A SAG-AFTRA panel of Asian-American actors and broadcasters expressed hope today that the recent rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans will continue to unify their communities and the nation against centuries-old discrimination and bigotry. SAG-AFTRA national vice president Clyde Kusatsu pointed out just how much attitudes have changed since he was a young man, and how much more progress still has to be made for equity to be achieved.
You can watch the full hourlong panel discussion, co-sponsored by the Asian American Journalists Association, above.
Kusatsu, speaking on Wednesday at the union’s #StopAsianHate panel, recalled that as a young theater major at Northwestern University in the late 1960s, he was asked by a professor why he wanted to be an actor, given that there were so few roles for Asian Americans. “There weren’t many on the screen and on TV who looked like me in those days,...

Lucy Liu, Ken Jeong and Tzi Ma were among 16 Asian-American SAG-AFTRA members who appeared in a new PSA released on Tuesday denouncing anti-Asian hate crimes.
The video, featuring both actors, journalists and social media influencers, was filmed to encourage Americans to “stand against the stigma, xenophobia and harassment related to Covid-19 that Asian Americans continue to experience,” the union said. It was released during a live stream panel discussion hosted by the union focused on Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in media.

SAG-AFTRA members are speaking out about hate crimes and discrimination against Asian-Americans, many of whom have been targeted by their fellow citizens during the coronavirus pandemic. President Donald Trump, who is a member of the union, has even called the virus the “Kung Flu.”
On Tuesday, the union held a virtual panel discussion exploring these issues and also released a public service announcement calling on Americans “to stand against the stigma, xenophobia and harassment related to Covid-19 that Asian Americans continue to experience.”
“As a global community, we are experiencing a historically difficult time due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris. “Unfortunately, instead of working together to get through this crisis, a few misguided people are looking for a scapegoat. We are still seeing a shocking increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans, including shunning, racial profiling, verbal harassment and even physical assault. This is a time of high stress,...
