For a genre saturated with rom-com movies ridden with unrealistic notions of what romance should look like, director Nahnatchka Khan’s Always Be My Maybe is a breath of fresh air. The 2019 romantic comedy has a genuine touch in many ways without following the stereotypical approach associated with movies of its ilk. A play-on-words of the title of Mariah Carey‘s 1996 song Always Be My Baby, the film explores the importance of remembering your roots no matter where life takes you. Co-written by Ali Wong and Randall Park, who also play the lead roles, Always Be My Maybe was released...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

The state of horror in 2023 is strong. Familiar names such as Brandon Cronenberg and Eli Roth returned with "Infinity Pool" and "Thanksgiving" and so did "Re-Animator" screenwriter Dennis Paoli, writer of "Suitable Flesh," his first realized feature script in over 20 years. Old franchises returned, too, with "Evil Dead Rise" and even "Saw X" doing well critically and commercially. Less established filmmakers have also made an impression, namely Nahnatchka Khan, director of "Totally Killer," and Danish debut filmmaker Gabriel Bier Gislason, who helmed "Attachment."
But away from "M3GAN," "When Evil Lurks" and the numerous other highlights, there were still some disappointments that were lackluster, recycled, underplayed, overplayed, or in one or two cases, just underwhelming in almost every aspect of production. There is little pleasure to be had in chronicling such disappointment, but it is a service any critic must provide at one time or another. So let's dig into some...

Since its official release on Prime Video on October 6, 2023, Totally Killer has enjoyed positive reviews from critics and audiences. While its story may not feel original, given the genre it is based on, its plot would undoubtedly keep audiences glued to the end. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, Totally Killer is a black comedy slasher film that features and takes jabs at slasher tropes. Although several scenes may seem predictable, viewers can expect amusing one-liners throughout the movie’s runtime. Totally Killer is set in the small town of Vernon. After the town’s Sweet 16 Killer resurfaces after 35 years,...

"Our goal is scary and original," Jason Blum said of Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023. "Even when we're doing IP or sequels, we always try to do something new."
Blum is a curator of the bloodcurdling, often with a dash of comedic rib-cracking. After all, he told his fans that "comedy and horror are cousins in many ways." The timing of a scare is linked to the timing of a joke. His producing credits include the likes of "M3GAN" and the "Halloween" trilogy. With that in mind, a house of horror-heads gathered at New York Comic Con's "Blumfest" to splash into more Blum-produced films, from the time travel hijinks of "Totally Killer," an evil swimming pool in "Night Swim," and the highly anticipated video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's." Time is the slasher genre’s ultimate villain. As final girls like Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott slow down with age, the masked killers who relentlessly pursue them never lose a step. Rather than heal all wounds, time’s inexorable passage wears down the surviving heroes of “Halloween,” “Scream” and other enduring franchises while their injuries (not all of them visible) continue to fester. It was probably inevitable, then, that the genre itself would eventually become as nostalgic as it is — especially as regards the 1980s. “Totally Killer” is hardly the first slasher to fondly recall that decadent decade, but “Always Be My Maybe” director Nahnatchka Khan’s time-traveling crossover takes a more nuanced view of it than most.
Its lore concerns the Sweet Sixteen Killer, who stabbed three 16-year-old girls to death in 1987 before vanishing without being caught. He wore a distinctive mask while knifing the girls 16 times each,...

“This isn’t ‘Back to the Future,'” time-traveling Kiernan Shipka is told in “Totally Killer” — and it definitely isn’t. For one, her teenage mom is decidedly not interested in her when she lands in 1987; the ringleader of a mean girls clique called “The Mollies” (they all love Molly Ringwald), she’s definitely not the nervous mom Shipka’s Jamie knew so well. At least, until the serial killer who stabbed the other three Mollies back in ’87 reappears in 2023, murdering Jamie’s mom and sending Jamie back in time.
As Jamie rushes to prevent the Sweet 16 killer from picking off her mom’s friends, the story toggles back and forth between 1987 and the present day, where her best friend is working to create a new time machine. And director Nahnatchka Khan and cinematographer Judd Overton spoke a lot about keeping the two time periods recognizably separate.

Don Coscarelli takes a creative approach to addressing the sluggish nature of standard ancient mummies; he unleashes the monster upon a pool of potential victims too feeble to outrun it. Bruce Campbell stars as an aged man claiming to be the still-living Elvis Presley. Totally Killer director Nahnatchka Khan has quietly become one of the preeminent comedic voices in town.
As the creator of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Fresh Off the Boat, Khan took her sensibilities to feature films in 2019, helming the well-received Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. The rom-com, which starred Khan’s frequent collaborators Ali Wong and Randall Park, was embraced by 89 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to make an impact in an overcrowded streaming market. Keanu Reeves’ role as a version of himself and his subsequent kiss-blowing meme certainly factored into Always Be My Maybe’s success, and it’s become one of the go-to examples of how Netflix has kept the rom-com alive in an era where the major studios no longer prioritize the genre.

