Jonny Greenwood is laughing at your luxury vacation TikToks. In a recent profile in The Guardian, the Radiohead guitarist and film score composer dug into some of his current influences, his most important collaborations, and why setting images of beautiful resorts and moments of wistfulness against his “Phantom Thread” score feels kind of funny.
“That’s hilarious!” said Greenwood when told by The Guardian about a recent trend featuring his glorious “House of Woodcock” piece being used for TikTok videos and Instagram memes. “It was written without guile. It’s not supposed to be a pastiche – those soaring strings are unashamedly beautiful, and one can’t help but find the music very affecting. Although even saying this makes me feel terribly pink and stiff and English.”
That traditional perception of English stiffness is something Greenwood has worked a great deal to avoid in his work despite having incredibly formal musical training.

File this evergreen headline under “no alarms and no surprises.” After working together on There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, Junun, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza, Jonny Greenwood has confirmed he’s already started to work on the score for the next feature from Paul Thomas Anderson.
“I’m incredibly lucky that Paul indulges me and gives me so much time to experiment and compose,” Greenwood tells The Guardian. “That’s not usually the case in Hollywood, where the soundtrack writers are often very far down the food chain, and are sometimes given only a couple of days to bash out a complete score.”
This will mark the first time a Greenwood score will be heard in IMAX theaters as PTA’s currently untitled film has been set for an August 8, 2025 wide release from WB. With a cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris,...

Jonny Greenwood is making (sound)waves in the UK music scene. Just a month after The Smile released the new album Wall of Eyes, the multi-instrumentalist has announced a new project: an eight-hour organ composition titled “268 Years of Reverb.”
The sprawling, workday-length piece will be performed on May 18th by James McVinnie and Eliza McCarthy at Norwich, UK’s Octagon Chapel as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival.
In a statement, Greenwood described his inspiration:
“The organ is the lungs and voice of any building where it is installed. In an old church, air is going through the same organ pipes, in the same space, that other listeners have experienced for centuries. So, hearing church organs is a kind of time travel, the closest we have to faithfully reproducing ancient sound. In the Octagon Chapel, it’s 268 years of time: season after season spent celebrating, commiserating, praising, mourning, to the same recorded sounds.

Pj Harvey is a big Elvis Presley fan and meditates on his songs. She even created a fictional character inspired by Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.” In the same vein, she is a huge Bob Dylan fan and discussed her feelings about one of his more recent songs.
Pj Harvey said she could lose herself in Elvis Presley’s songs
During a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Harvey discussed her book-length poem Orlam. She was asked why the poem features a character named Wyman-Elvis who performs “Love Me Tender.”
“Well, I loved Elvis, as a lot of children of my era did, and I still love Elvis,” he said. “I love everything about him. I could lose myself in that voice, but not only that, the way he looked as well. He is almost a godlike figure in Orlam.“

Somewhere between “Wall of Eyes” and starting production on a $100 million, Leonardo DiCaprio-starring feature, Paul Thomas Anderson directed another video for The Smile, whose second album begins its rollout this weekend. This latest, “Friend of a Friend,” takes a smaller-scale approach, letting young children (some of whom were surely not alive when Radiohead’s last record released) discover the magnificent talents of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood.
The band, featuring Tom Skinner on drums, recorded Wall of Eyes between Oxford and Abbey Road Studios, with production and mixing by Sam Petts-Davies. It features string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra.
Check out the music video and album art below while we await further word on just whatever Anderson’s shooting with DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall.

With Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood comprising two-thirds of the Smile’s lineup, the band is unlikely to ever escape comparisons to Radiohead. There’s a certain undefinable quality to the latter group’s music that courses conspicuously through the Smile’s Wall of Eyes, but there are also some more easily identifiable similarities between the two bands.
For one, most of the eight tracks here are built around drumbeats that help to anchor ephemeral melodies. On the title track, ambient synths ebb and flow, washing over the song’s acoustic guitars in a way that’s reminiscent of Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely.” Elsewhere, the surreal electric guitar of the eight-minute “Bending Hectic” serves as a touchstone around which fever-pitched synths continually circle, similar to those on albums like Hail to the Thief.

