The creator of the critically acclaimed BBC natural history series Walking with Dinosaurs has landed a new eight-part docuseries at NBC.
The broadcast network has ordered Surviving Earth that explores the bizarre and amazing creatures and breathtaking landscapes of a vibrant lost world.
The series is a co-production between Loud Minds, the UK production company founded by Walking with Dinosaurs creator Tim Haines, and Universal Television Alternative Studio.
It marks another interesting move in the world of high-end factual programming; the U.S. broadcast networks have generally shied away from big docuseries or natural history programming, leaving the genre to the likes of Discovery Channel and PBS, or more recently streamers such as Netflix and Apple.
However, it comes after NBC ordered ten-part documentary series from the BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the division behind Planet Earth and Blue Planet. The, as-yet-untitled series, which will explore the landscapes, creatures and wilderness of North,...

NBC is exploring how life survived prehistoric catastrophes in “Surviving Earth.”
The network announced a series order Tuesday for eight episodes that will transport audiences back to the lost world of prehistoric life, allowing viewers to witness how life finds a way to survive on a planet where meteors fall, super volcanoes erupt, seas boil and the land moves.

Favstar, a startup that has been analyzing and curating tweets based on their popularity on Twitter, is calling it quits. The service will go offline on June 19, announced Favstar founder Tim Haines over the weekend. Haines blamed Twitter’s decision to change the way it shares data with outside companies for Favstar’s demise.
Twitter had announced back in December that it would change the way it is sharing data with outside companies on June 19. These changes effectively put an end to some of its existing data formats, while introducing a new developer interface.
Haines argued this weekend that the company has neglected developers. “Twitter wrote that they’ll be replacing this with another method of data access, but have not been forthcoming with the details or pricing,” he said. “Favstar can’t continue to operate in this environment of uncertainty.”

From Primeval to Merlin and Atlantis, Doctor Who's return spawned a host of Saturday teatime dramas that have since disappeared. What next?
It’s Saturday night. BBC 1 is showing Doctor Who. It does this a lot, generally speaking, and has done on and off (sometimes very off) for over fifty years. When the show returned in 2005 it brought with it the realisation that there was a huge family audience un-catered for on Saturday nights, and unfortunately Doctor Who was only on air for a quarter of the year, so it couldn’t do it all by itself.
ITV quickly realised it needed to attract that audience too, and while it had gameshows that dominated the schedules it didn’t have anything like Buck Rogers In The 25th Century or The A Team to put up against the BBC this time. And time was of the essence: new shows had...

ITV is close to commissioning two new 13-episode drama series.
Kevin Lygo's ITV Studios is currently developing adaptations of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Beowulf, reports The Sunday Telegraph.
Walking with Dinosaurs producer Tim Haines is working on Beowulf, while Jekyll and Hyde will be written by Charlie Higson.
Lygo explained that he is currently looking for co-production deals for both shows to secure international distribution.
Although shows of this genre traditionally air on Saturday evenings, it is currently unclear where Jekyll and Hyde and Beowulf would fit into ITV's schedule.
Earlier this month, ITV confirmed that its new pay channel ITV Encore will launch on June 9. The channel will be dedicated to the broadcaster's best drama output.

Thank goodness the wicked Helen did not bring about the end of mankind and civilization as we knew it. This meant the characters of ITV’s Primeval could come back for a fresh go-round. The show took a breather after the third season ended in 2009 and came back in seven and six episode arcs, making for abbreviated fourth and fifth seasons respectively and they are now available as a combined third volume in either standard DVD or, for the first time, as a Blu-ray option from BBC Video.

The Co-creator of ITV's dino-series Primeval has confirmed that there are still plans for a feature film adaptation.
Tim Haines told SFX: "Obviously movies do their own kind of thing, but Jeff Pinkner is the writer, and as far as I know he's redrafting."

In the show, prehistoric and futuristic creatures appear through rifts in time called anomalies, with a covert government team on the alert for the portals and the monsters. The movie will be independent of the TV iteration, with a brand-new cast.

