“My grandfather’s famous quote was ‘courage is grace under pressure,’ but I think this is taking it too far,” said Mariel Hemingway when she heard that the manager of her family’s historic home, the Hemingway House in Key West, Florida, had decided to stay with the 54 cats that live on the property despite the massive approaching storm, Hurricane Irma.
The house, which now operates as a museum, was built in 1849 and completed in 1851. Hemingway moved into it in 1931, and he lived there until 1940. The house is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and Literary Landmark by the U.

For production designer Karen Murphy and composer Elliott Wheeler, “The Get Down” was a far cry from the fantastical liberties taken with “The Great Gatsby.” Fulfilling Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious vision — recreating the rise of hip-hop in the burned-out wasteland of the late ’70s South Bronx — required a special authenticity. They had to immerse themselves in the revolutionary time and place before mastering “The Get Down,” inspired by hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing legend Grandmaster Flash.
The expensive musical extravaganza (cancelled by Netflix after its first season) was a wild convergence of music, politics, and rebellion. The series not only focused on teens from the South Bronx with larger aspirations than graffiti art, who become “The Get Down Brothers,” but complicated their lives with an unrequited love story, hampered by disapproving parents.

Hawke will play a former military chaplain tortured by the loss of a son in the Armed Forces.
When the man befriends a young parishioner played by Seyfried and her radical environmentalist husband, he uncovers corruption in the Church.
”First Reformed is a script I’ve been moving toward for almost fifty years,” said Schrader, who will attend Toronto for the September 16 North American premiere of Dog Eat Dog following its world premiere in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

The company will follow up its box-office hit Marshland with the $1.9m production.
Seville-based outfit La Zanfona Producciones is set to produce a futuristic film called Shadow Inside (La Sombra Adentro) and a comedy titled Mi Cadida Cofradia, following the success of Alberto Rodriguez’s thriller Marshland, which took close to $10m in Spain last year and has sold well internationally.
Shadow Inside will be set in 2024 and tell the story of six soldiers who survive a Civil War in Spain and escape to a small village where strange things start to happen.
It will be the feature directing debut of Seville-based director David Sainz, who achieved a cult following with his web series Malviviendo and TV movie Obra 67. Sainz’s company Diffferent (sic) Entertainment will co-produce.
“We are looking to shoot Shadow Inside next year in Seville and the budget will be €1.8m [$1.9m] euros,” Gervasio Iglesias, head of La Zanfona, told ScreenDaily...

According to Latino Review's Dave Gonzalez, we might just have the name of another contender for one of the female lead roles in Rian Johnson's still-not-officially titled Star Wars: Episode VIII. He's heard that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Jupiter Ascending, Beyond The Lights, Concussion) has joined Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Olivia Cooke (Me And earl And The Dying Girl) on the shorlist - and also that it's actually two separate characters that they ladies are in the mix for, meaning two of 'em could well wind up nabbing parts in the flick. No details on the roles themselves, but apparently both are "substantial". Who emerges as the frontrunners remains to be seen. Star Wars: Episode VIII, which also stars Benicio Del Toro and the returning The Force Awakens cast, has a release date of May 26, 2017.

In his latest Star Wars column, Latino Review’s Dave Gonzalez includes two very interesting updates for Looper director Rian Johnson’s still untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII – one of which adds a new name to the shortlist of actresses that are up for the female lead role in the movie.
According to him, Belle actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw is vying for one of the leads alongside Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Golden Globe nominee Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl star Olivia Cooke. Yes, I said one of the roles – because the second update suggests that these ladies are actually all in the mix to portray two different characters.
We don’t have any details on either role, but both are said to be “substantial.” Apparently, Mbatha-Raw has definitely auditioned, but beyond that we have no idea which of these actresses are emerging as the frontrunners.

Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four is currently gunning for the title of ‘most universally hated comic book movie.’ Since it opened last Thursday, it has received the worst reviews of any Marvel film, was disavowed by its director Josh Trank, had approximately $10 million shaved off its opening box office due to Trank’s comments, and… well, that’s bad enough, right?
The biggest kick in the teeth about the flop that is Fantastic Four is down to the potential, and that’s because it had buckets of it. A studio that’s struck gold repeatedly with the X-Men and a filmmaker who hit it big with sort-of superhero movie Chronicle, the project looked fantastic on paper yet turned into cinematic crud on the screen. A large part of that is thought to be due to disharmony between Trank and the studio, who eventually wrangled control of the movie out of his hands.

Last night we found out that Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit movies) had joined the already pretty well stocked cast of Captain America: Civil War in an undisclosed role. Given the fact that he's... well, Martin Freeman, it seemed unlikely that he'd be playing some kind of established Marvel superhero, so speculation leaned towards some of the supporting human characters from the comics. Apparently you were on the right track, as in his weekly Marvel column, Latino Review's Dave Gonzalez reveals the following: "Martin Freeman plays some sort of interrogator and he will return to appear in Black Panther." Dave presents that info as fact, but also adds his own speculation. When the news broke there were a lot of guesses that he might be playing either Henry Gyrich (Government Liaison to the Avengers), or Everett Ross (a Government agent assigned to Wakanda), and Dave also reckons it'll be the latter.

It’s official: the next Tony Hawk-branded video game will, indeed, be called Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. Not only that, but it’s being developed with a keen eye on returning to what made the series popular in the first place. That means there won’t be any more motion-controlled peripherals or gimmicks, which is great news and a definite relief. That said, it has been noted that skaters will be able to shoot projectiles (for certain objectives) and use power-ups – two things that hopefully won’t ruin the gameplay.
The reveal today comes to us from Game Informer, who published a first look at Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 earlier this morning. Therein, it was confirmed that the game will be released this year on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with last-gen (PS3 and Xbox 360) versions also planned for release sometime after that.

We know Jabba the Hutt met his end at the hands (and chain) of "slave Leia" in Return of the Jedi, but he wasn't the only slimy piece of worm-ridden filth in the galaxy. Some of his fellow Hutts were glimpsed in The Phantom Menace, and have been a part of various Expanded Universe novels, animated series, comics etc over the years, and now it seems we'll be meeting them again in J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens. According to Dave Gonzalez of Latino Review, these Hutts are being practically built for the movie just like Jabba was for Rotj, and although he doesn't know how many will feature, it'll definitely be "more than one". As for how they'll factor into the story, all speculation is welcome -- though some very early concept art did depict Leia meeting with the Hutts, possibly to explain why she murdered one of 'em!

Latino Review's Dave Gonzalez has posted his weekly column, and has revealed a Lot of new details about Marvel Studios' upcoming slate of movies. Though Dave is usually on the money, until any of this is official we'll have to take it as a rumor for now -- but if even half the stuff below turns out to be true, the McU is is for one Hades of a shake up. First off, we better address that headline: According to Dave, the "deal went through" and Spider-Man will indeed be a part of Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. Rumors of Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire (seriously?) reprising the role have been put to bed too -- this will be a brand new actor. As if that wasn't a big enough announcement on its own, he also has the details on the films that lead up to that highly anticipated cinematic event.

Well, it looks like the fans may have ben right, as according to Latino Review, the character will appear! Apparently the after credits scene in this summer's Guardians of the Galaxy will feature the human rocket, Nova. And as far as Dave Gonzalez can find out (he was unable to confirm), the character will be played by Firefly's Nathan Fillion! Which rendition of the character we will see was not specified, but going by his likeness to the comic book counterpart, it would be safe to make the assumption that Fillion will be playing Richard Rider. Every year, when awards nominations are announced, the word “snub” tends to be thrown around a lot. However, I think this happens because people want every great movie to be rewarded for their work without thinking of who should be cut. Thus I get treated to Huffington Post headlines like “Oprah Movie Snubbed” and “Oprah Movie Snubbed Again” which may be click bait, but nonetheless indicate how we want everyone to be included. 2013 was a particularly crowded year for awards contenders and while Sundance and Cannes winners Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour were nominated last year, Fruitvale Station and Blue is the Warmest Color had no such luck1. So for something to be a snub for me, I have to prefer it to something else. I loved Moneyball, but did Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt really deserve nominations over Albert Brooks for Drive and Michael Fassbender for Shame?...

