Horror for some people is comforting like the warmth of the Universal monsters and others. Nothing wrong with that at all as I can respect the past however the other side is the horror that makes you feel uncomfortable.
The Canadian Soska Sisters have once again proven that Canadian storytellers are more than the work of David Cronenberg. In what I think is their best and most dangerous work since the overlooked American Mary (2012) you have the subversive On The Edge (2022) which is actually an exercise in sadism/masochism with loads of devilry, nudity, sex, and kink.
The film begins with a wide shot of an affluent area where politician Senator Coleman (Mackenzie Gray) is preaching on Television about outlawing pornography. Sounding of course like many of the actual people which will become more apparent at the end. Claire (Sylvia Soska dyed a fetching blonde) is making breakfast for her...

A couple weeks ago, a first look image from the psychosexual thriller On the Edge arrived online. The film had its world premiere at the FrightFest Halloween festival a few days ago, and we’ve gotten our hands on a teaser trailer, along with several more images. You can check those out at the bottom of this article. On the Edge is the latest movie from the filmmaking duo of Jen and Sylvia Soska, a.k.a. the Soska Sisters or the Twisted Twins.
The movie tells the story of “family man Peter, who gets more than he paid for when he books a 36-hour session with the sadistic Mistress Satana, who seems more intent on making him suffer for his sins.“
Aramis Sartorio plays Peter, with Jen Soska taking on the role of Mistress Satana. They are joined in the cast of On the Edge by Sylvia Soska as Claire,...

Time for a first look at a new horror. An early promo teaser trailer has debuted for an indie horror film titled On the Edge, playing this weekend at the FrightFest Halloween event in the UK for its world premiere. The film is the the sixth feature, and third original project, from Canadian filmmakers / twins Jen & Sylvia Soska, known as the Soska Sisters. It's also technically their first psychological erotic thriller. On the Edge stars Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, who also wrote, directed, and produced this. The film also stars Aramis Sartorio, Ola Dada, Andrea Jin, Brianna, and Alanna Finn-Morris, Ivan Decker, Mackenzie Gray, Sophie Buddle. Family man Peter gets more than he paid for when he books a 36-hour session with the sadistic "Mistress Satana" who seems more intent on making him suffer for his sins. Sounds freaky, for sure. And kinky. But is that all there is to the film?...

Earlier this week, news broke that filmmaking duo Jen & Sylvia Soska (American Mary, Rabid) are back with the brand new movie On the Edge, which is set to World Premiere at Frightfest Halloween. Now Bloody Disgusting is serving up the official trailer.
In the film…
“Family man Peter (Aramis Sartorio) gets more than he paid for when he books a 36-hour session with the sadistic Mistress Satana (Jen Soska) who seems more intent on making him suffer for his sins. Is it blackmail? Is it torture? Or is it the Devil come for his soul? Will Peter’s faith save him from his own personal Hell or is he already damned? A brilliant depiction of how Kink Culture can heal past trauma and be a source for shocking redemption.”
The cast also includes Sylvia Soska as Claire, Ola Dada as the desk clerk, Andrea Jin as the maid, Brianne Finn-Morris as Tori,...

Canadian horror Ditched opens with Melina, a paramedic, who wakes up in an overturned ambulance with no memory of the accident. With her are the rest of the ambulance crew, a cop who was escorting the ambulance in his car and two prisoners, one trapped in the cop car and the other strapped to a gurney in the ambulance – both of whom are prison medical transfers. It turns out though that the accident was anything but… The group quickly discover that they are the victims of an ambush and now they’re trapped in a ditch with someone or something outside just waiting to attack.

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.
In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

After their second feature, American Mary, exploded on to the horror scene, Canadians writer/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska were crowned the queens of body horror. Now, some seven years after that film debuted, the sisters return to the body horror genre, taking on a remake of Rabid, a film originally helmed by the King of body horror himself – and a fellow Canadian – David Cronenberg.
However; before you all start decrying remakes and reboots, this particular take on the sexually-charged blood-lust feeding, rabies-ravaged killer-creating story is a far cry from Cronenberg’s. In fact, apart from a nod or two (including a brilliant visual reference to Dead Ringers) to the work of the man behind the likes of The Fly, this film could be...

