Paul Feig was just a couple of days away from wrapping the sequel to “A Simple Favor” in Italy when he got to share some very good news with the cast – the first film is currently the No. 1 most watched movie on Netflix.
“I sent it to all my main cast saying, ‘Hey, we’re doing the right thing here,” Feig says on a phone call from the movie’s Rome set.
Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick and Henry Golding reprise their original roles for the followup. New cast members include Tony winner Alex Newell and Oscar winner and frequent Feig collaborator Allison Janney.
The 2018 movie stars Kendrick as widowed vlogger Stephanie who takes it upon herself to investigate the disappearance of her friend Emily (Lively). The $20 million crime comedy grossed nearly $100,000,000 in the U.S.
“I’m thrilled,” Feig says about being on the top of the Netflix movies chart.

Netflix continues its hunt for old flicks that were big hits back in the day as the streaming keeps expanding its already infinite collection of movies and shows, and one of its recent arrivals was very quick to climb the top of Netflix’s American chart.
A crime comedy thriller A Simple Favour, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, landed on Netflix a couple of weeks ago and now seems to be everyone’s top watch, just like it was back in 2018.
According to the latest data provided by FlixPatrol, A Simple Favour is currently holding a number one position in the streaming’s top 10 chart in the US, followed by Marvel’s recent big flop Madame Web and an animated movie Thelma the Unicorn.
Based on Darcey Bell’s 2017 novel of the same name, A Simple Favour follows two young mothers who, despite being closer to each other than to anyone else,...

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Are we on the verge of a Livelaissance? Four years after her last live-action movie role, Blake Lively is returning to the big screen this year with "It Ends With Us." The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling toxic relationship novel made waves this past week with the arrival of its trailer, which even came fitted with an appropriately bleary-eyed tune by Lively's buddy Taylor Swift. It's also a reminder of just how well Livelites (which is what I'm calling Lively fans until I come up with a better name) were eating in the 2010s.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is This What I Told Myself It Would Be?
Directed by Marjane Satrapi and written by Michael R. Perry, “The Voices” has a phenomenal trailer — snappy, stunning, and with a hunky Chinese Elvis impersonator! I would know; I’ve seen it dozens of times in the decade since Lionsgate made the movie: a feature that, up until now, I haven’t watched and will be using this week’s IndieWire After Dark to recommend to myself. Let me (us?) explain.

The Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) is getting a market.
TIFF on Thursday confirmed that it will add an official film market to run alongside its festival program, billing the venture as the “North American hub for buying and selling screen-based projects, intellectual property, and immersive and innovative content across all platforms” that aims to “elevate Canadian and international talent while driving global distribution and sales.”
Toronto has long been a spot where business gets done — major deals for the upcoming The Crow reboot and Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut Woman of the Hour were inked at or just before TIFF last year — but unlike Cannes or Berlin, the festival has never had an official bazaar where buyers and sellers can set up shop. Instead, U.S. and international film buyers and sellers networked and did business informally while circulating around the festival or in hotel rooms, rather than under one roof.

Looking back, can we imagine a bright-eyed Rebel Wilson stepping onto the set of Paul Feig’s 2011 comedy flick Bridesmaids, ready to dive into the challenging waters of Hollywood? Who could have predicted the bittersweet symphony that would follow her joy at receiving her first American paycheck?
Recently, this cheery Australian actress, known for her exceptional wit and comedic timing, humbly shared her success story and the financial struggle during the Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. Despite being cast in a hit 2011 comedy that catapulted her into the spotlight, Wilson revealed that the joy was tempered by the harsh reality of a $3,500 salary being swallowed up almost entirely by SAG-AFTRA “union” dues.

Hulu comedy head Billy Rosenberg is exiting the streamer after more than seven years. Rosenberg, who most recently served as senior VP of comedy for Hulu Originals, has not yet been replaced.
Rosenberg’s tenure at Hulu came with the elevation of the streamer’s comedy brand, as he developed hits including “Pen15,” “Ramy,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Pam & Tommy,” “This Fool” and “Solar Opposites.”
He initially joined as director of comedy at Hulu Originals. Prior to being tapped by Hulu, Rosenberg ran The Lonely Island’s comedy Party Over Here, as head of development and production. Working closely with Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone for two years, the television and film producer executive produced a number of pilot presentations under their Fox deal. He also produced the feature film “Brigsby Bear” with then-“Saturday Night Live” cast member Kyle Mooney, and collaborated with Joe Swanberg on his Netflix series “Easy.

Film financier BondIt Media Capital has closed a new co-financing partnership with Cineverse for North American production, acquisition and distribution of film projects.
First up under the deal is distribution support for Cineverse (and its horror division Bloody Disgusting) for upcoming Terrifier 3, the third installment in the worldwide cult horror phenomenon featuring Art the Clown.
Micro-budget Terrifier 2 released in the fall of 2022 grossed more than $15 million in worldwide box office. The production companies behind the film, Dark Age Cinema and The Coven, re-teamed with filmmaker Damien Leone (and David Howard Thornton as Art the Clow) for Terrifier 3, which wrapped production in New York last month and is set for an October 11, 2024 theatrical release.
Cineverse (formerly Cinedigm) and led by former MGM chairman Chris McGurk has previously said the film will “unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.