Primeval Season 4 premieres on BBC America and BBC UK on January 1st. The fourth season will pick up approximately 12 months after the end of season 3. About Primeval Primeval is an action-packed, special effects-laden thriller in which the past, the present and the future collide. Stated by co-creators and executive producers Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges at the start of this series, “we passionately believe that the best special effects in the world mean little unless they are coupled to an exciting and compelling human story. Our series is as much, or more, about the people who come into contact with our creatures as it is about the beasts themselves. This is a story about all kinds of human emotions – grief, love, laughter, fear and courage.” Primeval Season 4 Synopsis: One year after the death of Johnson and the disappearance of three key Arc personnel (Danny, Connor and Abby), the ...

20th Century Fox has snapped up domestic rights and several key territories to BBC Earth's $65 million family feature "Walking With Dinosaurs 3D" reports Variety.
The film is based on the popular late 90's BBC documentary series created by Tim Haines which reached an audience of 700 million at the time. No word on what the story or narrative structure of the film would be other than it being a combination of live-action footage and CGI creatures with a family audience being squarely targeted.
Neil Nightingale and Pierre De Lespinois are co-directing from a script by John Collee ("Happy Feet"). Announced a week ago at the American Film Market, the project is now sold out worldwide with pre-sales essentially covering almost all of the film's budget. Fox is planning a tentpole release for the film in 2013.
Other films selling well at Afm this year are George Clooney's political thriller "The Ides...

ITV series Primeval is to be revived just weeks after being axed, it was announced today.
The effects-heavy dinosaur show was pulled in June as ITV bosses refocused their budgets and decided they didn't want drama shows before the 9pm watershed.
Now the programme is back after a groundbreaking deal which will see two new series being partly funded by BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial arm.
The cancellation caught viewers and the show's producers on the hop, leaving the third series ending on a cliffhanger.
However, ITV1 has struck a deal with UKTV, BBC Worldwide and production company Impossible Pictures to bring the show back in 2011. Stars Andrew Lee Potts, Hannah Spearitt, Ben Miller and Jason Flemyng will all return.

With the third and final season of Primeval out on DVD, fans are waiting for news on plans to stop the show becoming totally extinct.
Impossible Pictures, which makes the dino-drama, had sold the movie rights to Warner Bros and has also been in talks for a Us version of the series.
The show was screened in the UK on ITV1 until it was axed last month.
Impossible founder Tim Haines has clarified the reasons for its cancellation and has also explained what they have in mind for the American version.
Haines was speaking in a recent article in Broadcast Now, which has just been drawn to my attention.
He said: "There was a lot of talk when Primeval was cancelled that it must have been because it is a big show, with lots of CGI and special effects.
"That's not the case. ITV wasn't paying the whole costs anyway...

Evolutionary scientist 'Professor Nick Cutter' and his team are recruited by the British Government to investigate a series of dinosaur sightings. From a 'Gorgonopsid' rampaging through the 'Forest of Dean' to a swarm of giant spiders in the tunnels of the 'London Underground', long-extinct creatures tear through portals, emreging into human territory, while Cutter and research assistant 'Stephen Hart' struggle to find answers. Enlisting the help of zoologist 'Abby Maitland' and student palaeontologist 'Connor Temple', the four work together to uncover the secrets of the temporal anomalies. The team is abetted by government officials 'James Lester' and 'Claudia Brown' who instruct them to keep the danger secret from the public. Chicago – BBC America’s “Primeval” is a wonderful slice of B-movie thrills on the small screen, a great piece of escapism on Saturday nights that is yet another jewel in the crown of this fantastic cable network. I like the Sci-Fi Channel as much as the next guy, but their original programming pales in comparison to what BBC America has done with just “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and “Primeval”.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 The first volume of “Primeval,” now on DVD from BBC Home Video and Warner Bros. details the set-up that season three has already notoriously blown up. I’m going to tread lightly with spoilers, even though the season has already aired in the UK and any good BBC America series fan should know not to get too accustomed to even the lead actors on their favorite shows.