The release of a new Radiohead album is greeted in certain circles as a kind of holy occasion, a time to drop everything else going on in your life and commence Deep Listening.
We have not witnessed such a hallowed event since 2016, when Radiohead dropped A Moon Shaped Pool, and a new album after such a wait sure would be welcome. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to see what the members of a great band can do when working outside such weighty expectations. That’s the story of the Smile,...

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

Paul Thomas Anderson is reuniting with his Radiohead cohorts.

The latest Paul Thomas Anderson film is here! Well, not exactly a film, just another music video from the master filmmaker. PTA has directed the video for the song "Wall of Eyes" from the band The Smile. He's obviously involved with The Smile, as it's a new band made up of his friends - Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood along with drummer Tom Skinner. Their new album will be launching in January, and this music video is the first one made to help promote the release. They filmed it just a few weeks ago! The credits on Yt state this was shot on location in London at the The Mildmay Club (see Google Maps) in late October. This B&w "Wall of Eyes" music video features Yorke hanging out around this bar staring at the camera and singing. There are also a number of shots that are literally eyes (or an eye) on walls.

The Pretenders are back with their new album Relentless.
Relentless, The Pretenders’ follow-up to 2020’s Hate for Sale, was produced by multiple Grammy Award-nominee David Wrench at London’s Battery Studios. Along with bandleader Chrissie Hydne, the album features performances from Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass), and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars), as well as a track featuring Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
“I enjoy seeing the various meanings and origins of a word,” Hynde said of the album’s title in a press release. “And I liked the definition: ‘showing no abatement of intensity.’ So when it came to an album title, it seemed fitting. You know…to keep doing it. I think anyone in a band is constantly questioning if they should keep going. It starts as a youthful pursuit and eventually, it makes you wonder, why am I doing this? It’s the life of the artist.

While Terrence Malick happily toils away on year five of editing his Biblical epic The Way of the Wind, he’s found a number of artistic diversions in recent years. The latest is an epic-looking interactive exhibit that finds him reuniting with his Knight of Cups, Song of Song, and Voyage of Time collaborator Cate Blanchett, while also boasting contributions from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

It goes without saying that movie music has come a mighty long way in the last 100 years or so, but the first two decades of the 21st century have nevertheless been an extraordinarily active and evolutionary stretch of time for film scores. Without discounting the bold and formative achievements of old masters like Bernard Hermann and Toru Takemitsu, it’s fair to say that the rise of independent cinema and the challenge of the digital age have provoked a true paradigm shift in how we think about musical accompaniment.
Rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi have used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell have risen to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. Indeed, some of the very best movie scores in recent memory (including the...

Pj Harvey is back with I Inside the Old Year Dying, her first album since 2016’s The Hope Six Demolition Project. Listen to the project below.
Harvey recorded I Inside the Old Year Dying at London’s Battery Studio with longtime collaborator John Parish and producer Flood. Marking her 10th studio album to date, the artist ascribed a sort of pensive feeling to the LP while citing the likes of Jonny Greenwood, Mica Levi, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and — of course — Bob Dylan as musical influences.
“I think the album is about searching, looking — the intensity of first love, and seeking meaning,” Harvey said in a statement. “Not that there has to be a message, but the feeling I get from the record is one of love — it’s tinged with sadness and loss, but it’s loving. I think that’s what makes it feel so welcoming: so open.”

Jonny Greenwood has been putting out a ton of music recently, but as it turns out, the stuff we’ve heard is only the tip of the iceberg. Just over a year after Radiohead offshoot project The Smile shared their great debut album A Light for Attracting Attention, the musician revealed in an upcoming interview with Consequence that he and his bandmates Thom Yorke and Tom Skinner are still sitting on a “big backlog of ideas.”
“The frustration of having not had access to playing in a band for a couple of years [has] just built up a big backlog of ideas,” Greenwood said, alluding to the pandemic that essentially halted every band on earth. “We’re still firing off each other, and it feels productive. So, while that’s happening, we just wanna keep moving forward, I think.”

