Commentator most well-known for his work on sport, including the football World Cups of 1970-1986, the Olympic Games, and Wimbledon. He joined the BBC in 1965 as a sports assistant, and fell ill there 25 years later while narrating the Boat Race, later dying in hospital. His son Stuart (one of twins) writes about football for the London Times.
