2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the classic slasher Sleepaway Camp (watch it Here), and 1984 Publishing has announced that they will be celebrating with the release of the “making of” book Sleepaway Camp: Making the Movie and Reigniting the Campfire, as well as a 4-song soundtrack EP! Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, Sleepaway Camp has the following synopsis:

In a new clip from In Search of Darkness, legendary horror host Joe Bob Briggs, Fangoria Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr., and Good Bad Flicks host Cecil Trachenburg discuss the "upside-down slasher" elements of Robert Hiltzik's groundbreaking 1983 film, Sleepaway Camp.
It was a time when horror reigned supreme, when slasher icons stabbed their way through cinemas, when practical effects oozed from the pores of mind-bending creations that had to be seen on the big screen to be believed. After helping to form PopCap Games in the early 21st century, Jason Kapalka went on to found Blue Wizard Digital, which found success a couple of years ago with the isometric/top-down horror puzzler, Slayaway Camp. The name was a riff on Robert Hiltzik’s 1983 cult slasher, but then the team landed a bona fide licence in the form of Friday the 13th.
The result is pretty much a continuation of Slayaway, albeit with a little more flair in the finishing moves, and a slightly less Minecraft-y art style.
You play Jason Voorhees and you must kill all the victims on the screen. You are limited by the fact that whichever direction you move, you keep going until you hit an object or a murder victim. Finally, you must make your way to the “Final Girl”, who is marked by an “X” from the start of the round.

For years now, I’ve been hosting horror movie marathons around Halloween. It’s my favourite time of year: an extended excuse to trawl through the trash bins of ‘80s and ‘90s horror in search of legit gems. To save you the pain of suffering through dumpster fires like Chopping Mall and House 4: The Repossession, I’ve summoned a list of ten sure-fire horror party bangers. These are films which nail the venerable Venn intersection of scares, humour and murderous efficiency.
So, without further ado, and in no particular order…
Sleepaway Camp, Aka Nightmare Vacation (1983)
It’s not exactly laugh-a-minute, and in terms of gore it’s fairly tame, even for the period. But this summer camp slasher has one great trump card: uniqueness. Apart from its genuinely great twist (which passes the test of being both completely unexpected and holding up to repeated viewings), director Robert Hiltzik drenches...

Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers is actually the first movie in the Sleepaway Camp franchise that I’d ever seen. The VHS cover art lured me in as a kid by teasing possible appearances from iconic villains, with Freddy’s glove and Jason’s hockey mask poking out of a woman’s backpack. I was a bit too young to understand the concept of trademarks at that age, so you can imagine my disappointment when neither character made so much as a cameo. Since I hadn’t seen the first film and didn’t have any context for the franchise as a whole (or that twist), I just thought of the movie as low-budget trash.
As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve discovered that low-budget trash can be a lovely thing. And I think it’s important to distinguish trash from “so bad they’re good” movies like Troll 2...

Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

The Brood (1979)- Mommy knows best
David Cronenberg’s third horror film is his first truly great movie and also his first superbly acted film. The Brood’s ensemble is solid but Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar stand out as maverick doctor Hal Raglan and his disturbed patient Nola Carveth. Nola’s estranged husband Frank (played by Art Hindle) teams up with Dr. Raglan in the film’s suspenseful climax. He confronts Nola while Raglan attempts to rescue Frank’s young daughter from a group of murderous deformed children.

Special Mention: Death Proof
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino
USA, 2007
Genre: Slasher
The obvious reference points of Death Proof are such movies as Vanishing Point, Roadgames, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, and even Spielberg’s Duel – but Death Proof is influenced by more than just vehicular horror. Tarantino’s homage to the road-fury genre is really two movies in one, offering two versions of the same story about two separate groups of beautiful women who are stalked by a homicidal maniac who uses his car (his weapon of choice) to terrorize and eventually kill his victims. Death Proof can easily be viewed as two slasher films, with the second half acting as a sequel, offering new, beautiful victims for the murderous Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) to terrorize. It’s a grim stalk-and-slash picture with a blaring commentary of female empowerment. Replace the typical sharp edged blade with a car, and...

