After being cancelled by Disney+ earlier this year, Nautilus has found a new home at AMC.
The Captain Nemo origin series had already finished shooting, but Disney dropped the series nonetheless as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus will air on AMC as well as AMC+ sometime next year.

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

The House of Mouse has shut its door in the face of two upcoming Disney+ series, as both Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles have removed from their upcoming slate of programming. Both series, which had already concluded filming, are now being shopped to other studios.
As reported by Deadline, the move to ax both Nautilus and The Spiderwick Chronicles comes as Disney+ is looking to cut some serious costs. As previously stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” This aligns with the studio removing such titles as Willow, Y: The Last Man and dozens of others from Disney+.

Exclusive: Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.
The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.
As part of the cost-reduction strategy, Disney’s streaming platforms, particularly flagship Disney+, have been taking a closer look on their programming with a new emphasis on content curation.
As Deadline reported exclusively Saturday, Disney+ also is not going forward with another upcoming original series, the The Spiderwick Chronicles, a U.S. live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books.

Georgia Flood and Thierry Frémont have joined Disney Plus original U.K. series “Nautilus.”
The series, inspired by Julie Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,” stars Shazad Latif (“Star Trek: Discovery”) in the lead role. Shooting is underway in Australia’s Queensland-based Village Roadshow Studios.
The series switches the viewpoint on Verne’s classic story, giving viewers the chance to see things from Captain Nemo’s point of view for the first time. Nemo is an Indian Prince who is removed from his home, family and birthright and taken prisoner by the East India Mercantile Company.
Focused only on revenge against those who have ruined his life, Nemo sets sail on the Nautilus, aided by a ragtag bunch of sailors, and soon finds himself battling not only his enemies but also discovering a mindblowing underwater world.

Stars: Jean-Luc Couchard, Mélanie Gaydos, Thierry Frémont, Zelie Rixhon, Albert Delpy, Loïc Houdré, Xavier Mussel, Adeline Walter | Written and Directed by Quarxx
Expanded from his own short (A Nearly Perfect Blue Sky), this unsettling body horror from self-monikered director Quarxx slots neatly into the New French Extremity movement, popularised by the likes of Martyrs, Frontiere(s) and Haute Tension. By turns queasy, disturbing and unexpectedly moving, it’s an accomplished and divisive debut that marks a strong calling card for its writer-director-editor.
Jean-Luc Couchard plays Simon, a 30 year old factory worker who lives in the remote French countryside with his younger sister Estelle (Melanie Gaydos), who was left severely disabled after a childhood game went horribly wrong. Haunted by guilt and fiercely protective of his sister, Simon goes to extreme lengths to protect her when social services come calling. ‘Bad Hair’ day at San Sebastian Film Festival: Venezuelan film wins Golden Shell (photo: Samuel Lange Zambrano in ‘Bad Hair’) Mariana Rondón’s Bad Hair / Pelo malo won the Golden Shell at the 2013 San Sebastian Film Festival, which wrapped up today, September 28, in northern Spain’s coastal city also known as Donostia (in Basque). The Venezuelan / Peruvian / German co-production tells the story of a nine-year-old boy (Samuel Lange Zambrano) with "bad hair," who decides to have his unruly curls molded pop-singer style (Justin Bieber’s?) for his yearbook picture. His mother (Samantha Castillo), however, is against it — the boy’s new hairdo is just not manly enough. Family conflicts ensue. The San Sebastian Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize went to newcomer Fernando Franco’s Wounded / La herida, a Spanish drama about a 30-year-old ambulance driver whose life falls to pieces as a consequence of her undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder.

The Jeanne Captive (The Silence of Joan) Teaser Trailer has premiered. Philippe Ramos‘ Jeanne Captive (The Silence of Joan) 2011 teaser trailer stars Clémence Poésy, Liam Cunningham, Mathieu Amalric, Bernard Blancan, and Christopher Craig. Jeanne Captive‘s plot synopsis: “The Silence of Joan (Jeanne Captive) takes place in 1403 with Joan a captive of a powerful French lord who sells her off to the English…Between the walls that imprison her and the stake at which she will perish, men attempt to approach this young woman who embodies the infinite.”
I have seen two Joan of Arc productions: Christian Duguay‘s Joan of Arc TV mini-series starring Leelee Sobieski and Luc Besson‘s The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc starring Milla Jovovich. I have never seen Carl Theodor Dreyer‘s The Passion of Joan of Arc.

Jeanne Captive is the latest version of the story of Jeanne D'Arc - a 15th-century teenage girl who led the French to [temporary] victory over the English at age 17.
Milla Jovovich and LeeLee Sobieski tackled the role in the 1990s in two English-language versions that are both love-or-hate-them. This time, a French version starring Clémence Poésy and directed by Philippe Ramos is set in 1403 during the time that Joan was a prisoner of a traitorous French lord who sold her to the English (who eventually burned her at the stake as a witch). Joan is portrayed as a manic-depressive who fears the loss of her "voices". Anyone who has undergone Cymbalta-withdrawal can relate, I'm sure, to what Joan goes through.
THR's review isn't extremely flattering. In fact, they call it "tedious". But then again, they barely allocated 4.5 paragraphs of digital space on their website to talk about the movie, so they...

Over the years, there have been numerous interpretations of the legend of Joan of Arc. Two of my favourites are Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc and at the other end of the scope, Luc Besson's over the top The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc which presents the young woman as a warrior (a version I enjoy though it is by far the most bombastic of the bunch).
It's been a few years since we've seen a new interpretation and this time, it's coming to us care of the French with Clémence Poésy in the lead role. The Silence of Joan (Jeanne Captive) takes place in 1403 with Joan a captive of a powerful French lord who sells her off to the English. The synopsis continues to read:

While Hollywood has been falling over itself to churn out sequels, reboots and reinventions for the last few years, France has instead been quietly but effectively producing original fare that is not only very well-written, but genuinely thought-provoking.
Notable examples of this new wave of French cinema - which arguably kicked off with Alexandre Aja's divisive Haute Tension (2003) and Gasper Noé’s Irreversible (2002) - have been Ils (2006), Martyrs (2008), Inside (2007) and Frontière(s) (2007), the latter two produced by French company Br Films, who are behind the latest Gallic chiller In Their Sleep.
Written and directed by siblings Caroline Du Potet and Eric Du Potet, their debut feature for Frontière(s) producer Rodolphe Guglielmi shares many of the signature traits of these films, effectively combining an isolated setting with characters who may not be quite what they initially appear, and the general feeling for much of their running times of 'just...
