With the media speculating earlier this year on the dark, final days and weeks of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, it's often easy to forget that in addition to being one of the best actors of his generation, he was a loving father too. And his children and career come up in this slightly bruising animated short from PBS. Using a conversation with Simon Critchley recorded on December 22, 2012 at the Rubin Museum of Art, producer David Gerlach and animator Patrick Smith, put together the actors' thoughts on being happy, keeping the darkness at bay and making unlikeable and repellent characters relatable. Given what would happen a couple of years later makes this much more poignant, but even so, Hoffman still spoke at the time with the authority and wisdom of someone who had been to the lowest lows. It's a lovely tribute and well worth a watch below. [EW]...

We’ve all been there. Someone passes away, and later you find an audio tape with their voice on it, or spot them in the background of a home video. For a moment, they’re with you again.
Fans of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman will always have his movies — but now a two-year old interview with the actor, who died in February at age 46, has gotten new life as an animated short.
The five-and-a-half minute video is part of the Blank On Blank series produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios. The brainchild of producer David Gerlach and animator Patrick Smith,...

Given the bullpen of entrepreneurial ventures populating its space, it seemed only fitting that the Miny Media Center by Ifp would have an inaugural demo day. At their campus in Dumbo, Brooklyn last Thursday, four of the Media Center’s “incubators” offered a ten-minute pitch before fielding questions from a panel of experts — a first from all two of the demo days I’ve attended, that proved a welcome inclusion. The central undercurrent running across the four startups’ presentations was economical storytelling, or, how to tell stories in the most effective manner possible. Jimi Hendrix died on September 18, 1970. A week before, on September 11, 1970, he gave an interview to the UK’s New Musical Express journalist Keith Altman from his suite at the Cumberland Hotel. Altman and the 27-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist who was able to do things unfathomable with the instrument discussed the latter’s wealth (he wanted more of it), songwriting process (he called it a “clash between reality and fantasy”), political sensibilities (he, at one point, was “getting ready to get into all that”), and anger release strategies (he preferred to let out all the rage on stage). Almost 44 years later, David Gerlach, Patrick Smith, and the rest of the talented team behind the PBS digital series Blank on Blank set the interview to animation. The result is an informative and entertaining six-minute-or-so look and listen into the final days of the soon-to-be legend, colored in a very appropriate hue...

The Young and the Restless tallied 23 nominations as honors were announced this morning for the 40th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Restless’ impressive take helped CBS lead all networks with 50 overall nominations. PBS and ABC followed, with 44 and 38 nods, respectively.
General Hospital, which earned 19 nominations, joined Restless in the race for Outstanding Drama Series, and Sesame Street received 17 nods, including three for Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo who faces allegations of sexual misconduct.
Good Morning America and Today will bring their ratings rivalry to the Emmys, where they’ll be joined by CBS Sunday Morning in the Outstanding Morning Program category.