The Sleepaway Camp series has been a longtime favorite of mine, as I’ve always found Angela Baker to be one of the more fascinating villains and cinematic serial killers the genre has ever seen. When we first meet her in the original Sleepaway Camp, she’s a precocious pre-teen (portrayed by Felissa Rose) who has endured one messed up childhood. By the time we are reunited with an adult Angela (Pamela Springsteen) for the next two sequels, she’s embraced her complicated nature through the "help" of some professionals and has evolved into the perfect camp counselor.
Far more decisively comedic in tone than their predecessor, both Sleepaway Camp II and III are a ridiculous amount of fun for anyone who grew up on a steady diet of slasher movies. They do a fantastic job of fully embracing and celebrating everything great that was happening in the horror genre at that time.

Many horror fans met Felissa Rose for the first time one sinister summer at Camp Arawak back in the early 1980s. Though perhaps best known for playing Angela Baker in Robert Hiltzik’s 1983 cult classic, Sleepaway Camp, Rose has portrayed a wide variety of memorable characters in the horror genre since the turn of the century. Her latest role, a deeply religious survivor in the rural town of Elwood in the age of a zombie apocalypse, is certainly no exception.
With Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay, we caught up with Rose to discuss her intense character, working with Billy Zane and Dee Wallace, Scream Factory’s Sleepaway Camp Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, and much more.
You worked with writer/director Harrison Smith in last year’s Camp Dread. What was your experience working with him again on Zombie Killers: Elephant’s Graveyard?...

There are three kinds of sequels in this world. The sequel that continues the story of the previous installment in a series, the sequel that has fuck-all to do with the original and creates a completely new story in lieu of the absolutely workable earlier installment and sequels in name only. So I ask you where a movie like Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers fits in? Sure it continues the original story with its focal point still on Angela Baker though we now refer to her as Angela Johnson, but if you mean to tell me that Michael A. Simpson created a continuation story from the original Robert Hiltzik classic as anything more than a way to get exploitable elements on screen then you might not have seen Return to Sleepaway Camp, a true continuation of Hiltzik’s vision. When I watch Sleepaway Camp II I think of it as...

If there was one horror movie growing up that was my favorite to show friends at a slumber party, it had to be Robert Hiltzik’s cult classic shocker Sleepaway Camp, which proved that eighties slashers weren’t always a dime a dozen. Scream Factory brings this often overlooked gem home to Blu-ray with a stunning transfer and presentation that would certainly live up to Aunt Martha’s high standards.
The story of Sleepaway Camp is pretty much everything you’d expect from a slasher movie and nothing you’d ever expect, which is what makes Hiltzik’s campy and disturbing summer camp tale still one of the more memorable horror movies I’ve seen. It follows a traumatized teenager, named Angela (Felissa Rose), who witnessed her entire family gruesomely killed after a tragic boating accident. She’s been living with those haunting events for the last eight years as...

This is another Blu-ray release, that I wish existed a year prior. Last summer, we recorded a retrospective podcast series, covering the entirety of the Sleepaway Camp series, and could have really used a loaded, Uncut Blu-ray release of the first film. We made due with what was available, though, and now I can revisit Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film, with the image of the DVD still fresh in my mind for comparison. If you are interested in our retrospective look at the series in its entirety, you can check that out here. I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times, and as many problems as it has, it still manages to entertain me just as much, each new visit. I know the ending is coming, and I know what to expect, but it still has that same impact it had on me as a kid.

Truly one of my favorite horror movies of all time, Robert Hiltzik’s 1983 summer slasher Sleepaway Camp first shocked me as a young genre fan and continues to age like a fine genre wine with every passing year. The cult classic is finally coming to Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory and, to celebrate, Daily Dead recently chatted with Hiltzik about the film that defined his career.
Thanks so much for speaking with me today, Robert. Sleepaway Camp has always been one of my favorite horror movies, so I’m really excited to talk about it and the new Blu-ray.
Robert Hiltzik: Oh, thanks so much. I haven’t had a chance to see the Blu-ray yet, but I know Scream Factory does some great stuff on their titles, so I’m really happy they’re the ones putting out Sleepaway Camp.

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.
Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought...

With Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson’s All Cheerleaders Die arriving on VOD this week, I thought this would be the perfect time to celebrate some of my very favorite “mean girls” of the horror genre. And while I do love our beloved heroines as much as the next genre fan, there’s just something really fun about watching powerful women flaunt their cruelty and penchant for torturing others every now and again.
Check out my Favorite Mean Girls of Horror picks below and see if any of your favorite vengeful vixens made the list! Caution: Some of these may be a bit spoilery for the uninitiated!
Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk)- The Craft
While she may have grown up a total darling in films like Return to Oz and The Worst Witch, Fairuza Balk was the true epitome of a nineties mean girl in The Craft. Her character, Nancy Downs,...

The powers-that-be at Scream Factory have long been putting out badass artwork for their stellar classic horror flick releases, but with the upcoming Blu-ray of the Eighties slasher classic Sleepaway Camp, they may have just outdone themselves.
As per their Facebook page:
Check out the newly-designed key art for our upcoming Collector's Edition of the classic slasher film Sleepaway Camp (DVD & Blu-ray combo out 5/27). "Angela" is watching you...
This original interpretation comes to us from artist Nathan Thomas Milliner (The Burning, Day of the Dead) and is officially approved from the director of the film, Robert Hiltzik. (He was also directly involved in the creative process.)
As always, the original theatrical key art will be on the reverse side (the knife-in-the-sneaker one you all know). Production on extras has just begun and we'll have full details to report to you as to what they are in mid-March.
Pre-order links on ScreamfactoryDVD.

We all know that anything that requires you to travel to a distant region of space, pose as a filmmaker to find a new wife, relocate to a town called Castle Rock, or poke your nose into a parallel universe is tantamount to suicide. But what professions put you directly in the firing line? Are akin to having a huge red bulls-eye on your back? For the folks on this list, the term “occupational hazard” has far more ominous connotations.
We present seven of the most dangerous horror movie professions you can have (with some minor spoilers)...
Scientist – The Fly (1986)
A hallmark of science-gone-awry in the horror genre is that, for the scientist at the center of the story, it will inevitably end in blood, tears, and for Jeff Goldblum in David Cronenberg’s 1986 reimagining of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 original The Fly, monstrous transmutation and decapitation at the business end...

It's the day after Halloween, but there's still some horror news showing up today. First of all, for anyone who is a fan of the 1983 slasher film Sleepaway Camp, Shout Factory will be releasing the original uncut version of the film on Blu-Ray for the first time next spring. And hot on the heels of that announcement, Deadline has word that Jeff Katz, a former executive of 20th Century Fox and New Line, has optioned the remake rights to the film from writer/director-turned-lawyer Robert Hiltzik, producer Michele Tatosian, and actress Felissa Rose. As expected, the horror story will be updated to take place in a modern setting. Katz wants to turn the reboot into "a new film series that echoes its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite." The original horror film spawned three sequels from other filmmakers while Hiltzik held...

Acknowledging our collective thirst for blood and ’80s nostalgia, producer Jeff Katz has acquired the rights to the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp in order to reboot the summertime slasher for a whole new generation of awful teens. Deadline reports that Katz wants to “echo its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite,” while moving the story to a modern setting. So basically the same movie, but with different hair and texting. Not that anything should necessarily change about the story. Sleepaway Camp is a mercilessly bloody and brutal revenge flick that made Camp Crystal Lake look like it was for Cub Scouts. The film has spawned several direct-to-videos and one true sequel, 2008′s Return to Sleepaway Camp (also direct-to-video), so the franchise is in need of a good scrubbing. With original writer/director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michelle Tatosian and actress Felissa Rose, who...

The 1983 classic slasher film Sleepaway Camp is set to get a franchise reboot. The first film was great, and if you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you give it a go. It has a pretty great ending as far as slasher films go. Unfortunately, over the years there have been a few terrible sequels that you don't need to see.
The reboot is being developed by Fox and New Line executive Jeff Katz, and he's looking to bring the franchise to a new generation of slasher film fans. I'm personally not a big fan of the slasher horror genre as a don't really find it that scary. I like horror movies that mess with your head.
According to Deadline, Katz optioned remake rights from the original movie’s rights holders, which include writer and director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michele Tatosian, and actress Felissa Rose, who starred in the 1983 pic as Angela,...

