Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. It really has been a great year; unfortunately, I’ve missed some goodies, but dammit, I tried. So, without anymore ado whatsoever, here are a few (okay, a lot) of my favorite things from 2016.

Nearly 40 years after the release of the original Phantasm, the story of brothers Mike and Jody, their guitar-playing, ice cream-slinging pal Reggie, and their fight against the grave-robbing inter-dimensional shapeshifter known as The Tall Man continues in the fifth film in the Phantasm series, Phantasm: Ravager. Remarkably for a franchise with such longevity, Phantasm: Ravager utilizes much of the same cast and crew as the original film—in fact, it’s the first Phantasm movie not to be directed by series creator Don Coscarelli. But Coscarelli was still heavily involved in the production as a writer and producer, part of a close-knit group of collaborators that made the movie on a shoestring budget over the course of nearly a decade.

I was fortunate to be in the audience for the world premiere screening of Phantasm: Ravager while at Fantastic Fest a few weeks back now, and it was an experience that left me with a big goofy grin on my face once it was finished. As a fan, I thought the way David Hartman managed to tie up some loose ends for the beloved characters of the Phantasm universe was handled incredibly well, and with a lot of love.

So imagine my surprise upon leaving said screening and seeing several folks who were downright upset over how Ravager concluded, calling Reggie’s death a slap in the face of the entire franchise, negating the events of the preceding films.

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. In fact, at the age of 19, he became the youngest director ever to have a film distributed by a major studio (a statistic that's often been alleged but which I cannot independently confirm) when Universal acquired his teen drama Jim, the World's Greatest for distribution. That film, which was financed by Coscarelli's father -- who put up the money for production after having "a good year in the stock market," in Coscarelli's words -- landed the teenage filmmaker and his co-director Craig Mitchell an office on the studio's lot to finish the movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...

In 1979, Don Coscarelli was 23 years old when he made a haunting, off-beat tale of two brothers facing off against an inter-dimensional threat known as The Tall Man, who Angus Scrimm (Coscarelli’s best friend) played with psychopathic intensity. “Phantasm” became a cult phenomenon, spawning four sequels; the purported finale, “Phantasm: Ravager” (Well Go USA), opens this week. But Scrimm’s no longer around to help promote it, and Coscarelli’s left on his own to contemplate a rocky career.
Whether or not it’s truly the last, “Ravager” does mark Scrimm’s final performance. The actor died in January at the age of 89, not long after production wrapped. When “Phantasm: Ravager” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, alongside a new 4k restoration of the original film (aided by Jj Abrams’ production studio, Bad Robot), the screenings had the air of a wake.

Phantasm: Ravager is a cult sequel to a cult franchise made for a specific cult of fans. If you’ve never been sucked into Don Coscarelli’s do-it-yourself supernatural series, David Hartman’s fifth (and most likely final) tale of Tall-Man-terror will disappoint and frustrate. Obvious budgetary restrictions whittle down most scenes to “goofy” effects and minimal locations work, but this is everything true fans will be expecting. Hartman’s fivequel is a sentimental, fulfilling finale meant for fans who love watching airborne metallic orbs eviscerate victims, like a Coscarelli-approved bearhug that comforts through carnage.

We all know that Don Coscarelli created a masterpiece with Phantasm. As the sequels came and went, the dark dream world of the original film became both strengthened and weakened with films of varying quality, and Reggie (Reggie Bannister) the ice cream man became a dude that loved picking up hot chicks while fighting hooded monsters and the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm). As the years rolled by, the budgets for each successive franchise installment dwindled noticeably. A few years back, Coscarelli let loose with the news that a new Phantasm was on the horizon, to the surprise of everyone. And so, we've been granted Phantasm Ravager, the fifth film in the series, directed by David Hartman, who also shared writing duties with Coscarelli. Hartman is an...