With all the never-ending updates coming straight from the production set, there’s absolutely no doubt that A Simple Favor’s sequel won’t take too long to finally arrive on the screens. Starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, the fashionable comedy thriller blew everyone away back in 2018 — and now, 6 years later, it’s finally arrived to the streaming.
Based on Darcey Bell’s 2017 novel of the same name, A Simple Favour follows two best friends who seemingly have completely different paths.
Stephanie, portrayed by Anna Kendrick, is a widowed single mother who found her vocation in running her own vlog about parental life hacks. Emily, played by Blake Lively, seems to be her friend’s exact antithesis with all the posh lifestyle that she’s used to thanks to a successful career and loving husband beside her.

Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. Rebel Wilson details how Hollywood’s pay scales can increase exponentially in her new memoir, Rebel Rising. The actress and comedian opens up about her salaries for Bridesmaids and the Pitch Perfect trilogy.
Wilson writes in the book that she was paid only $3,500 for 2011’s Bridesmaids, which starred Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy (Wilson played Brynn, the obnoxious roommate of Wiig’s Annie Walker). But the entirety of her small check went to Screen Actors Guild fees to join the union. Nevertheless, “that didn’t matter to me,” Wilson writes. “The experience was everything!”
Wilson notes she booked six new gigs within two weeks of Bridesmaids‘ release, one of which was the 2012 a cappella smash hit, Pitch Perfect.
“Boy, did that movie pay dividends!” Wilson writes, noting she was paid “SAG minimum scale, which was $65,000,” for the film. Pitch Perfect’s success spawned two sequels, in...

After 8 Years, Ben Affleck’s Thriller Regains Popularity On Netflix. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After eight long years since its triumphant reign in cinemas, the mighty saga of Ben Affleck’s action-thriller, “The Accountant,” rises again, casting its shadow upon Netflix. During the week of March 25-31, the film seized the fourth throne on Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart, commanding 13.2 million hours of loyal viewership and 6.2 million devoted followers. Yet, it found itself trailing behind the recent Netflix epics, including the enchanted “Irish Wish” of Lindsay Lohan and the captivating “Damsel” of Millie Bobby Brown, each reigning supreme for three and four weeks, respectively.
Theatrically released back in 2016, the electrifying action-thriller introduces Ben Affleck as the enigmatic Christian Wolff, a maestro of mathematics and a certified accountant with a knack for straightening out financial chaos in the shadowy realms of crime. "The Accountant" is an incredibly silly movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. There's something wonderful about a movie this ridiculous, especially since everything that happens in the film is played completely straight. Here is a movie with approximately fifty different subplots, all of them jumbled together into one goofy action extravaganza. At the center of it all is the titular accountant, an autistic man played by Ben Affleck. Affleck's character, who goes by the name Christian Wolff, helps criminals with their finances. Who does a drug lord turn to when they need to handle expenses? They can't just walk into H&r Block, now can they? But wait, not only is Christian a criminal accountant, but he's also a highly skilled assassin with perfect aim. When he was a kid, his father trained him to become a killing machine. Why? Why not? Just go with it.

Released back in 2016 and starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, and Jean Smart, The Accountant was a major hit for Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor. The movie successfully combined Affleck’s autistic accountant, Christian Wolff, with an action-filled storyline that had both fans and critics praising the movie. And while we’ve known that a sequel is in the works for some time now, Collider exclusively reports that the filming of The Accountant 2 is set to begin in Los Angeles next week.
This was confirmed by one of the movies’ main actors, J.K. Simmons, who sat down for an interview for Collider and said the following:
“Yeah, I head to LA in a little over a week to do some rehearsals and pre-production and start shooting my chunk of it. I’m not even sure, I think they start...

The Pitch Perfect family has grown quite so much over the years, and we think that is a-ca-awesome!
Believe it or not, it’s been more than a decade since the franchise introduced us to the Barden Bellas and showcased Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp and so many more stars’ vocal abilities.
In the series, they’re just a bunch of college-aged students making music using only their mouths. However, in real life the talented cast is so much more. Notably, a good amount of them are adults with kids of their own.
In total, seven Pitch Perfect stars are already parents. The list includes someone who just welcomed a little one in early 2024.
We pulled together all of the Pitch Perfect stars who have and added one cast member to the list who revealed why they do not want to be a parent. Their reasoning might surprise you!

In honor of International Women’s Day, IndieWire is pleased to share its annual female filmmakers to watch list featuring a rising assortment of women writers and directors with some of the biggest projects of the year.
On the big screen, Theda Hammel’s Sundance breakout “Stress Positions” went on to become a leading title on this year’s New Directors/New Films lineup and is set to close out the festival. Alessandra Lacorazza’s “In the Summers” won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, and also earned Lacorazza the Directing prize. Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani co-wrote and co-directed SXSW selected film “I Love You Forever,” which is produced by Diablo Cody.
While David also co-stars in the film, another actress makes her directorial debut with a similarly sinister premiere: Anna Kendrick directs and stars in “Woman of the Hour” based on the haunting true story of the “Dating Game” killer.

The Ben Affleck-led sequel to his 2016 crime film The Accountant has a new home as it gears up for a production start later this month.
The follow-up thriller has moved to Amazon MGM Studios after it was previously in development for many years at Warner Bros., The Hollywood Reporter has learned. THR initially reported back in 2017 that a sequel was in the works.
The action thriller is already deep into the casting process and has J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson back on the call sheet after they appeared in the original.
The move from studio to streamer took place over the course of last summer, during the actors and writers strikes, according to sources. The sequel was a priority during the heady days of the HBO Max era when the studio was developing big-name feature projects intended for its newly launched and very shiny streaming service. Once...
