It was a time Mammootty was hoping to get into cinema, and Innocent had already donned a few minor characters in movies like Nellu, Nirthashaala, and Jesus. "I noticed him, wondering who this person was," Mammootty wrote in a personal note on his Facebook page on Tuesday,...

ObituaryInnocent will go down in the history of Malayalam cinema as a stupendously talented actor, who spread unmitigated joy on screen, writes Neelima Menon. The heavily pronounced Irinjalakuda slang, that bashful tilt of his head, the peculiar gesticulations, the fine balance between subtlety and hyperbole, and the unforgettable one-liners delivered with soft precision. What made Innocent one of the most cheering sights in Malayalam cinema is all of these and more. Like most in his legion of stupendously talented supporting actors, Innocent flourished during the late 1980s and 90s, popularly termed as the ‘golden period’ in Malayalam cinema. It was during this period that Innocent, who had already made his debut as an actor and producer a decade earlier, found that his niche lay in initiating Malayalam cinema into the realm of satire. So after 50-60 films in which he played notable as well as forgettable characters, Innocent allied with...

DeathFrom being slapstick silly and lighthearted to sarcastic, shameless and quirky, there was no type of humour he couldn't pull off.Malayalam actor and politician Innocent passed away at the age of 75 at 10.30 pm on Sunday, March 26, due to Covid-19 related respiratory issues leading to organ failure and cardiac arrest. MollywoodThe Shaji Kailas era in Malayalam cinema gave leverage to the emergence of the bombast-spouting alpha male heroes on screen. At a time when flawed, sensitive male characters are finding space on the screen, where do his alpha male heroes feature? Neelima MenonThe word is that filmmakers of the older generation from Sibi Malayil, Sathyan Anthikad, and Kamal to Lal Jose, are all struggling to make an impact, with their cinematic graphs showing a decline in the last 10 years. Among them is Shaji Kailas, one of the most successful mainstream filmmakers in Malayalam cinema, who had been in self-imposed exile for a long time since 2013 after his Malayalam film, Ginger (2013), a comedy headlining Jayaram, sank without a trace. Now 9 years later, when Malayalam cinema is chasing newer narratives, milieus, and subverting cliches and stereotypes, Shaji Kailas re-emerged with Kaduva, a story set in the ’90s, headlining an alpha male hero...

“Wonder Woman” is a war movie. Patty Jenkins’ first — and we hope not last — entry into the DC Expanded Universe is primarily set during World War I, but while the feature doesn’t balk at war-time violence, it’s the internal battles of its compelling heroine that are most vital. Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince (aka Wonder Woman, though no one calls her as such in this standalone feature) made her Dceu debut in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” initially positioned as a possible adversary to Batman before coming on board of what will become the Justice League, and Jenkins’ feature flips back through time to deliver an origin story that functions beautifully on its own while also bolstering excitement for the franchise’s future.
This Diana is startlingly pure of heart and clear-eyed in her vision. She’s a neat sort-of throwback to the circa-1978 “Superman,” which...

Unpopular opinion of the week: Monday’s Sleepy Hollow could have benefitted from more Katrina.
I know. For at least half the season, I’ve been advocating reduced screen time for the witch — or, at least, a purpose for her that’s more than wringing of hands and botching of spells.
But after the ending to last week’s episode, in which it appeared that Red had accidentally catapaulted over to the dark side, I really wanted to see what Mrs. Crane was up to.

Looking back at 2011 on what films moved and impressed us it becomes more and more clear—to me at least—that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, our end of year poll, now an annual tradition, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2011—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2011 to create a unique double feature. Many contributors chose their favorites of 2011, some picked out-of-the-way gems, others made some pretty strange connections—and some frankly just want to create a kerfuffle. All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2011 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative...

In 1941, a group of men from various countries and personal backgrounds makes a daring escape from a Russian gulag during the height of the Soviet Union’s brutal and inhumane rise to power as a Communist powerhouse. This rag tag group of men traveled more than 4,000 miles by foot across the most rugged and harsh landscapes; across the bitter cold of Siberia, through the endless desert and finally across the Himalayan mountains, to reach their freedom, defined differently by each man. Three men survived this awesome trek. The Way Back is inspired by these real events.

With two episodes left until probable annihilation, it’s becoming clear that V is probably never going to be a good show. Several creative teams have all tried rebooting the show in different directions: in just 20 episodes, V has been an alarmist political parable, a 24-style espionage thriller, a gory creature feature, and now a Leverage-style heist show. None of these sub-shows have been particularly successful. (If there was a golden age, it was the bloody, lizard-happy episodes that kicked off season 2.) But V still has a secret weapon: Elizabeth Mitchell, who can make the phone book sound compellingly morally ambiguous.
