts to hang herself. She’s also begun seeing ghosts, frequently violent and angry ones which results in her sleeping in a closet for safety.
As if this isn’t troubling enough she works for Child Protective Services dealing with cases of abuse. She’s been assigned to the case of Sophie whose parents are suspected of beating her. On her first meeting with the family she sees signs of a supernatural presence in the house. Abel and Burlee Vang offer a satisfying, troubling portrait of motherhood gone wrong to go with the lashings of gore
They Live in the Grey is another classy effort on the Shudder streaming platform, properly scary and thoughtfully constructed, with unusual editing and framing sleights of hand, co-directed by Hmong-American brothers Abel and Burlee Vang. Claire is assigned to investigate a case of possible domestic abuse involving a pre-adolescent girl named Sophie (Madelyn Grace) living in a tense home with parents Audrey and Arthur (Bernard Bullen); Claire starts to see the ghost (Mercedes Manning) of a woman whose poltergeisting may be the cause of Sophie’s bruises. With the third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” airing its finale on Thursday, Jan. 7, it is difficult to overstate what a significant milestone this season marked for representation across the franchise.
Case in point, the series introduced a romantic relationship between the first non-binary and transgender characters in the “Star Trek” universe, played respectively by a non-binary and a trans actor.
This recent spotlight on inclusive casting is part of an extended conversation that longtime fans like Phil Yu have been following over the years. To celebrate the steppingstones, Yu, who founded the “Angry Asian Man” blog centering on Asian American representation in Hollywood, launched a podcast in August, on which he hosts hour-long conversations with “All the Asians on ‘Star Trek.'”
While Yu half-jokingly titled his podcast, he tells Variety now that “the name points out that there are just enough [Asians] involved to make a podcast out of...

For Emmy-nominated production designer Matthew Flood Ferguson, working on Ryan Murphy’s “Hollywood” limited series was a labor of love. It’s a post-World War II ode to Tinseltown about aspiring actors and filmmakers with more at stake culturally than artistic success, which required authentic depictions of iconic locations along with fictional composites.
“For me it was a dream job because I had grown up loving the film industry and had been fascinated by it,” Ferguson said, who collaborated with art director Mark Robert Taylor and set decorator Melissa Licht. “So, with some of these locations, like the El Cabrillo [apartment complex], built by Cecil B. The Netflix limited series “Hollywood” premiered on May 1. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the seven-episode drama imagines the golden age of show business if the era really had been golden for the marginalized groups who were ignored or oppressed by society at large. Now the silver screen fable could have a happy ending at the Emmys. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.

“Hollywood” made sure to put the “golden” in Golden Age of Hollywood. Ryan Murphy’s reimagining of an idyllic, progressive 1940s Tinseltown is an aspirational ideal and it needed the resplendent costumes to match.
“It all started with this idea of the Golden Age of Hollywood, which informed the color palette. It was Hollywood glamour, Golden Age of Hollywood, aspirational. It started with everything being [George] Hurrell-inspired, super glamorous and everything having a golden sheen. So that was the jumping off point for our color palette,” Sarah Evelyn told Gold Derby during our Meet the Btl Experts: Costume Design panel (watch above). “It was like gold, butterscotch, caramel and sort of worked itself into the rest of the rainbow.”
Evelyn, who worked with longtime Murphy costume designer Lou Eyrich on the limited series, turned to some ‘40s classics for inspiration to capture the era’s glamorous vibe, including “Now, Voyager” (1942), “Casablanca...

Every year since 2010, Ryan Murphy has had at least one of his productions competing in the Emmy race. He’s looking to continue that trend this year with his latest miniseries, “Hollywood.” While the show does feature a large ensemble of well-established actors such as Darren Criss, Patti LuPone, Dylan McDermott, Jim Parsons and Holland Taylor, there’s one performance in particular that deserves Emmy attention, and that would be newcomer Jeremy Pope.

Matthew Ferguson had the enviable task of handling the production design on Netflix’s splashy limited series “Hollywood,” a reimagining of Tinseltown in the 1940s. Having previously done set decoration for previous Ryan Murphy projects, this was his first-ever job as a production designer on a TV series. “I was thrilled and honored that he trusted me to do the job so I took it and ran with it,” Ferguson says in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby. “It was just a big collaboration.” Watch the new video interview above.

Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong gets a new life on Netflix’s “Hollywood.” The series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan takes a revisionist look at the film industry in the 1940s and gives several of the era’s real life stars the happy endings they never had. One such star was Wong, portrayed in the series by Michelle Krusiec. In our exclusive video interview (watch above), she explains the actress’ complicated life and career. “She really became a global star and a global sensation,” she explains, “but her relationship with Hollywood was quite torrid. She was constantly stereotyped.”

