Back in the fall of 2009, we told you about the emergence of a live-action Voltron movie by Atlas Entertainmentbased on the 1980’s cartoon series . The project has been floundering in Hollywood’s “development-hell” for years with various wishful producers seeking to revive the robot defender of the universe.
After a tussle over the rights over the television property and a bidding war between Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment, the dust has finally settled to land the project to be developed by both Relativity and Atlas. Atlas’ Charles Roven (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International) and Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Voltron Force, Wanted) will produce the project. Ted Koplar (Voltron Force) of World Event Productions, who sold the feature film rights, will executive produce. Conan: The Barbarian scribes Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer will work on the script.

Not even a bidding war can take down the ‘Defender of the Universe’ as the live-action version of Voltron gets back on track with Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment.
It looked like Voltron would finally be making it to the big screen way back when the concept art first appeared, but dollars and cents stalled the big screen adaptation of the 1984 animated series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, until Atlas and Relativity stepped in and optioned the film rights. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been tapped to provide the script.
Just in case you’re a Voltron noob, the film is being based on Lion Force Voltron, the elite battle team that operates high-tech robotic lions that are capable of forming the giant mega-weapon know as Voltron, and not on the Vehicle Voltron team, which was never my favorite anyway.

I know we've been hearing about a big screen adaptation of Voltron for years, but now it looks like there is going to be actual movement on the film production. Relativity Media recently made the announcement that they have optioned the feature film rights for Voltron from World Event Productions, and will officially adapt the live-action big screen version from the 1984 cult-classic animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckl will be producing the film.
I grew up watching Voltron, and I've been waiting for this film to finally get off the freakin' ground! I couldn't be more excited to hear that this is officially happening! I can't wait to see who they end up bringing on board to direct it. This could be a epic film. What do you all think?

This past summer teased “Voltron” fans by offering as much evidence as anyone had ever seen that there would soon be a live-action adaptation of the beloved 1980s cartoon about a giant robot composed of smaller lion robots operated by people.
As producer Ted Koplar of World Events (the production company behind the original cartoon) told MTV News, “Voltron” “outperformed the Transformers” in its heyday, so naturally the thought of reprising the franchise has generated no small amount of interest from Hollywood. We even saw some leaked concept art of the titular robot amongst a decimated NYC. But if one sign of a movie being on its way proves it is—even more so than full color concept art—it’s a bidding war.
And according to Vulture, that's exactly what broke out recently over the rights to make a "Voltron" movie.

Although the proposed adaptation for the 80s animated series “The Thundercats” never got of the ground, Voltron is still in the works, and after the completion of the Transformers trilogy, Hollywood is looking for its next big robot film. We have already seen some amazing concept art for the potential film, but nothing as come of it until now. Vulture has word of studios currently in a bidding war over “The Defender of the Universe.”
Relativity Media is just one of the studios interested in purchasing the movie rights for Voltron, the other one being Atlas Entertainment producers Charles Roven (The Dark Knight Rises) and Richard Suckle, who have been developing a script with screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.
Now, one of the reasons why the process of turning this into a potential hit film is taking so long has to do with the show’s creator, Peter Keefe.

We told you last year that Atlas Entertainment picked up the rights for a Voltron live-action movie. There were many rumors of the project’s demise, which producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar quickly dismissed, and promised that they were on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter for the film, and since then they have reportedly hired the screenwriting team of Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan, Doctor Strange).
Additionally, Atlas is developing a new Voltron animated series called Voltron Force that will air on Nicktoons in 2011.
Now, JoBlo has gotten their hands on some concept art from the movie Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which is currently in development. Check them out below!

Back in June, producer Ted Koplar seemed a bit confused. On the first day, reports came out that plans for a Voltron movie were scrapped in favor of a television show and a new toy line. Then, just two days later, Koplar made a full reversal and said that not only was a film planned, but that they were about to hire a screenwriter. News on the front has been dead since, but now there's something to report. JoBlo is not only reporting that Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been hired to write the script (scribes of the upcoming Dr. Strange and Drake's Fortune films), but have also received two pieces of concept art from the film. Fair warning, the art does look incredibly cool, but that's kind of the nature of concept art - it's a true vision before it gets compromised and destroyed by the studio. That...

Earlier this summer, producers Ted Koplar and Richard Suckle spoke with MTV News to dispel the rumors that the developing "Voltron" feature film adaptation was dead in the water. But if you didn't believe their comments, perhaps you'll believe some visual evidence.
Two alleged pieces of concept art from the live-action "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" adaptation have premiered online at JoBlo. If official, the two images showcase the size, scale, scope and setting from the forthcoming "Voltron" film, depicting a practically apocalyptic New York City torn to shreds at the hands of some truly menacing creatures.
We've posted the images after the jump, but head over to JoBlo.com for high-res versions of each shot.