Rabid, the classic film from horror auteur director David Cronenberg, has been remade by filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska.
Rabid may be a campy, schlocky classic from the dawning era of the horror Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s, but the film, a breakthrough offering from director David Cronenberg – who would move on to genre masterpieces like 1981’s Scanners, 1983 cult classic Videodrome, 1983 Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone and 1986’s The Fly – maintains a fanbase, notably siblings Jen and Sylvia Soska, who have remade the movie.
Laura Vandervoort stars in the horror remake as Rose, a young woman whose mutilated looks become miraculously restored… albeit with carnivorous consequences.

With the way last week’s Legion ended, there was a feeling that this finale couldn’t live up to what we’d already seen. Thankfully, we can trust Legion to deliver where it matters, and that includes a hint of what is to come in season 2.
With Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) now restrained within David’s (Dan Stevens) head, the next big problem is the return of Division 3 and Clark (Hamish Linklater), the interrogator from the first episode. Hardly in a position of power, will he be forced to work with David to handle the danger held within his mind?
It isn’t a surprise really that David handles Division 3 so easy, but what is interesting is that we get to see some...

Legion has been good at keeping its secrets, sometimes to an annoying level. Now though as we reach the end of the first season we come to the episode that provides most of the answers, setting us up for what appears to be an explosive finale.
With David (Dan Stevens) trapped deep in his mind, Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) is upping the stakes on taking over his body. With Lenny’s true identity finally revealed, Cary (Bill Irwin) and Oliver Bird (Jemaine Clement) discuss how to defeat the new enemy while Syd (Rachel Keller) works to free the rest of the group, including David before it is too late.

Legion had a definite theme this week, and that is about holding back. Whether it is David (Dan Stevens) being held back by Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), or the bullets that are set to ruin everybody’s day.
While an episode which is set back in the mental hospital may put the fear into many fans that this would be a weak episode, there really wasn’t anything to worry about. What we see is David being put in a protective reality, just a shame it is Lenny (or as we now know her, the Devil with the Yellow Eyes) that appears to be in control. Legion has held back on giving us the truth around David (Dan Stevens) but this week it feels that we are finally close to that answer. With Cary (Bill Irwin) finally working it out, maybe the problem of Legion isn’t all just in David’s mind?
After the events of last week, now is the time for David to finally show his powers. Finally going to Division 3 to save his sister, the big question is, just who is in control and is David’s actions is own or some other sinister power?

Watching each new episode of Legion is now officially the highlight of the week. Now that we are into the third episode we understand the characters and what they represent, but what happens when we get deeper into David’s (Dan Stevens) thoughts? Prepare for some dark times and sinister characters.
With David’s sister in danger, time is running out for him to understand his powers. Pushing deeper into his psyche, it seems that some things in his mind do not welcome the invasion and are prepared to fight back.
Having already pointed out that this is a more persona type of superhero show where it focuses on the character more than any grandiose events, this episode cements that fact in stone.

Legion is finally here, and with a first episode like last week it is fair to say that episode two had a lot to live up to. Carrying on from where the other left off, it is time for us to learn more about the people who saved David, and maybe more about the man himself…
With David (Dan Stevens) now free and reunited with Syd (Rachel Keller) it looks like he is now safe. With The Eye (Mackenzie Gray) on his trail though time is short for him to find answers, and not only about him, but also Syd and his other new friends too.
It almost feels like familiar territory when David is being tested to work out his powers. If anything,...

