"One can break the chains – even if they are made of iron, they can be broken." Abramorama has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled She Rises Up, from acclaimed doc filmmaker Maureen Castle Tusty (also of The Singing Revolution previously). Set for release in limited US theaters starting late June this summer. She Rises Up reveals the explosive implications of women’s economic participation as we follow radically different women from Sri Lanka, Peru, and Senegal who are fighting to build businesses that create job opportunities for even more women, while also contributing to the reduction of poverty. With Abramorama orchestrating the theatrical release and Roco Films activating screening hosts for the film in non-traditional spaces, like college campuses, non-profits, churches and NGOs, the film will open in NYC at Look Dine-In Cinemas followed by more cities across the US. “Good evening, Hollywood-fucking-Bowl!” Paul McCartney exclaimed to the flock of Parrotheads gathered before him. A sold-out crowd had assembled in the famed Los Angeles venue on Thursday to celebrate the legacy of Jimmy Buffett at “Keep the Party Going,” a laid-back, one-night-only tribute show full of eclectic guests.
“I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy, and like everyone else on the bill tonight, I said, ‘This is one great man.’ He was generous. He was funny. He’d done just about everything in his life,” McCartney said, before launching into “Let It Be.

Les Amazones d’Afrique began in 2017 as a sisterly supergroup of singers from the West African region of Mali. Founded by Mamani Keïta, Mariam Doumbia (of Amadou and Mariam), and Oumou Sangare, and convened by French music-industry veteran Valerie Malot, the collective came together through a shared musical vision, as well as the goal of championing gender equality and bringing attention to the pressing issue of violence against women.

Equal Strain on All Parts, the 31st and final album from the late Jimmy Buffett, is out now.
Comprising 11 originals and three covers, Equal Strain on All Parts is a fitting final entry in Buffett’s studio catalog. It features an array of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Angelique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Naturally, Equal Strain is a mostly lighthearted record, its title inspired by Buffett’s grandfather’s description of a good nap. With a tracklist including song names like “Fish Porn,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” “University of Bourbon Street,” and “Nobody Works on Friday,” it encapsulates the most important tenet in Buffett’s artistry: Having a good time.
Pre-orders for Equal Strain on All Parts are ongoing. Stream the record via Apple Music and Spotify below.
Buffett died this past September at the age of 76 after a prolonged battle with skin cancer and lymphoma.

When Jimmy Buffett died on September 1, he left a finished album in the can ready for release. Equal Strain on All Parts, his 32nd LP, is every bit the laidback, eclectic, inviting set of tunes you’d expect from the beloved singer-songwriter, bridging pop, country, and rock & roll, mixing island sounds and down-home vibes, and balancing five-o’clock-somewhere good times with gentle life wisdom.
The casually rocking “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” was inspired by something Paul McCartney’s wife Nancy Shevell said to Buffett at a dinner party, and features McCartney on bass.

Mr Eazi has been a leading figure in the world of Afrobeats for years, and he’s always had an expansive definition of that ever-rising music’s sonic and cultural possibilities. The Nigerian-born artist, who now mainly lives in Accra, Ghana, has collaborated with Beyoncé and Diplo, and among his most popular songs is a 2019 cut with J Balvin and Bad Bunny. In fact, as Afrobeats’ profile has grown, he’s bristled at broad catchall genre terms to characterize music from throughout Africa, arguing for less reductive treatment.

Before his death, Jimmy Buffett put his distinct spin on one of the most Buffett-esque songs Bob Dylan ever wrote, “Mozambique,” even enlisting Emmylou Harris — who sang backup on the original — to reprise her role. The cover will appear on the upcoming posthumous Buffett album, Equal Strain on All Parts, out Nov. 3.
Dylan’s original, off 1976’s Desire, is plenty jaunty and sun-soaked on its own, though not without some ramshackle touches. Buffett and Harris keep that original energy while smoothing out some of the edges, most notably substituting the...

Although he’d been coping with health issues during the last few years of his life, Jimmy Buffett remained productive, working on his first record of new music since 2020. That album, Equal Strain on All Parts, due Nov. 3, was completed shortly before his death of skin cancer at 76 on Sept. 1. Three new songs will preview the record: “Bubbles Up,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” and “Like My Dog.”
“Bubbles Up,” the first song to be unveiled, is a reflective ballad that, like later Buffett songs such as “Tides,” reveals a deeper side to his music.

A version of this story about Greg Philinganes and Joni Mitchell first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Of the many musical-tribute specials that aired during the past Emmy season, few had the emotional clout of PBS’ “Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song: Joni Mitchell.” For starters, it featured a stellar array of musicians paying tribute to the pioneering singer-songwriter — among them Annie Lennox, Cyndi Lauper, Angelique Kidjo, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Brandi Carlile and Marcus Mumford performing songs that included “Both Sides Now,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Blue,” “Carey” and “Shine.”
But at the end of the night, it also included the 79-year-old Mitchell herself, eight years after a brain aneurysm that forced her to relearn how to walk and sing, performing an exquisite version of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” in a voice far different...

Joni Mitchell took a long and much-needed hiatus from the stage, but it looks like she’s trying her best to make up for the lost time: The legendary folk artist performed Wednesday night at the Dar Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, during a tribute show that also featured many of her musical friends and peers. The event was in celebration of her receiving the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

The show also featured performances from Marcus Mumford, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Ledisi, and Angélique Kidjo. Mitchell gave the final performance of the night: She paid tribute to the prize’s namesake George Gershwin by singing “Summertime,...

As Giddens and Simon perform “American Tune,” you may feel like you’ve gone off to find America, and actually kinda succeeded in that search, over the course of just one number.

Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Angélique Kidjo returned to her home country Bénin last week to meet children and young people impacted by the spillover of violence from the Sahel crisis and climate change in the region.
The deteriorating security situation in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger, as well as rising food prices as a result of climate induced shocks, are affecting access to essential social services for children, refugees, and internally displaced persons in northern Benin. In some border areas with Sahel countries, a number of schools have been temporarily closed, malnutrition in children under five has risen, while some health centers are facing challenges with maintaining operations. Local social welfare authorities have reported increases in domestic violence, gender-based violence, and violence against children.

Unicef UK President, Olivia Colman, visited the Unicef Global Supply and Logistics Hub in Copenhagen last week, where supplies are being shipped to Ukraine, and other humanitarian crises around the world, including Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Pakistan, South Sudan and Yemen.
During the visit Olivia Colman helped to pack supplies due to be sent to children and families in Ukraine, adding items to the Unicef Early Child Development kit filled with puzzles, puppets, balls and games – including a hand-written message from Olivia. These kits provide a range of activities to encourage the development and social interaction of children and help aid the recovery of children who have witnessed the horrors of the war in Ukraine, allowing them to play and learn in a safe environment.
Olivia also saw the Unicef School-in-a-Box, Recreation Kit and Family Hygiene Kit, all of which have been shipped to Ukraine since the outbreak of the war in February this year.

Every Grammy year brings intense discourse, and part of it is usually centered around those Wtf picks that most people weren’t expecting. While most of them can be explained logically, it is still wild to see one or two expected nominees take a hit for a song or album that seemed to come out of nowhere. With that in mind, here are five shocking nominations from this year’s eclectic list.
Bonnie Raitt, “Just Like That” (Song of the Year)
Perhaps the most head-scratching addition to the Song of the Year lineup to most people was Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That.” Once you listen to the song, though, it’s clear why it has such a devoted following: it’s a captivating storytelling-based song about loss and faith written by Raitt herself. Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas travelled to Uttar Pradesh in northern India this week to visit Unicef programmes helping to improve children’s education, and access to health, nutrition, and protection.
During the two-day visit, Chopra Jonas met adolescent girls from Unicef-supported gender programmes who spoke about their challenges and how they’re overcoming gender discrimination, mental stress, and violence that they face due to prevailing social norms.
“I’m so inspired by the resilience of the young girls I met on this visit. They’ve overcome trauma and violence in their families, faced mental health challenges, and tackled child labour,” Chopra Jonas said. “The programmes I visited, supported by Unicef and run by the Government, empower and nurture girls. They learn that there is strength in working with others when speaking out about the challenges they face and identifying the change they want to make for their future.

They learn that there is strength in working with others when speaking out about the challenges they face and identifying the change they want to make for their future.

It took the combined talents of four Grammy winners, a symphony orchestra and a choir of African-American opera singers to make “The Woman King” resonate with the sounds of 19th-century West Africa.
“This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime films,” says composer Terence Blanchard of director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s project, for which he wrote a powerful score – the likes of which haven’t been heard in a period African film since Quincy Jones’ “Roots” 45 years ago.
“All of your experiences lead you to this moment, to work on something like this,” says the two-time Oscar nominee and five-time Grammy winner. “As soon as I saw it, I was floored. I looked at these characters as the founding DNA of all the strong African-American women I experienced growing up.”

Horse Opera. At a Toronto International Film Festival Industry panel entitled “Powering Entertainment with TikTok,” one of the platform’s most popular Toronto-based creators—Boman Martinez-Reid, a.k.a. @bomanizer—was asked to share his greatest dream. He gamely offered a few options: originally, he wanted to act, and TikTok allowed him to prove his talent without a traditional portfolio. Now, he’s known for painstakingly detailed parodies of the Real Housewives franchise, each of which average about a million likes. Ultimately, he said, he wants to commit to creating, to growing his audience. Another panelist, Catherine Halaby, TikTok’s Head of Entertainment in North America, concurred that her employer represented a new direction for entertainment: a breaking down of the “gatekeeper walls.”The root, utilitarian question—what is your dream, what are you trying to achieve?—was on my mind during the first weekend of TIFF, itself a peculiar set of gatekeeper walls.

It is no secret that Hollywood has historically not taken the importance of showcasing Black talent very seriously. That's why "The Woman King," which premieres tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival, is considered to be a game-changer. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film has a cast compromised almost entirely of Black actors from several corners of the African diaspora.

Viola Davis is no stranger to transformations. In the past couple years alone, she’s played DC’s Amanda Waller, Ma Rainey and even Michelle Obama. But in the warrior epic “The Woman King,” the trailer for which dropped Wednesday, Davis plays a character unlike any she’s played before.
Davis stars in the film as Nanisca, the general of the real all-female military unit known as the Agojie (also known as Amazons) in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The story is inspired by true events and follows Nanisca and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, as they fight enemies who have enslaved their people and violated their honor. The unit is the inspiration behind the Dora Milaje in “Black Panther,” and its story has never been told on screen before.
Davis told Vanity Fair that she underwent serious training for the physically demanding role.

This time last year, Joni Mitchell was Zooming in to Clive Davis’ virtual Grammy party — kicking off the night with wine and dressed in finery, and then, as the hours wore on, kicking back to watch performers in pajamas, with popcorn and her trusty ginger cat Bootsy in tow. (Bootsy was named after Puss and Boots if you must know — and we must.)
This year, however, she strides down the red carpet in Las Vegas in a sparkling shawl and beret at the Grammys’ MusiCares Person of the Year event — for which,...

For this year’s Icons & Influences issue, we asked 10 artists to pay tribute to the women who have shaped their sound, provided an example, and inspired them to break down barriers. Benin-born singer Angélique Kidjo remembers her “musical mother,” the late South African artist-activist Miriam Makeba.
