Despite being a classic American animated sitcom, "King of the Hill" often goes unsung, its humble ambition obscuring the depth of its wit. The show produced 13 seasons of warm, funny television with a handful of familiar formulas, but it also had the guts to forgo formulas and produce outstanding episodes.
In a way, its low-key eccentricity was one of its biggest virtues. The more you knew Hank Hill (Mike Judge) and his community of family, friends, and co-workers in Arlen, Texas (which was based on a real town), the richer the show became. Seeing the guys drink Alamo beer in their neighborhood alley for the show's theme song every episode gave the show a real sense of life, where you get to know characters not just through gags but through observation.
That sense of life meant the show could be much drier than contemporaries like "Family Guy" or "The Simpsons" but just as funny.

Steve Carell’s “Space Force” series will not be back for a third season, a source close to the production confirmed to TheWrap on Friday.
Carell co-created the Netflix comedy with former “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels, who is working with Netflix on the animated comedies “Bad Crimes” and “Exploding Kittens.”
Season 2 was released on Feb. 18, but failed to crack the Nielsen streaming weekly Top 10, although there were an influx of viewers when the season first dropped: It landed at No. 8 and No. 7 in its two first weeks on the streaming originals Nielsen charts.
While Season 1 held the top spot on Netflix’s Daily Top 10 ranking, Season 2 peaked at fifth place.
The comedy starred Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Tawny Newsome, Dianna Silvers, Don Lake and Jimmy O. Yang and revolved around the titular government agency trying to find a purpose for their existence.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew Greg Daniels and Steve Carell’s comedy series Space Force for a third season.
The decision on the series, which starred John Malkovich and Ben Schwartz alongside Carell, comes two and a half months after Season 2 was released February 18. Co-created by Carell and Daniels and starring Carell, the series centers on four-star general Mark R. On Sept. 27, 1992, The Ben Stiller Show premiered on Fox, showcasing the titular star’s now well-known talent for emulating celebrities and crafting original characters. The sketch comedy series was abruptly canceled before its first season finished airing, but almost a year after it debuted, the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program.
“We had no idea,” Stiller told Et backstage at the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards. Apparently, none of the show’s writers had attended the ceremony with the notion they might beat out comedy institutions such as Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. At some point leading up to the night, Stiller thought maybe he should put together a few words, just in case. “And then at the last minute, I thought, You know, I'm not gonna prepare a speech, because I'll feel like such a jerk when I don't win.”

Netflix’s “Love” may be one of the hardest TV series titles to search on Google. But the folks behind the show still like the title.
“It’s like how I love when I see a diner and it’s just called ‘Food,'” said executive producer Judd Apatow, speaking to IndieWire with stars Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs. “No need to come up with a fancy name.”
“You can’t get angry,” Rust added. “They’re like, ‘Hey, we promised food.'”
In a similar fashion, with the title “Love,” Apatow, Rust, and co-creator Lesley Arfin have promised to depict that most complex yet most simple of human emotions on the screen. But they don’t promise a happy ending, which makes the quasi-comedy at times a nerve-wracking experience. Perhaps that’s because the show remains firmly grounded in the real world, where happy endings are rarely a guarantee.

Of all the critiques one could level at Judd Apatow, a particularly commonplace complaint is that the guy just doesn’t know when to cut. From his directorial ventures (especially Funny People and This is 40) to projects that merely bear his mark (like The Five-Year Engagement and Get Him to the Greek), Apatow joints are near-chronically overlong and digressive.
At this point, he’s no doubt aware of such criticism. And with the unveiling of Love, a 10-episode Netflix series that he both created (alongside Girls‘ Lesley Arfin and star Paul Rust) and exec-produced (with Arfin, Rust, Dean Holland, and Brent Forrester), it appears that his response to it is of the middle-finger-salute variety.

Wednesday’s line-up is continuing to be the strongest this fall as the new shows begin to find their footing. Back in the Game is a lot stronger this week, as “Play Hard or Go Home” starts to follow a more enjoyable format. The episode is much more entertaining than the first two, as it finds a way to include all of the characters. After getting off the sinking ship that is NBC’s The Office earlier than most of her co-stars and successfully getting her starring vehicle sitcom The Mindy Project picked up for a full season at Fox, actress and writer Mindy Kaling’s career is looking to be in pretty good shape. But wise moves in the TV landscape may not be the extent of her current success, as it’s now looking like a romantic comedy script Kaling co-wrote is likely to get produced as a feature as well. The film, which Kaling co-wrote with veteran TV writer Brent Forrester, is called The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, and is reportedly about a girl, who has dated nothing but losers, suddenly getting pursued by the most attractive man in the world. The reason Lizzie Gillespie is likely to soon be put into production is that it just got a big star attached to it in Anne Hathaway. Hathaway...

Blushing bride Anne Hathaway may have found her next role. The 29-year-old actress and new wife to actor Adam Shulman is attached to "The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie," a script co-written by Mindy Kaling.
Co-written by Kaling and Brent Forrester, the film follows the painfully insecure Lizzie, who isn't sure what to do when an aggressively attractive man starts pursuing her for the first time ever. News first broke about the "Lizzie Gillespie" script back in 2009, when Kaling was working with Forrester on "The Office."
Hathaway is slated to take the lead role, while THR speculates that Kaling herself will fill a supporting role. Hathaway's other upcoming releases include "Les Miserables," which is already garnering Oscar buzz, and a rumored role in "Robopocalypse."