While it may seem that Marvel, Netflix and The CW are dominating the televisual superhero landscape at the moment, it looks like Fox are about to fight back. Legion is finally here, and based on the comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, it is offering something… a little different.
David Haller (Dan Stevens) is a troubled man, stuck in a psychiatric hospital with only his friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) for company it seems he may never escape to the real world. That is until he meets Syd (Rachel Keller) who he instantly hits it off with. After an “event” at the hospital occurs, he finds himself in the outside world, with many questions as to where Syd disappeared to and just what the hell happened.

Another superhero TV show, you say? It's true: FX's new marquee series Legion is based on a character from the X-Men universe, and it does come stamped with the Marvel Studios imprimatur. But trust us when we say this is no ordinary capes-and-costumes saga. The latest brainchild of Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, this surreal side trip through Fox's mutantverse is far more reminiscent of the auteurist cinema of Stanley Kubrick or David Lynch than standard comic-book blockbuster fare. Fans expecting quippy one-liners and the usual let's-destroy-a-city-block-for-the-hell-of-it set pieces might be advised to look elsewhere.

I know what you’re thinking: Another comic-book show? From The CW’s crowded superhero stable to Netflix’s Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage trio, it seems like every other TV drama these days springs from the panels of a comic book. And yet, thankfully, there’s still room for a fresh voice in there, because FX’s Legion is not just “another comic-book show.” Visually inventive and emotionally astute, it bursts out of the gate with the most exhilarating TV pilot I’ve seen since Mr. Robot.

Man of Steel 2013 box office: $250 million milestone in North America (photo: possibly after his Man of Steel workout, Henry Cavill chats with director Zack Snyder) Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill, Man of Steel passed the $250 million milestone at the North American box office on Monday, July 1, 2013. On that day, Man of Steel added $3.04 million, for a domestic cume of $251.62 million, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. After adding another $2.78 million on Tuesday, July 2, the Superman reboot’s domestic total currently stands at $254.4 million. Not adjusted for inflation, Man of Steel is no. 28 on Box Office Mojo’s chart of the fastest movies to reach $250 million at the North American box office: 18 days. The no. 1 title is Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, with 6 days. Other movies that also took 18 days to reach $250 million — years ago, when ticket prices were lower — are Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers...

Monsters University and World War Z box office: Monsters hungry for knowledge and zombies hungry for humans bring down Man of Steel Here’s a quick rundown of this past weekend, June 21-23, 2013, at the North American box office. If studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo are on target, Pixar / Disney’s Monsters University surpassed expectations, grossing $82 million at 4,4004 locations. Approximately 30% of the gross came from 3D shows. (Image: Monsters University artwork.) Directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University features the voices of John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Billy Crystal, Nathan Fillion, Aubrey Plaza, Steve Buscemi, John Krasinski, Peter Sohn, Dave Foley, Sean Murray, Bonnie Hunt, Julia Sweeney, Sean Hayes, Alfred Molina, Tyler Labine, Bill Hader, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger. Screenplay credit for the Monsters, Inc. sequel has gone to director Scanlon, Daniel Gerson, and Robert L. Baird. Starring Brad Pitt as a man having a number of close encounters of the living-dead kind,...

World War Z weekend box office: Monsters rule, but zombies are the big surprise hit (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) World War Z, Brad Pitt, and his living-dead pals have turned out to be the big (happy) surprise at the North American box office this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. In case Friday’s estimates are on target, the $190-$200 million-budgeted World War Z should collect $57-$60 million by Sunday evening, or about $10-$15 million more than many pundits had been expecting. Yesterday, World War Z opened with $25 million — about $5 million above early estimates — from 3,607 locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That figure includes $3.6 million from Thursday evening screenings. In case there’s a Saturday surge for Marc Forster’s Paramount-distributed PG-13 zombie movie, World War Z could actually go quite a bit beyond the $60 million mark. That’s good news for the studio and for producer Brad Pitt,...

