Peaky Blinders series three opened with a lavish wedding. After the hushed-up suicide of Grace’s husband, she returned from New York with her and Tommy’s baby son (conceived during series two’s extra-marital fling) to make an honest man of Thomas Shelby - literally so. On their wedding day, Grace made Tommy promise to put an end to the criminal business and keep his new family safe. “No guns in the house,” he vowed.
Cut to Arthur, that same episode, in that same house, shooting dead a Soviet spy in the wine cellar, then burning the body in the extensive grounds of Tommy’s stately home. (This was the same Arthur,...

Former Fox News and CNN anchor Terry Keenan has died, TheWrap has confirmed. She was 53. Keenan died earlier this week of a brain hemorrhage, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. Kennan was working as a business columnist at the New York Post at the time of her death. Her colleague tweeted the sad news Friday morning. It is with much sadness that I report NYPost Business columnist Terry Keenan passed away overnight. Growing up, Saturday morning television meant cartoons and nothing but cartoons. By the 1970s, though, live-action bits crept in, starting with Christopher Glenn’s In the News interstitials on CBS along with silly things like The Banana Splits and H.R. Puffenstuff. In 1974, though, Filmation cleverly blended the two as it took the Big Red Cheese from comics to television. Shazam! debuted in the fall of 1974 with Michael Gray as Billy Batson, charged by the animated gods with their powers to fight crime in the adult body of Captain Marvel.
Last year, Warner Archive released the complete series on DVD and it is as charming as ever in its simplicity. In a mere thirty minutes, Billy and Mentor (Les Tremayne) rode the highways of California in their Rv and when danger struck, the magic lightning let Bill become the hero (Jackson Bostwick). Lots of rumors were tossed around last week regarding "Captain Marvel" and Katee Sackhoff. In an interview with Crave Online, Sackhoff had this to say about the possibility of working with Marvel Studios: "I personally have not spoken to Marvel and have no plans to do a movie in the immediate future. Of course I would love to do the role. I think that it’s in my wheelhouse and I would enjoy it. I'd be stupid to turn down a Marvel movie but as far as I know, Ms. Marvel isn't even in the next movie."
Clearly, the rumors of Sackhoff actually playing Captain Marvel were blown way out of proportion. Regardless, it's still pretty great news to hear that the "Riddick" actress not only knows who Captain Marvel is but would also love to portray her on the big screen. Speaking of Captain Marvel,...

Though it preceded the Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno TV series of The Incredible Hulk, the classic live-action Shazam!, had the same episodic formula with the young Billy Batson (Michael Gray) traveling the country with his mentor (Les Tremayne) looking for rights to wrong. When they encounter such situations, Billy Batson utters the titular exclamation and becomes the man-sized superhero Captain Marvel (Jackson Bostwick). What differentiates Shazam! from The Incredible Hulk is not just the hero, but how the formula is pursued; Shazam! resembles something closer to an after school special on morality than it does an action-heavy drama where Captain Marvel is needed for his super abilities instead of his presence as an authority figure. For nostalgia it might do the trick, but don’t expect anything close to emotional depth or story, because Shazam! has more in common with Leave it to Beaver than it does a superhero series.

Tuesday, DVD roundup day, is a fine day for taking a look at the new Summer 2011 issue of Cineaste, particularly since, among the online samplings this time around, DVD reviews outnumber all other types of articles combined.
To begin, Darragh O'Donoghue on Harun Farocki's Still Life (1997): "Five aphoristic essays on 17th-century Dutch still-life painting, of about three minutes each, bracket four documentary sequences of photographers creating modern still lifes for magazine advertisements. These two levels, though defined by opposites — stasis/motion, tell/show — are linked by visual motifs and rhymes, just as the modern products echo the subjects of the paintings. The documentary sequences have no commentary, mostly last ten to fifteen minutes, and take their cue from Farocki's earlier An Image (Ein bild, 1983). In that short, he recorded the shooting of a German Playboy centerfold spread, from the building of sets and the arrangement of props (including...

The MPAA just unleashed their latest batch of ratings earlier this week. What was surprising was just how many horror films were in the lineup. The J.J. Abrams / Steven Spielberg collaboration known as "Super 8" just came back from the MPAA with around 10 days to spare before its release. There's the high profile prequel to "The Thing". Will it be more in tune with the 1980's remake by John Carpenter or is it more on the Whiteout side of things? And then there's "Cell 213" starring Eric Belfour (Skyline). So is it possible that Super 8 got an R rating? Will The Thing feature gore in it? Find out these answers down below, after the jump.
Super 8 is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and some drug use.
Outrage is rated R for strong brutal bloody violence throughout, language, a scene of sexuality and some nudity.

The poster for the upcoming Canadian horror flick “Cell 213″ states that it’s from “acclaimed” horror director Stephen Kay, a filmmaker whose only real genre effort is the 2005 yawner “Boogeyman”. Strange, that. Have we reached that point in the genre where anyone who crafts a mediocre horror movie can consider themselves acclaimed? It would seem so. And while I am quite curious to see how the filmmaker’s latest effort “Cell 213″ plays out, I think a person should have at least a few snazzy films under their belt before they can profess to being an “acclaimed” director. I’m just saying. Enough about that. Here’s the plot: Cell 213 becomes home to Michael Gray a cocky young attorney, after a gruesome twist of circumstance lands him in the South River State Penitentiary, framed for the murder of an incarcerated client. Unnatural forces are causing prisoners to ‘off...

It made its world debut just last week at the Glasgow Film Festival, and I was hoping to see a stream of reviews after the screening, from critics in attendance; but nothing… at least nothing so far!
I guess Glasgow isn’t Cannes or Sundance, so there likely weren’t many critics rushing over Scotland to check it out. However, Glasgow isn’t small fry, and I still expected to see a few write-ups, given that it stars Idris Elba, and it was the closing night film! And I have no idea where the film will screen next. Once I know, you’ll know.
Instead, we’ll have to settle for reviews from IMDb users who attended the festival and saw the film – all 2 of them . Both are very positive and enthusiastic about the film, which is a good thing, and I included them below, so read on.