Despite reports to the contrary this week, producers of the live-action Voltron movie insist the feature film has not been “scrapped” and is still chugging forward after a pick-up from Atlas Entertainment this time last year.
Variety’s report suggested the rights holders, World Events Productions and Classic Media, will start with a new toyline and cartoon TV series on Nicktoons (called “Voltron Force”) in lieu of a big screen adaptation.
However, in an interview with MTV, producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar confirmed the live-action version is coming and hinted at an A-list screenwriter coming aboard to rework the script. Justin Marks wrote an early draft of a post-apocalyptic quest that received high marks in online reviews, but it seems his take has been shelved indefinitely. The Voltron property has bounced around several companies, but never progressed further than the scripting phase.

It was just announced that the "Voltron" movie has been put on hold in order to develop an animated series that will re-introduce the characters. But now comes word from producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar that a "Voltron" feature film is still in development. "We've been working over the last several months meeting with various screenwriters, and we're actually on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter who's going to write the 'Voltron' movie," they told MTV News. The goal is to have the story focus on the characters rather than the robots. Kolplar said: "It's really about how you have five different personalities working together in order to come together to form Voltron. The whole show is about teamwork . about a group of kids with various backgrounds who learn that the only way they'll succeed is through the positive parts of each one's background and bringing...

Earlier this week it was reported that the live-action Voltron movie was scrapped in favor of a new rebooted animated TV series of the classic 80's TV show. I'm happy to tell you that today we've learned a live-action Voltron movie is actually in development! Who confirmed it? The films producers, Richard Suckie and Ted Koplar. The animated series that is coming out will serve as a lead-in to the live-action movie, which is what I suspected it was for.
The two producers sat down with MTV and cleared everything up regarding Voltron, and they even talk about how they are going to approach making the movie.
They are on the verge of hiring an A-level screenwriter to write the script.

A few days ago it was reported that the Voltron project was dead and buried, and was going to end up as another animated series.Looks as if those reports were false as MTV spoke with Voltron producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar who said the project is alive and well: MTV: Do you have a timeline in mind for the live-action film? Are there certain marks you want to hit in the roll-out of the "Voltron" universe? Suckle: You never can tell, but I think that if we're lucky going into 2011, and in a perfect world, if we could have a "Voltron" movie sometime in the summer of 2013, that would be what I would consider a very likely timeline. There have been rumors of a Voltron movie bubbling since back in 2005. That's five years of studios trying to pull their heads out of their asses long enough to get the Mattel line its own live-action feature film. In that same period, Michael Bay has produced two Transformers movies and developed plans for a third. It's never really looked that promising for a Voltron movie, and now they are officially closing the book on it. Variety says that while the robot team will be getting a new toy line and a series on Nicktoons, plans have officially been scrapped to bring them to theaters. According to Ted Koplar, the president of World Event Prods (the company that holds the rights), "It's an exciting way to introduce the brand to a generation that isn't familiar with Voltron." The good news is that "Voltron" fans won't have much longer to wait for the character's triumphant return to action. The bad news? It looks like plans for that live-action movie might not happen after all.
According to Variety, "Voltron" rights-holders World Event Prods and Classic Media have dropped plans to reignite interest in the franchise with a live-action movie, opting instead to develop a new, "edgier" animated series and toy line debuting next year. The "Voltron Force" series will broadcast on Nicktoons, and feature 26 half-hour episodes about "five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron, an invincible guardian sworn to defend the Universe."
Last we heard, the live-action film had taken a step forward by landing representation for its producers and rights-holders with United Talent Agency, but this week's report indicates that an inability to find the proper tone for the film stalled the project indefinitely.

The Visit
If you are one of the growing number of visitors to Voltron.com, you will have seen the website’s recent announcement: a new Lion Force animated series is coming to NickToons.
This announcement comes at a time when fans are both hopeful and fearful. Like fans of any genre offering, it is not enough for them to see the world and characters they have grown to love revived. They also want to see it done right. Voltron’s fans have seen other franchises revived, and they have borne witness to—and in many cases, have shared in—the disappointment of those franchises’ fans.
I count myself among these Voltron fans. I was a charter member of the post-Star Wars action figure boom, and as such I had dedicated the majority of my toy box’s space to the headquartering of my personal mix of begged-for and traded-for G.

With every Hollywood studio trying to capture a little Transformers magic for themselves, most of the 70s and 80s anime series about transforming sentient robots has been optioned for live-action development. And of course, that means someone’s unhappy and ready to sue.