Fresh off the blockbuster success of "The Dark Knight Rises" and a recent wedding in Big Sur, Anne Hathaway has signed to star in romantic comedy "The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie," co-written by Mindy Kaling.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film focuses on "a woman whose lack of self-worth has limited her choice in men to losers. When she is about to hit the bottom of the barrel, life takes an unexpected turn when she is pursued by the hottest guy ever."
Kaling is expected to take a supporting role, assuming she can find time in her schedule now that Fox has renewed her freshman comedy series "The Mindy Project" for a full season. Kaling collaborated with Brent Forrester, another veteran of NBC's "The Office," on the "Lizzie" script.

In an alternate universe called Hollywood, Anne Hathaway just can't seem to find a good man. Case in point: the "Dark Knight Rises" actress has signed on for a new romantic comedy entitled "The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie," in which she'll play a woman whose lack of self-confidence keeps her dating pool restricted to losers - until, that is, she's suddenly and unexpectedly pursued by a handsome young stud. Co-written by Mindy Kaling (whose "Mindy Project" was picked up for a full season by Fox on Monday) and Kaling's former "Office"-mate Brent Forrester, the film is currently in search of a...

A romantic comedy penned by noted genre enthusiast Mindy Kaling and Brent Forrester (The Office, The Ben Stiller Show) has found its special someone in Anne Hathaway. The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie is about a woman who's spent her life pursuing loserish men until, out of nowhere, she starts getting macked on by the hottest guy ever. THR writes Kaling will likely play a supporting role. We'll see, though — she's kind of a busy lady.

We doubt Anne Hathaway’s ego is suffering too much right now, given her recent marriage and the career success she’s enjoyed this year with The Dark Knight Returns, but she’s certainly happy to fake it for the screen, signing on to star in The Low Self-Esteem Of Lizzie Gillespie.Given that it features a script co-written by The Office’s Mindy Kaling and Simpsons/King Of The Hill/Office veteran Brent Forrester, we’re expecting this one to be a major tweak on typical romantic-comedy clichés.The central conceit is about a woman (Hathaway) whose total lack of self-worth has left her seemingly doomed to date total losers. She’s close to hitting the bottom of the barrel, but then she suddenly catches the eye of an incredibly hot bloke. We just hope his last name isn’t Grey...According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kaling may take...

You wouldn't know it by looking at the skin-tight Catwoman costume that she wore in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, but apparently Anne Hathaway has low self-esteem... or at least she will in the new film The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie. THR, which reported the casting, says that the script was co-written by The Office scribes Mindy Kaling and Brent Forrester is a romantic comedy who only dates losers because of her lack of faith in herself. This begins to change "when she is pursued by the hottest guy ever." The screenplay was previously featured on the Black List, which is an annual list of the most popular unproduced scripts in Hollywood. The trade says that Kaling will likely take on a supporting role in the feature, but doesn't specify character details. John Malkovich will be an executive producer on the film through his Mr. Mudd Productions banner,...

So, Mindy Kaling is having a bit of moment. The comic actress got her first big break on "The Office" where she started as a staff writer, took on the role of Kelly Kapoor, and eventually worked her way up to co-executive producer. She's published a memoir "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)," and this fall she's got a new show on Fox, "The Mindy Kaling Project" which just got picked up with a full season order. And now her talents are attracting Oscar nominees. Anne Hathaway is attached to star in "The Low Self-Esteem Of Lizzie Gillespie," co-written by Kaling and her "The Office" co-writer and producer Brent Forrester. The romantic comedy follows a woman whose low-self esteem leads her to date a bunch of losers, but her life turns around when a hot piece of man meat starts pursuing her. It's an interesting concept that...

Dan Sterling and Brent Forrester have been tapped as executive producers on NBC’s flagship comedy series The Office next season. The two are expected to fill the void left by the departure of executive producer/showrunner Paul Lieberstein, who is segueing to The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson, which the two created together. Sterling and Forrester have been drafted by The Office developer/executive producer Greg Daniels, with whom they previously worked on his animated Fox comedy King Of The Hill. Nobody has been designated showrunner on the upcoming ninth season of The Office. Daniels has been very involved, spearheading a major creative overhaul on the show, which includes changes for existing characters and the introduction of new ones. All Office cast members sans Mindy Kaling, who got her own series on Fox, will be back. Forrester has been a consulting producer on The Office since the third season.

Joss Whedon is about to have a very good week. The writer/director/producer has, until recently, been best known for his work on television: he turned his poorly-received screenwriting debut "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" into one of the most beloved cult series of all times (which itself got a long-running spin-off, "Angel"), and followed it up with the short-lived but passionately followed sci-fi Western "Firefly," a show that lasted a single season, but managed to get its own cinematic sequel, "Serenity," which marked Whedon's big-screen directorial debut.
Until now, "Serenity" has been the director's best-known entry into the movies, but that's all about to change. He wrote and produced the inspired, raucous horror flick "The Cabin In The Woods," which hits theaters on Friday, and tonight sees the world premiere of "The Avengers," the Marvel superhero team-up movie that is one of the most keenly anticipated films of the year,...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.
