“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” marks composer John Paesano’s first foray into the Apes franchise. Following in the footsteps of Jerry Goldsmith (“Planet of the Apes”), Michael Giacchino (“
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”) and others, he knew he’d have big shoes to fill. The first thing he thought about was the “musical legacy as well as the “giant music” associated with the scores.
The film picks up 300 years after Caesar’s death, in a post-apocalyptic world where the Apes rule. Even though Paesano was telling a new story, he wanted to honor the music that had come before him and respect the fans, while also finding a way to take the score in a new direction while keeping everything as organic as possible. Speaking with Variety, Paesano said, “I wanted to take it to a place where the franchise is headed.”

After 2017’s masterful War of the Planet of the Apes, which completed the trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise and 2014’s Dawn and told the epic story of wise leader Caesar and the apes who created this whole new world, I really thought there was nowhere else to go with this franchise that had itself started so brilliantly in 1968 with the original starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who lands in this futuristic world dominated by intelligent apes. Many other iterations would come, even a side foray by Tim Burton, but it was that most recent trilogy that really popped. But being box office successes, 20th Century’s new owner Disney knew there was more to be mined, and they were right.

A few months back, rumors circulated about Marvel Studios working on the ‘Midnight Sons’ project, with indications that the forthcoming ‘Blade’ reboot might connect to it.
The project reportedly features characters distinct from those in The Avengers lineup, with suggestions that Doctor Strange might not join the team.
Following a string of disappointing projects, Marvel Studios has adjusted its focus somewhat. Brad Winderbaum acknowledged that not all projects in development will see the light of day, leading many to speculate that ‘Midnight Sons’ might meet this fate. However, according to MyTimeToShineHello, the project remains active, with Fede Álvarez reportedly being considered for the director’s chair.

A couple of months ago, there was talk that Marvel Studios was developing the ‘Midnight Sons’ project and that the upcoming ‘Blade’ reboot is supposed to tie into that project.
Midnight Sons would include characters that never appeared in The Avengers, and Doctor Strange allegedly would not be a part of the team.
Since then, Marvel Studios has experienced a series of bad projects, so they kind of shifted their goals a bit. Brad Winderbaum himself admitted that not all developed projects will ultimately go into production and be released, and we kind of just assumed that was the fate of ‘Midnight Sons.’
Now according to MyTimeToShineHello, the project is still on and the studio is eyeing Fede Álvarez to direct the movie.

There have been rumblings for several years now that Marvel Studios is developing a Midnight Suns movie revolving around the McU's supernatural heroes.
It may have taken a big step forward recently, however, as scooper @MyTimeToShineH is claiming that Kevin Feige is keen on filmmaker Fede Álvarez taking the helm of the project.
He's no stranger to horror after directing Evil Dead, Don't Breathe, and the upcoming Alien: Romulus. He also wrote Don't Breathe 2 and penned the story for 2022's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Given the positive buzz surrounding the next Alien movie, this rumour makes a lot of sense.
Interestingly, Werewolf by Night director and regular MCU composer Michael Giacchino is also said to be an option after his impressive work with the Marvel Studios Special Presentation.

Years after "The Sopranos" started what we consider the Peak TV era, there came a show that changed network TV forever: "Lost." It's a show that is as controversial as it is influential, one that helped bring serialization to mainstream TV, make the showrunner as recognizable among TV obsessives as the actors on screen, and delivered one of the most controversial endings in history (though it is a perfect send-off for the show).
Much like "Star Wars," it doesn't matter where you fall on the love/hate scale of "Lost," there is one thing all fans can agree on — the score remains consistently stellar throughout.
A big part of why "Lost" is still talked about so many years later is Michael Giacchino's score. There is a reason why Giacchino has played multiple concerts celebrating the music of the show since it ended in 2010, and why hundreds of people from...

Let’s travel back to 2008 when the summer hit its fever pitch of the long-awaited Christopher Nolan superhero epic, The Dark Knight. I could remember it like it was yesterday when I was a sophomore in college reading up on all the production coverage I could find and rewatching those amazing trailers, following that online campaign and viral marketing, which was way ahead of its time. My presale tickets were bought; I was amped beyond words for what I was about to witness. I think it was the longest wait in a theatre line as well, clocking in three hours before seating on opening night at my local IMAX. Because, at that time, seats weren’t reserved, and it was a battle royale trying to get that coveted middle-row seat. Picture “Running of the Bulls” in Spain, but with people trying to get that damn middle row. Boy, how far...

