Sara David, running unopposed, has been elected vice president of the WGA East representing online media members, and Kathy McGee beat two other candidates to become vice president representing members working in the broadcast/cable/streaming news sector.
David, a digital editor at Paramount+/Viacom CBS for unscripted series, currently serves on the WGA East Council, the guild’s governing body. McGee, a news writer at Wcbs New York City, has served on the guild’s Council and on its Committee for Inclusion and Equity.
This is the guild’s first election since its members voted overwhelmingly in June to amend the Wgae constitution and restructure the guild to ensure a more “balanced representation” among its three work sectors: film/television/streaming, broadcast/cable/streaming news, and online media. Election of the guild’s president, secretary-treasurer and vice president representing the film/TV/streaming sector will be held next year.

The Sept. 15 election will divide governance of the guild among 12 members from the Film/TV/Streaming sector representing writers of narrative scripted movies and TV series; five from the Online Media sector covering digital news and media writers; and three from the Broadcast/Cable/Streaming sector covering broadcast and cable news programming.
The governing body for the Writers Guild of America East also includes five officer positions: president, secretary-treasurer and three vice presidents, representing one from each work sector. Online and mail-in voting begins Sept. 1 and ends Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. Et.

“I speak heavily in analogies,” Sloane Crosley said Saturday at BookCon, where A.M. Homes interviewed her in front of seventy or so fans at the Javits Center. The celebrated essayist (and, full disclosure, a friend) was here to talk up her first novel, The Clasp, a major Farrar Straus and Giroux title out this coming fall, about three estranged college friends who embark on a French road trip in search of a lost piece of jewelry. It's an homage to Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” and the event began with a slightly campy reading of that famous short story by Barbara Rosenblat, introduced as “the Meryl Streep of audio books,” but possibly more familiar as cancer-stricken Rosa from Orange is the New Black. Following that, the two writers fell into some banter about the writing process, riffing on famous quotes and odd analogies like Abbot and Costello at a...

'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner On the Finale's Secrets and Why He Thinks Binge-Viewing is Bad News
Nearly a week after "Mad Men" aired its 92nd and final episode, creator Matthew Weiner sat down with writer A.M. Homes at the New York Public Library to reflect on the acclaimed AMC drama. It's the first talk he's given since the much-discussed "Person to Person," aired last Sunday. This post contains spoilers of the final episodes of Mad Men. Your eyes shouldn’t cross this line.Matthew Weiner did a very poor job of consoling the crowd during his Live From the New York Public Library talk with author A.M. Homes Wednesday night. Weiner was pretty matter-of-fact about Betty’s death, responding to the question of when he knew he was going to kill off Betty by pointing out that all of the characters are going to die eventually, and people die of cancer in the United States all of the time. (Not helpful, Matt.) Weiner sensed early on in the series that Betty Francis would eventually meet an untimely end. "Her mother had just died in the pilot, and I felt this woman wasn't going to live long," Weiner said. "We loved the idea of her realizing her purpose in life right when she ran out of time.

The series finale of Mad Men aired Sunday night, and the show's creator and showrunner Matthew Weiner joined author A.M. Homes for a postmortem of sorts as part of the Live From the Nypl series Wednesday night. Discussing that Coke ad ending was, of course, on the agenda. In fact, it was kind of hard not to think about Coke during the conversation when classic glass bottles of the soda were handed out to attendees upon entering the event. Still, there were plenty more subliminal topics discussed, such as Don Draper's connection to Richard Nixon, the root of Don's depression, and how Joan became the fierce feminist we now know and love.Spoilers ahead for the series finale of Mad Men. Due to both lack of sleep from reviewing the finale, and the sheer weight of the show being over, it's been hard for me to think about anything but "Mad Men" today. I put most of my thoughts about "Person to Person" into last night's review, and we can all continue to debate over there about the meaning of the final scene in terms of what Don did and didn't write, and what that says about his character arc after the series is over. Today, though, rather than dive into screeners of another '60s drama with Manson references ("Aquarius") or another AMC drama about a mysterious man in a suit ("Halt and Catch Fire"), I wanted to write about some odds and ends that didn't make their way into the finale review. That's all coming up just as soon as I find a way to communicate, without words, how...

A review of the "Mad Men" series finale coming up just as soon as I translate your speech into pig Latin... "I hope he's in a better place." -Meredith He's not, Meredith. He's right back where he started. Or so it seems. I mean, there's a way to interpret the conclusion of "Person to Person," and "Mad Men," in which Don Draper's voyage of self-discovery across these United States doesn't lead to him writing the most famous Coca-Cola ad of them all. In that version, one might lean on Matthew Weiner's own words about how he would never give one of his characters credit for an iconic real-life campaign(*), and one might suggest the point of the ad is to represent the world he left behind, which would try to take this genuine moment and turn it into yet another commodity. What Don has on that cliff is the real thing,...

Yet another gritty British detective drama is scoring a remake by a U.S. broadcast network, this time it's ABC developing a series adaptation of the psychological thriller "Wire in the Blood" based on Val McDermid's novels and ITV's well-regarded TV show which ran from 2002-2008.
Robson Green starred in the original as Dr. Tony Hill, an unconventional and eccentric clinical psychologist with a talent for catching serial killers and empathising with both victim and killer. He works with the police in the fictional West Yorkshire town of Bradfield to help solve cases.
The U.S. version shifts the action to New York City where someone has been killing women and a detective named Elizabeth Chase brings this new version of Tony Hill in to help. Author/TV writer A.M. Homes (The L Word") will pen the script for the remake which ABC Studios, Endemol Studios and Mandeville Films will produce.

Pen Center USA's 23rd annual Literary Awards Festival at the Beverly Hills Hotel was a dazzling mix of literary Los Angeles and Hollywood, as Joan Didion was winning the Lifetime Achievement Award. Many of the 400 or so attendees, from producer Laura Bickford to authors Bret Easton Ellis, A.M. Homes, Janet Fitch, Cari Beauchamp and Michael Tolkin, were disappointed that the diminutive and frail New York writer was not able to attend, after a recent fall. Governor Jerry Brown and Harrison Ford had been friends with Didion for some 40 years, and valued her friendship--and sophisticated dinner parties. Ford used to do carpentry for Didion and her late husband John Gregory Dunne, and worked on their Malibu house, before his acting took off. On Friday evening at New York's New Museum, "Mad Men" creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner was featured as this year's Visionary in the fifth annual installment of The Stuart Regen Visionaries Series. (The award, designed to honor leading contributors to the international cultural community, has previously honored artists like choreographer Bill T. Jones, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, chef and author Alice Waters, and artist and architect Maya Lin.) The event featured Weiner in conversation with author A.M. Homes in front of a full house at the New Museum's downstairs theater. Their exchange was friendly and informal as Homes moderated the conversation before opening it up to questions. Weiner deliberately refrained from saying anything about the upcoming seventh and final season of "Mad Men," which AMC recently announced would be split into two seven-episodes segments to premiere in 2014 and 2015. Regardless of the final episodes' airdates, he'll have completed his work.
