- In 1962 he was approached by a 20-year-old musician named Brian Jones about joining a band that would become The Rolling Stones, but he declined the offer as he had just auditioned to be a singer with a dance band.
- He was the lead singer of the 1960s band Manfred Mann.
- Has occasionally been mistaken for actor-singer Paul Nicholas, actor Bill Nighy and as a member of British pop group The Hollies. His wife-to-be Fiona Hendley thought he was Peter Noone (of Herman's Hermits) when she first met him.
- He was photographed for the front cover of the Radio Times (15 - 21 December 1973) with his son Matthew, Jon Pertwee, Michael Parkinson and Vanessa Miles.