Dan Wallin, the music scoring engineer who recorded such classic film scores as “Spartacus,” “Bullitt,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Out of Africa,” died early Wednesday in Hawaii. He was 97.
Twice Oscar-nominated for best sound (1970’s “Woodstock” and 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), he won a 2009 Emmy for sound mixing on the Academy Awards telecast and received two additional Emmy nominations in the sound mixing category.
But it was Wallin’s skill behind the console, recording and mixing musical scores for movies and TV, that won him legions of fans among nearly all of Hollywood’s top composers and ensured steady employment for more than half a century.
He recorded the music for an estimated 500 films, including those for “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Finian’s Rainbow” in the 1960s; “The Way We Were,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Nashville,” “King Kong” and “Saturday Night Fever” in the 1970s; “Somewhere in Time,” “The Right Stuff...

Michael Giacchino's score for the hit ABC series "Lost" is the greatest musical score in television history. A few other composers have come close in the years since the show went off the air, but for my money, Giacchino's masterful score not only perfectly matched the series' stunning visuals over six seasons, but it whisked the audience through rousing, suspenseful, romantic, heartbreaking, propulsive, and mysterious scenes with the types of memorable melodies and repeated leitmotifs that seem to have fallen out of favor in blockbuster filmmaking these days.
While some of the show's music has been available on vinyl before, the full score for season 1 has only recently been made available on that format for the very first time. Varabese Sarabande is selling the score for $38.00 as a 2-lp edition in a silver foil gatefold jacket featuring notes from co-creators J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and the maestro Michael Giacchino himself.

Composer turned director Michael Giacchino is said to be in line to helm an MCU take on one of Marvel Comics’ supernatural teams, Midnight Sons.
Here’s one fresh from the rumour mill: reports are suggesting that Marvel Studios is putting a new team-up project together featuring some of its supernatural characters, based on the Midnight Sons series of comic books.
According to the report, Midnight Sons is ‘a team of supernatural superheroes that includes Blade, Morbius and at least two versions of Ghost Rider. Other members have included Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Man-Thing, Wolverine, Iron Fist, Wong and many more.’

It’s amazing how a score can impact a Hollywood composer’s career, similar to how a breakout movie can turn an actor’s fate around.
In the case of the careers of Michael Giacchino it was arguably The Incredibles which took him from being a videogame composer to blockbuster musicsmith, while for Alexandre Desplat’s, one can point to Birth which provoked Hollywood to call him nonstop.
Ludwig Göransson had a longstanding working relationship with USC bud Ryan Coogler, but it was his score for the director’s Black Panther which rocked him to a mega-tentpole stratosphere and ultimately a new working relationship with Christopher Nolan on 2020’s Tenet and last year’s Oppenheimer.
In anomaly for a composer, Göransson won an original score Oscar off his first nom for Black Panther. It wouldn’t be out of the norm to see the Swedish born composer taking the stage...

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

The newly renamed John Williams Music Building on the Sony Pictures’ Culver City lot was unveiled January 18, with Williams’ longtime collaborator Steven Spielberg sharing his admiration for the musician.
“I have grown up with Johnny from the very beginning,” Spielberg said of Williams. “What he’s done for me is something I haven’t been able to imagine. This building is where all my stress dissipates…when I finally get to this stage of a production, and I know I’m in your hands.”
Spielberg added, “In the end I don’t recognize the movies as mine but as ours. Thank you Johnny, my movies would not be the same without you.”

We’re happy to report that after five days, all of our New Years Resolutions are still intact. Except for the one about doing 20 minutes of yoga in the morning. Impossible. And the one about not eating the entire bag of potato chips in one sitting. Yeah, nah. Oh! We also didn’t stop doomscrolling, smoking or clipping our toenails at the gym. But other than that? Perfectly on track. And while there are still two long months of awards season left to endure enjoy, the New Year has brought a bountiful crop of Don’t-Miss Indies.

Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Society of the Snow is Director J.A. Bayona’s take on the story of the infamous 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Chartering a rugby team to Chile, only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
Based on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, the film utilizes Vierci’s strong ties to the remaining survivors of the crash, many of whom he knew from childhood. The filmmakers recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with all of the living survivors and the actors had access to them & their families as well.
With a reported budget of around 60-70 million, Bayona spared no expense to bring the highest level of authenticity to the project.

Plot: The true story of The Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, where a team of Rugby players crashed in the Andes, and the survivors had to endure the harsh elements, avalanches and starvation before finally being rescued thanks to their own heroic efforts.
Review: The Uruguayan Andes Crash is one of the most compelling survival stories ever told. There’s a reason it’s become a popular topic for documentarians and filmmakers, but with it dramatized so brilliantly in the film Alive, what’s the point of another version? I was wary of digging into Netflix’s lavish new movie, but the fact that it was directed by J. A. Bayona, whose film The Impossible (about the 2004 Tsunami) is pretty underrated, made me curious. I passed on seeing this at a local theatrical screening here in Montreal to watch the screener, but about 20 minutes in, I realized I had made a terrible mistake.

