Without “Game of Thrones” in Emmy contention, the VFX race has become wide open, with “Stranger Things,” “Legion,” “Westworld,” “American Gods,” and “Black Mirror” stepping up with creepy characters and supernatural situations.
Highlights include the Demogorgon creature from “Stranger Things,” the exploding kitchen from “Legion,” the final reveal of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and all of her inner workings from “Westworld,” the incredible sex scene from “American Gods” with Bilquis, the Queen of Sheeba (Yetide Badaki), and the disgusting spider with a human head from the “Playtest” episode of “Black Mirror.”
Meet the Demogorgon from “Stranger Things”
The cool thing about the Demogorgon from “Stranger Things” (directed by the Duffer Brothers) is it fits so well with the ’80s low-tech vibe. As the boogeyman from the Upside Down (named from “Dungeons & Dragons”), the creature represents a wonderful hybrid of practical and CG.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” from the Duffer Brothers unmasks the dark side of the ’80s, and its nightmarish Upside Down also represents the perfect allegory for Trump’s America, too. Everything gets unhinged when a monster invades from another dimension and kidnaps youngsters. It’s Spielberg meets King meets Kubrick.
Creating the Town of Hawkins
For the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the Duffers shot in Atlanta, which still retains its mid-20th century sense of suburbia. “We weren’t making a slick, glossy version of the ’80s, but, rather, a gritty, textural feeling that is lost in high-definition movie-making these days,” said production designer Chris Trujillo.
For the central Byers house, the art department built a set with the right “lived in” look. It contained strategically interconnecting rooms, and set dressing from estate sale pillaging.

Coming straight out of your nightmares and into the number one box office spot this week is A Nightmare on Elm Street, the remake of the 1984 thriller. Relying on the some of the original's scare tactics, as well as incorporating new twists, the film was able to bank $32.9M over the weekend. MakingOf CEO Christine Aylward recently sat down with writer Wesley Strick and visual effects supervisor Mark Kolbe, who talked about what elements from the original were incorporated, and what they did to improve upon the classic horror film.
Despite poor reviews from critics, the film trounced it's closest competitor by over $21M (How to Train Your Dragon, $10.6M).
Dragon, with it's $10.6M showing this weekend, inched closer to the $200M domestic mark, with ticket sales now over $192M. The 3D flick, which initially fell short of big expectations at the box office, has benefitted from word of mouth...

Twenty six years after he first invaded our dreams, Freddy Krueger has returned to once again give us "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Visual Effects Supervisor Marc Kolbe and writer Wesley Strick sat down with MakingOf to discuss the similarities and differences between the 1984 original and the 2010 remake that is currently in theaters.
Despite negative reviews from critics, the film trounced it's closest competitor by over $21M (How to Train Your Dragon, $10.6M).

The 3D flick, which initially fell short of big expectations at the box office, has benefitted from word of mouth and held steady among the top films for the past month. So what's so appealing about the newest Dreamworks release? Well, the voices of stars like Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel (She's Out of My League), and America Ferrera certainly can't hurt.