Here we are, wasting our breath trying to talk you guys into picking new Halloween classics while Hollywood is still busy recycling the same old ones. In an era where no property or franchise is too obscure to be revived, we're now faced with the prospect of a Sleepaway Camp remake. DVD label Shout Factory took the Halloween opportunity to announce a forthcoming Blu-ray release of the 1983 slasher flick “Sleepaway Camp”, but that's not the only news on the matter; Deadline reports New Line exec Jeff Katz has optioned remake rights on the film from the three main rights holders and filmmakers--writer/director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michele Tatosian, and actress Felissa Rose. Cult classic slasher flick "Sleepaway Camp" is getting a remake (and a reboot), with an assist from its original director, star, and producer.
The 1983 horror movie centered around a serial killer that takes out kid campers at the titular summer getaway, and spawned three sequels, each more ridiculous than the last. Robert Hiltzik, who wrote and directed the original but was uninvolved with its follow-ups, was displeased with the turn the franchise took after he departed, and retained the rights to the movie, along with original producer Michele Tatosian and actress Felissa Rose, who starred in the series as Angela, a bullied teen attending the camp.
Now, Hiltzik, Tatosian, and Rose are working with former film executive Jeff Katz to give "Sleepaway Camp" new life as a rebooted franchise set in the modern day. Deadline reports that the new movies would also echo the original's "psychosexual elements."

Famed early 1980s slasher franchise "Sleepaway Camp" is getting rebooted. Producer Jeff Katz has optioned remake rights to the property and hopes to update the mythos for a modern setting.
In the original, a slightly disturbed and painfully shy young woman named Angela (Felissa Rose) is sent away to summer camp with her cousin.
Not long after her arrival, things start to go horribly wrong for anyone with sinister or less than honorable intentions.
The reboot aims to keep the psychosexual elements that made the first film such a cult favorite. How it will handle the original's famous ending should be interesting to see.
Robert Hiltzik's 1983 film film was shot on a budget of $350,000, yet pulled in an impressive $11 million. Katz, Hiltzik, Rose and Michele Tatosian are all set to produce the remake.

Friend of horror, Jeff Katz, has optioned the rights to the Sleepaway Camp series, writes Deadline.
What does he intend to do with it? Reboot it, of course. He will produce a new film with the original's writer-director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michele Tatosian and actress Felissa Rose.
Katz used to be an exec over at New Line.
During his term there, he oversaw production on Freddy vs. Jason and Snakes on a Plane. Later, Katz received story credit for the "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash" comic book.

Camp Arawak is getting ready to open its doors for another summer. In an appropriately Halloween-timed announcement, Deadline is reporting that producer Jeff Katz has optioned the rights to the cult horror classic Sleepaway Camp and is looking to reboot the franchise on the big screen. Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, the 1983 original featured a surprising twist ending that set it apart from other slasher fare of the era. The series continued with two direct sequels, which featured a slightly more comical approach with Pamela Springsteen (Bruce Springsteen's sister) in the lead. A fourth film, Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor , started production in 1992 and remained unfinished for two decades before going direct to DVD. Most recently, Hiltzik returned to the franchise...

Last weekend marked the long awaited theatrical release of You're Next, a home invasion horror flick that premiered on the festival circuit just about a full two years ago, way back in September of 2011. (Check out our review here.) Is it uncommon for such a highly praised film to take so long to enter our lives? Well, not exactly. Today we take a look back at ten other horror films that also spent a lot of time on the shelf before getting released, the majority of which ended up becoming big time fan favorites. Go figure! Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Though widely regarded as one of the best and most disturbing horror films the genre has ever seen, John McNaughton's real-life-inspired Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was made in 1986 but not released until 1990. Several factors contributed to the delay, but it was the film's extremely graphic content that was largely responsible,...

One of the things I love so much about the horror genre is just how many sub-sections there are to it. I mean, if you were so inclined or just in the mood, you could focus your movie viewing leisure time specifically to the supernatural, or to zombies, or perhaps werewolves & vampires, or monsters (oh my)! But for me, I personally like to get seasonal with my horror movies. And so with summer officially upon us, this is the time of year I break out all of my favorite (and obscure) summer slasher horror! We figured we’d give you 6 recommendations so you could get into the summer slasher spirit as well; some of which are well known, some obscure and some recent ones that just warrant another look in the off chance you missed ‘em upon their initial release. The 'Friday The 13th' films are a given,...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.