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

A rare copy of the first appearance of Superman, in Action Comics No. 1 --only about 100 are known to still exist -- sold for $175,000 on Monday, auctioneers ComicConnect.com announced. Minneapolis — A rare copy of the comic book featuring Superman's first appearance that went undiscovered for over 70 years in the insulation of a Minnesota house has sold for $175,000.
The high bidder for the copy of Action Comics No. 1 in the online auction was a "hard core, golden age comic book collector," Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com, said Tuesday. The buyer's name was not released. Fifty-one offers were submitted before bidding closed Monday night.
But Fishler said the buyer had been looking for a several months for a lower-grade, unrestored copy of the Man of Steel's debut, rather than a copy in better condition that could have cost well over $1 million.
Fishler estimates there are only around 100 known copies of Action Comics No. 1, which was published in 1938. He said it's prized not only for its rarity, but because Superman was the archetype of all comic book superheroes to come.

One of the most valuable comic books is the first issue of Action Comics from 1938, which features the debut of Superman. One recently sold for over $2 million, which is why David Gonzales was shocked when he found an original copy in between old newspapers that were insulating a wall of his 1938 Minnesota house that he was renovating. Gonzales had a feeling that the comic was valuable. And after some research, he confirmed that it may be worth millions. Unfortunately, his luck was short-lived. He showed the comic to his wife's aunt, who excitedly grabbed the book. When he grabbed it back, the back cover tore. Because of the damage, the comic's value quickly dropped to a 1.5 out of 10. But the comic is so rare that it still has some value. Gonzales decided to auction it off. Bidding went up as high as $127,000 as of Friday and there are still about...

Best known as the first appearance of the Krypton-born hero, Superman, the issue has already fetched a bidding price over $113,000 on the online auction site ComicConnect.
The price of the comic book tallies in at over 10 fold the amount Gonzalez paid for the house. “It’s so hard for anyone to fathom that, in this day and age, you could still discover a comic book that nobody has known about because this book was in a wall of a house for more than 70 years,” Gonzalez said to the Tribune. “It’s pretty miraculous that it even survived.”

New York, May 23: A man from Minnesota made an unexpected find when he discovered a rare copy of Action Comics #1 - first Superman comic book - inside a wall of the home that he was renovating.
Last January, David Gonzalez, 35, of Hoffman, was tearing insulation in the garage of a 10,100 dollar fixer-upper when he noticed old newspapers and comic book pages lining the wall, the New York Daily News reported.
Later, he tracked down a collectables trader in Tampa Bay, Florida, and drove there to have comic book appraised.
His grab of the "priceless" comic book from his wife's aunt's hands ended up downgrading the value.

Tonopah, Ariz. -- Acting on a tip, U.S. marshals in Arizona put an end to an Illinois couple's life on the lam, a dozen years after they fled punishment for running a Ponzi scheme that targeted friends, the elderly, and even family members, authorities said.
As fugitives, Nelson Grant Hallahan, 65, and wife Janet Hallahan, 54, lived in several states in the Southwest and had used a number of aliases, the Marshals Service said Sunday.
The two were arrested by deputy marshals Saturday afternoon in Tonopah, a desert community 50 miles west of Phoenix. Officials believe they hid in Arizona for the past couple years.
"The 12-year run from justice of the Hallahans, also known as the `Mini Madoffs,' has come to an end," U.S. Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales said in a statement. "Their investment scams involving family, friends, and the elderly, ruined many lives."

