Major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms are considering terminating some of their first look and overall deals with writers as soon as Aug. 1, more than half-a-dozen sources with knowledge of various term agreements and talks inside these companies told Variety. The deals would be torn up under contractual force majeure clauses, as SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America continue to strike.
Decision makers could begin ending these pacts as soon as next week, said insiders from both the creative community and their corporate counterparts. Many of these deals were suspended only a week into the strike in May, by producers including Amazon, HBO, Warner Bros. TV, NBCUniversal, Disney and CBS Studios. The writers strike is also rapidly approaching the 90-day mark when, historically, dealmakers have the option to kill agreements in the face of an “act of God,” the common show business interpretation for how the phrase “force majeure...

’The subject of Tackling Disruption: Industry, Platforms, Audiences’ was ideally suited to the circumstances.
Life during the coronavirus pandemic will surely see “TV shows and formats coming out of Zoom,” said Jordan McGarry, head of talent development and production at Film London, speaking during the virtual Cph:conference on March 25.
That kind of creativity is something she encourages and McGarry said she hoped filmmakers working across documentary and fiction will broaden their horizons beyond only 90-minute features destined for cinemas. “There are other opportunities for filmmakers and storytellers. The skills that our community has are so transferable. You don’t have...

YouTube is driving into the feature documentary space with a bold new film on drill music from one of the U.K.’s most celebrated documentarians.
The controversial genre represented in the Brian Hill-directed “Terms and Conditions: A U.K. Drill Story” has become inadvertently associated with violence and knife-crime in the U.K., and marks a daring step for a platform that has faced protests from groups demanding action against violent content on the site.
Luke Hyams, head of originals for Emea at YouTube, tells Variety that the platform’s new push for docs – particularly social issue-driven fare – comes from an awareness that content can disappear on YouTube, and must be provocative to stand out.
“It’s so important now in the age of social media and search and discovery that when you make something for YouTube, where content can get lost, (this film) can serve as a discussion starter.

The Outsiders, at least in the 2003-2007 Judd Winick run (and to a lesser extent the Chuck Dixon penned Batman and the Outsiders run that immediately followed), is one of my favourite ever DC titles. It is also, at least in my opinion, one the the teams that DC seems to neglect for huge periods of time – seemingly making them interchangable with the likes of the Titans and the Justice League; at least in terms of characters and rosters.
This particular version of Batman and the Outsiders apparently stems from Brian Hill’s run on Detective Comics last year and as such it feels a little like new readers, like myself, have actually missed out on a lot of back story that sets up what we’re experiencing in the first issue – especially when it comes to new...

Exclusive: Celebrity chef and Great British Menu star Antony Worrall Thompson, Boyzone star Shane Lynch and England rugby player Ben Cohen are to star in a four-part celebrity fishing format for Viacom’s Channel 5.
The British broadcaster has ordered Call Yourself a Fisherman (w/t), from Eden producer Keo Films’ Bristol division. The show sees three celebrities put themselves into one of the most dangerous jobs in Britain – being a trawlerman. The celebrities join the crew of a deep-sea trawler for 12 days off the North West coast of Scotland going in search of monkfish, cod and haddock in the Deadliest Catch-esque show.
It is produced by Keo’s Matt Cole and was ordered by C5 Commissioning Editor Adrian Padmore. The latter said that the show will mix fishing with Brexit. “For us, it’s about taking something that really matters to people in the UK and asks what’s...