The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.
The Bruce Springsteen song from “She Came to Me,” Golden Globe-nominated, is also missing from Oscar’s preliminary list, as are the *Nsync reunion on a song from...

Composer Michael Giacchino didn’t intend on scoring J. A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow”, the true-life survival thriller about the 1972 plane crash with the Uruguayan rugby team. But the two were longtime friends (Giacchino scored “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), and Bayona routinely screened rough cuts of his films for him.
Yet the composer’s reaction to “Society of the Snow” (which is Spain’s international Oscar entry) was so intense that it immediately sparked conversation about percussion and guitar. The next morning, Giacchino began writing music. Bayona was so taken that he asked the Oscar winner (“Up”), who is prepping to direct a horror remake of “Them!,” to score the whole film.
Thus began the composer’s most spiritual musical journey, one that forced him to reevaluate his worldview. “‘Society of the Snow‘ challenged me in ways that I never understood I could be challenged,” Giacchino told IndieWire.

Whilst he doesn’t say much, Barry Keoghan pretty much confirms we’ll be seeing him play the Clown Prince of Crime in Matt Reeve’s follow-up to 2022’s The Batman.
Before the strikes threw everything into chaos this year, the plan for Matt Reeves follow-up to The Batman was pretty straightforward. He was writing the screenplay in the spring of this year ahead of plans to shoot in March of 2024. That would in turn lead to a 2025 release.
As of right now we have no idea if that’s still the case, after all, Matt Reeves was unable to work on the script for several months due to the writers’ strike, whilst it’s easy to imagine the chaos that scheduling studio space in 2024 could be.
Still, ETalk managed to catch up with Barry Keoghan, who had a small but memorable role in the first film as as the Joker,...

Society of the Snow tells the story of the rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972, the incident made famous in the book and 1993 movie Alive. But whereas Alive focused on the survivors, who had to resort to eating the dead crash victims to survive, J.A. Bayona’s Venice Film Festival-closing movie focuses on the ones who did not make it.

Marvel Studios is launching a new banner titled “Marvel Spotlight” to accompany the Disney+ premiere of Echo. The purpose of the new label is to let viewers know they don’t need a comprehensive knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to experience specific content. Part of the problem Marvel faces today is viewers feeling like they need to watch several movies and television shows to understand new content. While there are plenty of Easter eggs for MCU diehards, Marvel wants casual audiences to enjoy the universe, too.
Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum, recently told Marvel.com that Marvel Spotlight “gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of ‘Echo,’ focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics fans didn’t need to read ‘Avengers’ or ‘Fantastic Four’ to enjoy a ‘Ghost Rider’ Spotlight comic, our audience doesn...

Disney+’s upcoming “Echo” will officially be the first series to debut under the Marvel Spotlight banner. The new sub-category will encompass standalone shows and movies from the brand rather than shows and movies that are strictly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Spotlight banner will have a new intro-logo and will be scored by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino to distinguish it from the MCU intro. “Echo” is set to debut on both Disney+ and Hulu on Jan. 10, 2024.
“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of ‘Echo,’ focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity,” head of streaming for Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum said ahead of a screening for the series at Choctaw Casinos & Resorts in Durant, Okla., as part of the Choctaw Nation’s annual Powwow. “Just like comics fans didn’t need to...

Marvel Studios is set to launch a new banner titled “Marvel Spotlight” with the upcoming release of the limited series “Echo,” starring Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. The character made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “Hawkeye,” but knowledge of that series and the MCU at large won’t be a requirement to watch “Echo.”
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, recently told Marvel.com that Marvel Spotlight “gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of ‘Echo,’ focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Marvel Studios' shared universe model launched one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, and quickly became the envy of Hollywood. After "The Avengers" grossed $1.5 billion at the box office, every studio was racing to establish its own cinematic universe (some more successful than others). But 15 years after Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man made his big screen debut, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is groaning under the weight of its own continuity.
It's a problem that has particularly been exacerbated by the McU's expansion onto Disney+. Keen to build subscribers for its new streaming service, Disney premiered eight MCU TV shows in less than two years, a move that even CEO Bob Iger has said "diluted focus and attention" for the brand. Now, in an apparent effort to shed the feeling that each new MCU release requires an exhausting amount of homework, Marvel Studios is launching a new banner called Marvel Spotlight.

When Echo hits Disney+ on Jan. 10, 2024 it will premiere under the new Marvel Spotlight banner complete with a new intro-logo, scored by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino. Essentially, the new sub-category of Marvel is a branding for standalone fare, versus series and movies that connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The sub-category gets its name from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, which featured new characters that readers didn’t have to fully commit to over several issues.
The news was announced at a Friday-night screening of the first two episodes at The District at Choctaw Casinos & Resorts in Durant, Okla. as part of a larger Choctaw Day celebration.
Per Marvel.com, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum at the screening said, “Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on...