Watching Netflix's Hollywood, I felt surprised to see Michelle Krusiec pop up on screen in episode two. Who was this glamorous, angsty woman in gorgeous cat-eye sunglasses and a flouncy purple dress? Her presence caught me off guard - I wasn't used to seeing an Asian woman on modern American TV, let alone an Asian woman on a show about the 1940s. On top of that, it was rare to witness an Asian woman speak candidly, almost bitterly, about her frustrations, as Krusiec does with Darren Criss, who plays Raymond Ainsley. I soon pieced together that Krusiec was portraying Anna May Wong, one of the most underappreciated actresses in American history.
Culturally, the Asian American woman has always felt like a modern concept to me, even though I know this isn't true.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of Wong has been sparse, supplemented with a few lines in history books. Pop...

Movies have always blended fact with fiction. To watch a Hollywood biopic from the 1940s is to realize you’re getting a real-life figure mixed with a heavy dose of romanticism and erasure. It’s the route taken with Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix limited series “Hollywood,” and as actor Darren Criss says, it’s appropriate. “[Hollywood] is the godfather of revision…we’re literally giving Hollywood the Hollywood treatment.”
To Criss’ point, the Hollywood treatment has always been a double-edged sword, one filled with as many fairy tales and happy endings as there are outright omissions and fabrications. But when it comes to the real-life figures Murphy portrays in the series there’s an interesting dichotomy presented, one that’s at times painfully bittersweet as it is completely invented.

The Hollywood fairy tale has changed over the decades. There’s a scene early on in Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix period drama “Hollywood,” in which an aspiring director, played by Darren Criss, meets with Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong, played by Michelle Krusiec, to try to convince her to be in his movie. Midway through their conversation he casually mentions that he’s half-Filipino, which seems to catch her off guard. She stops, takes off her glasses to see him better, and then says, “You’re Asian?”
What follows is a conversation not only about what it means to be an Asian-American person in Hollywood, but the further consequences that come with looking like one.

When Ryan Murphy announces a series, there is an immediate intrigue that is often associated with it. Take a look at his track record: Popular, Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, 9-1-1 and Pose. With each series, he delivered relatable stories with outsized characters through a hyper-stylized lens. He pushed the envelope and slowly doled out stories about misfits, characters we haven’t seen on TV before and allowed those in the margins to shine. His series Feud put the spotlight on a very specific era in Hollywood — an era he loves. This would essentially be a beta version of his and Ian Brennan’s Netflix series Hollywood, which gives a look at the inclusive film and TV industry that could have been during the glitz and glamour of post-World War II Hollywood.

As you might expect, Netflix’s new “Hollywood,” which debuts on the streamer May 1, didn’t have to travel far for production. However, the eight-episode series, from Ryan Murphy and his “Glee” collaborator Ian Brennan, doesn’t take place in contemporary Hollywood but rather in Los Angeles, just after World War II.
Production designer Matthew Flood Ferguson captures the 1940s beautifully. Not only did filming take place at many Los Angeles landmarks, but Ferguson also re-created long-gone institutions like Schwab’s Pharmacy.

When Alice Wu’s first film, the instant queer classic “Saving Face,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004, no one was more surprised than her. The product of five years’ work, Wu loosely based the film on her own experiences coming out as a lesbian to her traditional Chinese family. Fourteen years before Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Wu’s film was also populated almost exclusively by Chinese actors (many of whom spoke Mandarin in the film) and was deeply rooted in the immigrant experience.
“Who the hell thought that movie would get made?,” Wu said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I thought, ‘I’ll just have to go back and get a job doing something else.'”

Ryan Murphy's latest project is the Netflix limited series Hollywood, and after seeing the first trailer, it's easy to wonder if it's based on a true story. The answer to that question is actually a little bit complicated. We're breaking down what's pure fiction and what's based on reality - or, at the very least, real gossip.
What Is Hollywood on Netflix About?
At first glance, it looks like Hollywood is just your typical showbiz drama, set in the glamorous and dangerous world of post-World War II Hollywood. But there's a twist: it's set in a "what if?" sort of alternate timeline where many of the prejudices of the real world don't exist, exploring instead all the creativity that could have come from the kinds of people that the real Hollywood of the 1940s overlooked.

Netflix has shared the first trailer for Hollywood, the streaming platform’s latest limited series, from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The seven-episode series launches May 1st.
As glimpsed in the teaser, Hollywood envisions what the post-World War II movie-studio system would be like if actors, screenwriters, and directors from marginalized communities infiltrated its ranks. The show will explore the unfair and sadly very true biases that existed for people of color, women, and members of the Lgbtq community during Hollywood’s Golden Age, while also imagining what a fairer system would have been like.

In “Saving Face” filmmaker Alice Wu’s capable hands, it is entirely transformed for contemporary audiences.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Bookish introvert Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) is perfectly content with her life: watching old movies with her widowed father and ghostwriting papers for her high school classmates to help pay the bills. But her side gig turns personal when...