Earlier this month, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood announced Jarak Qaribak, an upcoming collaborative album with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa. Now, the pair have shared a live performance video for the single “Ya Mughir al-Ghazala,” featuring vocals from Karrar Alsaadi.
Jarak Qaribak is billed as a celebration of “cross-border collaborations,” and you can certainly feel the intercontinental influences on “Ya Mughir al-Ghazala.” The Radioheadness comes through with Greenwood’s puttering drum machine, which anchors the track in a mellow electronic beat. His guitar then layers with Tassa’s, as an array of instruments — both Western and Middle Eastern — flesh out the transfixing tune.
“This song originates from Yemen, my father’s country of origin, and Kiri (Karrar) is from Baghdad, my mother’s hometown,” Tassa explains in a press release. “I met Kiri in Vienna and all I could think about was how much beauty, culture and humanity we miss while we are busy stressing differences,...

Pj Harvey has announced the release of a new song called “A Child’s Question, August.” It’s set for release on Wednesday, April 26th. Below, you can watch a preview of the song’s accompanying music video directed by Steve Gullick.
Harvey previously revealed her intention to release a new album this summer. Her last full-length, The Hope Six Demolition Project, came out in 2016.
Speaking to Rolling Stone last year, Harbey said she was inspired by “soundtrack writers” like Jonny Greenwood, Mica Levi, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, as well as Thom Yorke’s work with The Smile, Anna von Hausswolff’s All Thoughts Fly, and Bob Dylan’s 2020 effort Rough and Rowdy Ways.
She also said that her multi-year archival campaign — in which she reissued her previous albums and associated demos on vinyl — compelled her to “go back to demo’ing on my four-track again.”

Over the last eight years, Jonny Greenwood has spent his free time at his own farm in the Le Marche region of Italy, where he’s been harvesting and pressing olives with family and friends in order to make artisanal olive oil.
This time around, the Radiohead guitarist has produced enough to sell at his band’s W.A.S.T.E. store for £60 (or roughly $75 US) per signed litre bottle. The Greenwood Oil label was designed by Radiohead’s longtime artist Stanley Donwood. Sadly, it can only be shipped to UK addresses.
In a half-apologetic tweet, Greenwood said he was “really proud of the final product” while acknowledging that it’s the type of thing that “rock stars of a certain age seem to drift into.”
“It’s an addictive thing though, harvesting and pressing this glorious fruit, and spending more and more time with Italian friends in this beautiful country,...

Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead has yet another new project on his schedule, this time a collaboration with Israeli musician (and former Radiohead tourmate) Dudu Tassa. Those familiar with Greenwood’s work already know he has a pretty broad spectrum of influences, but with Jarak Qaribak, the musicians really want to throw listeners for a loop: “When people listen to this music, I really love to imagine them thinking…what is this?” Tassa said in a press release. “It sounds 1970s, but there are drum machines, there are guitars but they’re singing in Arabic…what’s going on?”

Female composers are shining bright at the 2023 Grammys.
Germaine Franco won best score soundtrack for visual media for composing Encanto, telling the audience she believes she’s the first woman of color to take home the honor.
That was followed by Stephanie Economou’s win for best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media — a new award at the Grammys. Economou earned the honor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok.
Franco and Economou were the solo female nominees in their categories.
Franco beat out Hans Zimmer (No Time to Die), Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog), Nicholas Britell (Succession: Season 3) and Michael Giacchino (The Batman). Economou edged out Bear McCreary (Call of Duty: Vanguard), Richard Jacques (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), Austin Wintory (Aliens: Fireteam Elite) and Christopher Tin (Old World).

We’re betting on Adele to win four awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Easy on Me,” plus Best Pop Vocal Album for “30.” But that might not be all she wins. She’s also up for Best Music Film for her Emmy-winning TV special “Adele: One Night Only.” That category isn’t in our predictions center this year, but given her track record (she hasn’t lost a single Grammy in more than a decade...