World War Z box office vs. Monsters University vs. Man of Steel (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) The North American box office will be huge this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. You’ve surely read that elsewhere, and it’s no exaggeration. The combined gross of the top three movies alone — Monsters University, World War Z, Man of Steel — should hover around $180 million. Now, what remains to be seen is if there’ll be any dollars (whether Canadian or American) left for the dozens of other movies on North American screens. It’s like having huge supermarkets making little neighborhood stores disappear from view. But hey, that seems to be exactly what the moviegoing public wants. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University will easily top the domestic box office following a Friday gross around $25-$28 million, in addition to $2.6 million from Thursday evening screenings.

Man of Steel box office to reach $150 million in North America today (photo: Dylan Sprayberry as the young Clark Kent in Man of Steel) Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill in the title role, Man of Steel will undoubtedly pass the $150 million milestone at the North American box office on Tuesday, June 19, 2013. Partly boosted by 3D surcharges, after about four and a quarter days (including $12 million from Thursday evening screenings), Warner Bros.’ $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel has taken in $141.26 million from 4,207 Us/Canada locations, including $12.58 million on Monday as per Box Office Mojo. For comparison’s sake: From Friday-Monday, without the advantage of box-office-inflating 3D surcharges, Jon Favreau / Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man earned $105.55 million, or about $117 million today. So, if the 3D surcharges* are deducted from Man of Steel‘s Friday-to-Monday total, the 2013 Superman reboot would be left with $116.34 million. In other words, the $140 million-budgeted Iron Man...

Every movie has a rumor mill, but when your main character is Superman, it naturally becomes a super rumor mill. Man of Steel weekend box office: Above estimates, but real June record remains beyond the reach of Superman 2013 reboot (image: Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel) Somewhat surprisingly — it’s usually the other way around — Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel grossed more than $3 million above studio estimates released on Sunday, June 16, 2013. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Sucker Punch), and starring Henry Cavill (The Tudors, possibly the upcoming The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), the 2013 Superman reboot scored $116.61 million from 4,207 North American locations according to weekend box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Once Thursday evening figures are added, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel‘s domestic cume reached $128.68 million by Sunday evening. Now, Man of Steel‘s adjusted $116.61 million doesn’t change the June Box-Office Record Chart in any way. The Superman reboot remains ahead of the former official June champ, the Tom Hanks-, Tim Allen-voiced Toy Story 3‘s...

Henry Cavill Superman: Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past [See previous post: "Man of Steel Trailing Original Iron Man in Ticket Sales."] As mentioned in our previous posts, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel grossed an estimated $113.08 million this past weekend, including $9 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Directed by Zack Snyder, the 2013 Superman reboot stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman. (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel.) Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer’s $270 million-budgeted Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman, debuted with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the box-office-boosting advantage of 3D surcharges, Man of Steel is obviously a much bigger hit than its immediate predecessor. Superman Returns eventually reached $200.08 million in North America, plus a slightly more modest $191 million internationally. Man of Steel will not only easily surpass Superman Returns at the domestic box office, but it’ll also earn at the very least twice as much as Superman Returns internationally.

Henry Cavill Man of Steel to trail Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man 3 [See previous post: "Man of Steel Weekend Box Office: June Record May Not Be Broken."] As long as it grosses at least $100 million by Sunday evening — and that’s a given — Zack Snyder / Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel will boast the second-biggest opening of 2013, behind only Shane Black / Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3, which collected $174.14 million in early May according to Box Office Mojo. As mentioned in the previous post, Man of Steel is expected to score anywhere between $115-$140 million. Note: Figures for both Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 include Thursday evening shows. Man of Steel vs. Superman Returns (photo: Amy Adams as Lois Lane in Man of Steel) [See previous post: "Man of Steel Box Office: June Record Likely (Sort of)."] Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer / Brandon Routh’s Superman Returns opened with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the advantage of box-office-inflating 3D surcharges, Man of Steel will clearly soar much higher. (See updated post: “Man of Steel to Trail Iron Man 3: Box Office” — and possibly to trail the original Iron Man as well.) Superman Returns cumed at $200.08 million in North America, in addition to $191 million internationally. Considering the exponential growth of the international market in the last decade, expect Man of Steel to earn much more outside of than in North America. Henry Cavill Man of Steel: Relative big-screen newcomer Cavill handicapped by Zack Snyder’s green-screen focus [See previous post: "Man of Steel Review: Superman Movie Sensory Enhanced, Heart Deprived."] Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Diane Lane (as Clark’s adoptive mother) are all Oscar-nominees and/or winners with the ability to thrive under the distracted eye of a director who only cares about lining up the next green-screen shot. Less so in the case of relative newcomer Henry Cavill. The man is an undeniably gorgeous specimen and he looks just right in the beautifully-designed Superman suit by costumers James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson. What doesn’t fit so well is Superman conforming to the Nolan-inspired, Warner Bros.-approved mold of dark, conflicted superhero that does neither Cavill nor Superman any favors. (Photo: Henry Cavill Man of Steel.) At his best, Kal-El is a combination of troubled teenager trying to find his place in the world and Christ figure charged with saving humankind.

