Promotions for Beyoncé’s upcoming Cowboy Carter album made its way onto New York City museums Wednesday night, nearly a week ahead of its highly anticipated release.
Advertisements for the album, which is set to drop March 29, were seen projected on several museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, New Museum and the Museum of Art and Design.
However, Guggenheim shared in a statement with The Hollywood Reporter that the institution “was not informed about and did not authorize this activation. However, we invite the public — including Beyoncé and her devoted fans — to visit the museum May 16–20 when we present projections by artist Jenny Holzer on the facade of our iconic building to celebrate the opening of her major exhibition.”
The promo displayed on the outside of the Guggenheim Museum featured the phrases “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album,” as well as the album’s title and release date.

Nadya Tolokonnikova, the most visible member of the artist-activist collective Pussy Riot, is now on Russia’s most wanted criminals list. The Associated Press reports that earlier today a Russian news outlet, Mediazona, found Tolokonnikova’s name on the Russian Interior Ministry’s database, which claimed Tolokonnikova faced criminal charges without specifying what those charges are.
“Oopsie, I was just added to Russia’s federal wanted list,” Tolokonnikova wrote on Instagram next to a photo of herself flipping the bird. Tolokonnikova believes the charges relate to her art.

What defines the actions of an innovator?
To Anitta, the Brazillian singer honored for her musical contributions at the WSJ Magazine 2022 Innovator Awards, it’s the freedom of “not being afraid.”
“It’s when you’re not really thinking about other people, and what they’re gonna say if you’re gonna fail or not,” Anitta told Variety on Wednesday night at the Museum of Modern Art. “When you have courage, you just do whatever you feel like doing.”
The 12th annual Innovator Awards honored industry heavyweights such as Margot Robbie, Maya Rudolph and Anitta for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields. Guests were treated with a nutritious three-course meal, an autumn-inspired cocktail menu and a WSJ Magazine tote bag that contained a 1000 Roche Bobois gift card.
Other honorees included Italian fashion designer Anthony Vaccarello, urban architect Jeanne Gang, neo-conceptual artist Jenny Holzer, former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive...

Banksy‘s Dismaland is closed for good. The dark twist on Disneyland — or an honest depiction, if you loathe the place — highlighted the works of artists Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, and others. It’s one big interactive art piece. For all of you who were lucky enough to have visited Dismaland, damn you. For those of us not fortunate enough […]

Dismaland Castle and Big Little Mermaid suffering from split-personality disorder. Dismaland: Banksy and more than 50 other artists create bemusement theme park Who gives a damn about the cheap thrills to be offered by the Star Wars-themed expansion of Disneyland when you can relish the thought-provoking wonders of Dismaland? The artist Banksy, whose 2010 documentary feature Exit Through the Gift Shop was nominated for an Academy Award, has come up with his latest revolutionary artwork: a theme park for the bemusement of the whole family! Or perhaps not quite the whole family. Banksy calls his 2.5-acre art show a “family theme park unsuitable for small children.” Another Dismaland plus. Its construction shrouded in secrecy, Dismaland opened today, Aug. 20, '15, on the sea front at Weston-super-Mare, in Somerset, southwest England. While the theme park was being built, locals believed that the work going on at the derelict Tropicana “lido” – shut down in...

It's been 20 years since fans flocked to Chicago for the first Lollapalooza music festival to catch a glimpse of Ice-t and the Violent Femmes. After struggling in the late '90s as bands lost interest in festivals, Lolla's now stronger than ever thanks to a sturdy partnership with the city's park district. If you're one of the 225,000 fans visiting Grant Park in August to hear headliners Eminem and Coldplay, you'll need a few breaks from the crowd. Here's where to take them.

Mathieu Ravier, who writes about movies and movie posters from down under at his blog A Life in Film, recently alerted me, via Twitter, to a wonderful collection, on the website of the French newspaper L’Express, of every festival poster of the last 64 years of the Cannes Film Festival. You can see the full collection here, but I wanted to pick out a few of my favorites.
First of all, I have to say that the poster for this year’s festival may be my favorite of them all. The festival has used beautiful black and white photographs of actresses before (Monica Vitti in 2009, Marlene Dietrich in 1992) but those posters have often been let down by their uninspired typography and layout. But this year’s poster, which uses a Jerry Schatzberg photograph of Faye Dunaway at her most gorgeous (a restored print of their wonderful 1970 film Puzzle of a Downfall Child...

The Bourne Identity director wants to turn his multimedia project about Guantánamo detainees into a documentary
He's better known for inadvertently reviving Bond and spawning Brangelina, but Doug Liman's latest project couldn't be more different to his big-budget actioners The Bourne Identity and Mr and Mrs Smith.
Inspired after his recent shift towards the Washington politics of Fair Game, which is released tomorrow, Liman found the promotional trail for his take on the Valerie Plame affair attracting a fresh set of voices – those of the American Civil Liberties Union (Aclu) and the Pen American Centre.
The various parties had plenty to talk about. The Aclu had been pushing for the release of thousands of classified documents detailing Us conduct in prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay. The fruits of their labour – 150,000 documents released under freedom of information law – gave an account of what went on behind closed doors.

Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, Karl Lagerfeld and Ridley Scott to be represented at Style and Subversion exhibition
If, in the 1980s, you were making tea with your Alessi kettle, checking the time on your Swatch and humming along to your new Eurythmics album you may be able to call yourself a postmodernist. But then there is another question – did you have an ironic smile on your face as you filled the shiny, expensive, piece of kit?
The definition of postmodernism is a thorny one and is not lost on the curators of the biggest style show dedicated to the movement. "We talked about it endlessly for three years," said Jane Pavitt. "There were many, many definitions that we put forward."
Pavitt and co-curator Glenn Adamson have unveiled details of the V&A's big autumn exhibition, Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990, which will encompass music, art, film, fashion and architecture. It...

The conceptual artist soups up the old teeny-bopper sneaker with her famous truisms.
Keds, for those of you who missed the early '90s, were once the hottest shoes around, worn by every Ym-reading girl in America who thought Zack Morris was just the dreamiest. Now, the company's trying to grow up a little and, on top of some low-key self-promotion (forget Mischa Barton), they've hired shoe designers straight from the halls of the Whitney Museum. First up: the conceptual artist Jenny Holzer.
Holzer is, in many ways, the perfect marketing tool. She earned her star projecting aphorisms and other text in conspicuous places: "Your oldest fears are the worst ones" running across a billboard in Times Square; "Survival: Savor Kindness Because Cruelty is Always Possible Later" etched in white marble at the Venice Guggenheim; and so on. From a branding perspective, her stuff has just the right mix of catchiness and surprise.