Who best to give advice on breaking into Hollywood than Robert Rodriguez who got his start selling his body to research to fund his film El Mariachi. The Sin City, Machete, and Once Upon A Time in Mexico director spoke as the keynote speaker at a recent event for Latino filmmakers and actors, and offered some words of wisdom.
The National Association of Latino Producers Association held their annual networking event at Universal City's Sheraton Hotel (L.A.) last weekend and invited industry leaders to speak to thousands of aspiring directors, writers, and actors. While technology has made it easier for filmmakers like Rodriguez to create shorts and film, Rodriguez reinforces the idea that "content is king", he told CineMovie's David Gonzales. He later added that while there are a lack of Latinos in the media, the main goal

The 11th annual Nevada City Film Festival, running Aug. 18-21, is four nights crammed full with short films, several feature-length documentaries, one dramatic feature, stand-up comedy performances and more surprises, all nestled within the rolling hills of Northern California.
The fest opens with the feature documentary Someplace With a Mountain, directed by Steve Goodall and narrated by Chevy Chase. The film tells the story of the embattled people of the Puluwat atoll who are besieged by the Pacific Ocean itself. Rising waters due to global warming are making their land slowly disappear beneath the waves.
Other feature docs include music-based films We Are Wizards, directed by Josh Koury, about the oddball phenomenon of rock bands that only craft songs about the world of Harry Potter; and Everyday Sunshine, directed by Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler, which profiles the legendary ska punk band Fishbone that continues to bring their enthusiastic music to the masses.

A Miami-area teenage couple who disappeared more than two weeks ago after their parents expressed concerns about their relationship have been found. "At this time, it doesn't appear a crime has been committed," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta of the Miami-Dade Police tells People. "It appears the girlfriend left with her boyfriend on her own free will." Jackson Powell, 18, and Nicole Dones, 17, dubbed a modern-day "Romeo and Juliet" by a police detective, vanished on April 18 two days after attending their senior prom."They've been recovered, and I just dropped them off at home 15 minutes ago," private investigator David Gonzales, hired by Dones's family,...

After previewed in some shots, Nadya Suleman's fetish video with a diaper-clad man hits the web. The video features her wearing a tight black outfit, whipping the man named Tattoo in her children's play room while she occasionally says, "Do you want it harder?!?!"
It turns out the XXX-rated home video was released by the man seen in the footage himself, Tattoo. The radio personality whose real name is David Gonzalez says the video was just a joke but he didn't put it on the Internet until he felt betrayed by Nadya and financial guru Suze Orman.
Tattoo claims he helped Nadya organize a yard sale. But when she appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" with Suze for a financial makeover, the mother of 14 did not credit him for the yard sale. "I just decided, 'Well, if Nadya doesn't remember who hooked her up, then hey,' " he says.

U.S. Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales talks to Newsweek/The Daily Beast's Eve Conant about the Arizona shooter's bizarre "paranoid" behavior in custody, concerns about copycat attacks, and the loss of his friend and colleague, U.S. District Judge John M. Roll. Plus, full coverage of the Arizona shooting.
Tucson shooter Jared Loughner is in Marshal's custody in Phoenix, U.S. Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales tells The Daily Beast's Eve Conant. (The Marshals Service is the oldest federal law-enforcement agency in the nation; its tasks include federal judicial security, fugitive investigations, witness protection, and prisoner transfers and operations.)

The Daily Beast: Have you seen Loughner, where is he now? Gonzales: We have him now. I was with him Tuesday. He doesn't say much, he just sits in his cell with a smirk on his face, nothing else.
That same smile from his mugshot?...

Already, people are pointing fingers at Sarah Palin and her "target map" for fostering the tragedy in Arizona-but Howard Kurtz says military terminology has been part of politics for ages.
I hate to say this, but the blame game is already under way.

It began within hours of Saturday's horrifying shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and nearly 20 others, even before the gunman was identified.
One of the first to be dragged into this sickening ritual of guilt by association: Sarah Palin. Last March, the former Alaska governor posted a map on her Facebook page with crosshair targets representing 20 Democratic lawmakers she was singling out for defeat after they voted for President Obama's health care plan. One of them was Giffords. Palin, who touts her caribou-hunting heritage, also tweeted, "Don't retreat, Reload!"
This kind of rhetoric is highly unfortunate.