According to VancouverFilm.Net, the character played by actor Mackenzie Gray in director Zack Snyder's BC-filmed 'Superman' movie, is not 'Lex Luthor' or 'Brainiac', but another notoriously well-known DC Comics' super-villain :
Mackenzie Gray plays the character 'Jax--Ur' a rogue scientist, minion of 'General Zod' and the first super-villain to be projected into the prison 'Phantom Zone'.
'Jax-Ur' first appeared in DC's "Adventure Comics" #289 (1961) created by Otto Binder and George Papp.
An amoral and criminally deviant scientist on planet Krypton, Jax-Ur was imprisoned in the 'Phantom Zone' for destroying 'Wegthor', an inhabited moon of Krypton, while experimenting with a nuclear warhead-equipped rocket. His sentence for mass murder was imprisonment for eternity.
Jax-Ur was often plotting against Superman with fellow Phantom Zone inmates 'General Zod' and 'Faora'.

While actor Henry Cavill worked his ass off getting into incredible shape for Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man of Steel," all superhero suits used in movies have some level of careful layering, padding and sculpting.
This is done to both showcase the already impressive physique underneath, and to protect the actor during filming of the project's rough and tumble action scenes.
Actor Mackenzie Gray, whose role in the film is 'top secret' though has been speculated to be playing Lex Luthor, has spoken with Jtm Games and revealed some details about the Superman costume:
"Amount of detail on Superman is unbelievable. Superman’s costume, is a three-layer costume; there’s a body-skin layer and then there’s a muscle layer that was molded to Henry’s muscles – it’s a silver, metallic rubber – and then over that is a mesh skin so whenever he turns into light it looks like he’s made of steel.

Can there be a Superman without Lex Luthor? That's the question on many Superman fans' minds as the June 14 release of “Man of Steel” approaches. The Zack Snyder-directed movie, which tells Superman's origin story, stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman and boasts an A-list cast including Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, and Michael Shannon as the villainous Kryptonian general, Zod. It looked like Lex Luthor's famous bald pate wouldn't make an appearance in the reboot. But now comes a rumor from AICN that the nefarious Luthor will make an appearance, after all. The fan site claims that Mackenzie Gray -- who played a Luthor clone in TV's “Smallville” -- will play “an ambitious, ego driven and cold version of Luthor.” Indeed, “Man of Steel” screenwriter David S. The stellar cast, including Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Russel Crowe, and Kevin Costner, has been revealed, and it's known that General Zod (Michael Shannon), an enemy from Superman's (Henry Cavill) home planet of Krypton, plays a role.
What about Superman's classic foe, Lex Luthor, though? The inclusion of Luthor has been a big question mark over the movie's head, with most assuming he won't appear. When asked why the character isn't in the upcoming movie by I Am Rogue, screenwriter David S. Goyer says, "I don't think anyone has ever confirmed that we haven't included him."
Naturally, that one sentence set off a flurry of speculation about the movie.