Back in 1979, an up-and-coming filmmaker by the name of Don Coscarelli unleashed Phantasm, his terrifying and surreal exploration of fear, onto unsuspecting horror fans. Now, over 37 years later, we are about to celebrate the release of Phantasm: Ravager, the final installment of the iconic franchise that recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2016 Fantastic Fest. It’s a project that Phantasm fans have been waiting to see for a long time, and I have to say that by and large, longtime Phanatics should be absolutely pleased with how Ravager has turned out.
Co-writer/director David Hartman’s genuine passion for this franchise is engrained in every single moment of this sequel, which perfectly embodies the scrappy “can-do” attitude that has gotten the Phantasm series this far. The film is also a beautiful tribute to the legacy of the franchise’s villain, The Tall Man, portrayed by Angus Scrimm, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Phantasm: Ravager is the fifth and supposedly final film in the classic Phantasm horror franchise. Today we have a fun trailer for the movie, which comes from director David Hartman and writer Don Coscarelli, who wrote and directed the original Phantasm movie back in 1979. When talking about the film in an interview with EW, Coscarelli said:
“It’s a swan song to the series. There’s some new iterations of those brain-shucking spheres and a lot of good stuff that the fans will enjoy. It ties up a lot of the storylines and answers some questions that fans have had.”
The movie reunites Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Reggie Bannister, and the Tall Man himself Angus Scrimm, who passed away earlier this year. They all starred in the original movie in which the characters Mike, Jody, and Reggie attempt to stop the Tall Man from transforming corpses into dwarf zombies, a...

This week, I’ll be heading out to Austin, Texas, for my first-ever Fantastic Fest, and I could not be more thrilled. Every single year, the festival introduces audience members to some of the most insane and boundary-pushing genre fare from all over the world, and I’m excited to get my first real taste of it starting this Thursday.
And while the entire Fantastic Fest slate looks incredible (seriously, I wish I could have three clones with me in Austin just so I could see everything), I’ve put together a look at the 11 films I’m ridiculously excited to see. One note: there are several films playing at Fantastic Fest that I have already seen at previous fests, including The Eyes of My Mother, The Greasy Strangler, and Phantasm: Remastered, so it didn’t feel fair to include them here.

The terrifying Tall Man makes his creepy return in the trailer for long-awaited horror sequel Phantasm: Ravager...
One of horror cinema’s most unsung, yet influential franchises makes a return glistening with global devastation in Phantasm: Ravager. The trailer for the upcoming release of the belated fourth sequel of the Phantasm film franchise showcases an upgraded return for writer/director Don Coscarelli’s illusion-imbued cinematic shockfests.
The trailer for Phantasm: Ravager, the franchise’s first entry since 1998’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion, sticks to the tried and true, once again focusing on the series’ repertory ponytail-rocking protagonist in Reggie Bannister’s 'Reggie'. Apparently having spent the last 18 years wandering the Earth like Caine from Kung Fu, it seems that Reggie is ready for what is being billed as the final showdown between him and The Tall Man.

After nearly 37 years, it’s incredible that not only are fans still discussing Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm, but we’re getting ready to experience the film in a way I would have never dreamed possible: a 4K restoration spearheaded by J.J. Abrams and completed by the fine folks at Bad Robot. This new version is set to screen at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival on Monday, March 14th, and Daily Dead had the chance to sit down with Coscarelli in advance of the screening to hear about how this collaboration came about, what’s different in Phantasm: Remastered, and much more.

A well-known name among cult horror fans is that of Don Coscarelli. The mind behind acclaimed movies such as Bubba Ho-Tep and John Dies At the End, Coscarelli’s most well-known for the Phantasm series of movies, a franchise that began in 1979 with Phantasm. With the last entry in the series coming in 1998, many wondered if that was the last they had seen from it, particularly with Coscarelli himself moving away from feature filmmaking for a decade. Thus, it came as exciting news to many horror fans when Coscarelli announced that filming on the new movie had been completed. Titled Phantasm: Ravager, Coscarelli hands over the directing reins this time to David Hartman, with the two of them co-writing the screenplay. A teaser trailer for the film has now been released, and can be seen below.

Would you look at this! Filmmaker Don Coscarelli has made a fifth Phantasm movie called Phantasm V: Ravager, and he even released a teaser trailer. He's managed to keep the production of the film under warps for two years. It's really cool to see the Tall Man back.
The franchise started in 1979 under the direction of Coscarelli, he is a producer on this fifth film, but it was directed David Hartman, whobest known for animated series such as Transformers Prime and Roughnecks: Starship Troopers.
Original cast members Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and Angus Scrimm are back as is Reggie Bannister as Reggie, whose decades-long search for the sinister Tall Man leads him to the Tall Man’s home world.
In an interview with EW, Coscarelli had this to say,
“I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set. David and I go back to my film Bubba Ho-Tep.