What if a killer time traveled with you to thwart your plan of saving your mother whom he had already killed? Yes, that’s exactly what happens in the movie, but it’s not so simple as there is a twist to it. Totally Killer, the new film, has horror, comedy, and action, and if you weren’t satisfied, it has a whole time travel plot that will remind you of the great films on this topic. With a mix of the plots of Terminator and Back to the Future, director Nahnatchka Khan creates her own style of slasher, innovatively recreating the eighties mood. In essence, Totally Killer is a slasher, and hence makes use of the fact that slashers usually surprise us with the second killer.

If you look at Nahnatchka Khan's filmography, you won't see many titles suggesting she'd be a good fit for a bloody slasher movie. However, you will see plenty of titles that suggest she'd be ideal for a time traveling comedy about mothers and daughters, and how culture has shifted over the past 30 years. The fact that she can deliver a nasty slasher sequence in the new horror comedy "Totally Killer" will leave fans of her past work a little dizzy.
"Totally Killer" is built around one heck of a high concept pitch: What if a modern teen (Kieran Shipka), grieving the death of her murdered mother, goes back in time to the '80s to stop the killer's initial reign of terror, lower the body count, and ensure her mom's survival in the present? It's "Back to the Future" with a body count, leaning on '80s tropes without ever getting too nostalgic.

A time traveler moves a chair, and the whole timeline is altered. You must have seen this meme online. The new film Totally Killer makes the right choice to not overcomplicate things. Sure, when Jamie Hughes accidentally goes back to 1987, and tries to alter things, a few significant things do get changed, but they are not overwhelmingly altered. Also, her main focus was not to change the romance between her parents when they were in high school, but to stop a serial killer who began his hunt in 1987. See, it’s all a bit complicated, but it could have been disastrous if it hadn’t been handled with care by director Nahnatchka Khan. The idea is great on paper, and with a clear vision for Totally Killer, Khan manages to merge the sci-fi and slasher genres together to come up with great characters.

It’s always refreshing when a filmmaker takes a risk, and it pays off. That is what cinema is: a risk. On one hand, you can try and make a great film, and it might turn out to be a pretentious bore. On the other hand, there is just too much money riding on the film for you to be having all the fun without worrying about the final product. Totally Killer, directed by Nahnatchka Khan, is one of those films that did take risks and, within the given budget, managed to be a wacky film that really caters to a large part of the audience. Broadly, this has to fall under the horror-comedy genre, but believe it or not, this is as much a sci-fi film as it is a horror or a comedy. The risks are not too obvious, but this combination of genres usually does not gel very well.

If you mixed Back to the Future and Halloween, or if The Final Girls had involved traveling in time instead of into a movie, the results might be something like Totally Killer. It’s a time traveling spoof of slasher movies from Blumhouse who already visited this territory with Happy Death Day and its sequel.

It was directed by Nahnatchka Khan who is best known for Always Be My Maybe and Young Rock and had no genre experience. Similarly, the three writers David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Married) and Jen D’Angelo were lacking in that regard as well. But since it...

“Totally killer” is a blend of comedy and horror in the slasher genre. You know, it’s a spoof of ‘Halloween’ the film and the countless Michael Myers movies.
It takes us back to the 80’s, ideal for those who are feeling nostalgic. While its cinematic quality is lacking in quality, you still might find it worth a watch.

It’s the spooky season, and teen thriller Totally Killer looks to satisfy that itch for scares. But what appears to be a horror film spoof at first, suddenly morphs into a mash-up of Halloween and Back To The Future, when a sixteen-year-old girl goes back in time to the 1980s to solve a Halloween triple killing by the “Sweet Sixteen Killer.”
A Halloween – Back To The Future mash-up isn’t a bad idea but that idea gets bogged down in 1980s nostalgia that sucks the energy out of the horror scares, and even the humor, like a vampire. Do you long for the ’80s? Even if you don’t remember them? Well, someone wanted to revisit that era of big hair, big shoulders, garish fashions and John Hughes films, so we get Totally Killer.

Meeting your mother when you’re both teens can screw seriously with your head. Meeting your mom as a teen when there’s a serial killer targeting your teen mom and her circle of friends, however, can lead to an altogether different set of problems, beginning — and quite possibly ending — with saving your mother from said serial killer milliseconds before you start up your time machine and head back to the future. That premise drives Nahnatchka Khan’s (Always Be My Maybe) latest addition to her filmography, Totally Killer, a sci-fi/slasher hybrid that leans heavily — sometimes too heavily — on two hyper-exaggerated versions of America, our current, presumably more enlightened, more "woke" one, versus the regressive,...

Nahnatchka Khan’s Totally Killer is an entertaining riff on John Carpenter’s Halloween by way of Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future. It might not be quite as incisive a piece of genre dismemberment as Wes Craven’s Scream or Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods, but it has a lot of fun poking at the tricks and tropes of slasher movies all the same.
Totally Killer begins in a small suburban town where a masked murderer known as The Sweet Sixteen Killer gruesomely slayed three teenage girls on Halloween night in 1987.
