Halloween is the perfect night for scary movies. Don’t let the hype dissuade you of this fact. The clocks have gone back, it’s darker earlier and enough sugar races through the average bloodstream to terrify anyone.
This year our very own Sam Inglis is running through a pre-Halloween Horrorthon and you can read his capsule reviews to get a taste of the good, the bad and the very ugly on offer.

Following two successful horror efforts for Netflix (“The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor“), Mike Flanagan is back with another miniseries: “Midnight Mass.” Released on September 24, the seven-part supernatural horror series takes place in a small, struggling town in which an enigmatic new priest, Father Paul Hill (Hamish Linklater), awakens a new religious fervor upon his arrival. Zach Gilford plays Riley Flynn, who returns to his hometown of Crockett Island after spending four years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed a young woman. “It resonates with him that he did this. He takes responsibility for it,” Gilford tells Gold Derby in our exclusive video interview (watch above).

[Editor’s Note: The piece includes spoilers for Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix limited series, “Midnight Mass.”]
In three of the last four years, horror writer and director Mike Flanagan has produced a TV limited series that fronts as a story about things that go bump in the night, while drawing true existential terror from the things unfolding in broad daylight. His latest effort, “Midnight Mass,” is no exception.
When Flanagan released his first Netflix horror project in 2018, an eponymous new adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” it told the tale of a family haunted by paranormal activity, but in reality, boiled down to the family haunting (and hurting) each other in very real, normal-normal activity. Ghosts are scary, yes, but family is scarier.
The artists’s 2020 effort, “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” was a loose adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” and told a tale of a lonely au pair...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Midnight Mass Season 1. Don’t read before finishing all 7 episodes!] By now, you should have devoured Midnight Mass, the new seven-episode thriller from Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor). That’s not only because we’re about to spill a bunch of stuff about the series, but also because it’s a damn triumph. Horrifying and heartbreaking, insightful and daringly spiritual, the long-gestated project stars Flanagan’s wife Kate Siegel as Erin Greene, one of the residents of the isolated Crockett Island, which is beset by a series of supernatural events coinciding with the sudden arrival of a new priest (Hamish Linklater), and the return of prodigal son Riley Flynn. Across the board, the ensemble is top-notch and the combination of slowly mounting dread, deeply realized characters and unthinkable evil is, well, a mass effect we can’t stop thinking about. We chatted with ...

Crockett Island is a tiny, isolated community where residents cling to their faith in God, their reliance on the commercial fishing industry or a combination of the two. This sleepy enclave is where Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series, takes place — and even before the horror shenanigans get started, there’s a lot that’s scary about the place.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. In Episode 1, we’re introduced to Crockett Island via the return of Riley Flynn (played by Friday Night Lights‘ Zach Gilford). Riley grew up there but fled as soon as possible, eventually...

Growing up Catholic, homilies tend to invoke more fear than enlightenment. Every Sunday, the repetitive, rigorously structured rhythms of Mass pivot on what the priest says during the ceremony’s one open-ended section. After the priest reads the day’s assigned passage from the Bible, he interprets the scripture however he sees fit. In theory, the homily is meant to help explain the oft-mysterious word of God — the priest, who God speaks through, finds meaning in these ancient words that reflects key lessons for the present day, bringing the clergy closer to the Lord and enriching their faith.
But a lot of priests just like to hear themselves talk. Unlike the other stages of Mass, which are pretty much set in stone, homilies provide free reign over what’s said and how long is taken to say it; they can be short, when the priest wants to emphasize his message...

An isolated island falls prey to evils both human and unholy in the genuinely scary horror drama, Midnight Mass, written and directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor). The seven-part tale opens with prodigal son Riley Flynn (Friday Night Lights alum Zach Gilford) returning to his coastal home of Crockett Island after a prison stint for causing a fatal DUI crash. At the same time, the community is visited by Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), a new priest filling in for their ailing pastor. (Credit: Eike Schroter/Netflix) As miracles — or would that be omens? — begin to occur, the locals zealously flock back to church, while Riley, his childhood friend Erin, and an ostracized sheriff (Rahul Kohli) begin to suspect they may be witnessing the unimaginable…and otherworldly. “It’s about faith versus fanaticism,” teases Siegel, who’s careful to avoid any ...

As someone who has been covering Mike Flanigan’s career for over a decade now, it’s been impressive to watch his constant progression towards becoming one of the very best visual storytellers working in the realm of horror. It all began with Absentia in 2011, which led to films like Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Before I Wake and his double dose of King adaptations with Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, and then he became one of the genre’s go-to talents for longer-form storytelling with both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
All of those credits alone would make for an impressive resume, but we’ve got new Flanagan on tap this week, and I say the following with zero hyperbole: Midnight Mass is hands down my favorite thing I’ve seen from Flanagan, and I believe that somehow, against all odds, this...

Netflix is giving viewers a deeper look at Mike Flanagan‘s Midnight Mass ahead of its September 24 premiere with a brand new trailer. The first look teases plenty of Flanagan’s hallmark horror elements as the story tracks Riley Flynn’s (Zach Gilford) return to the small isolated community known as Crockett Island. He is welcomed back with mixed reactions in the trailer, below, as he grapples with a dark event from his past. (Credit: Eike Schroter/Netflix) While the town readjusts to Riley’s presence, his return coincides with the arrival of the charismatic priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater). But there’s something seemingly insidious about the religious figure who makes way for several perplexing miracles, one of which is willing a paralyzed girl to gain full mobility during one of his services. The events reignite a religious fervor within the community begging viewers to ask the question of...

Netflix is calling all Mike Flanagan fans to “Midnight Mass” with the first teaser for “The Haunting” franchise creator’s new limited series.

“We tend to dislike mysteries. We feel uncomfortable not knowing,” Linklater’s priest Father Paul says to Gilford’s character, Riley Flynn, in the teaser, as we are shown brief glimpses of a desolate town. “The more that we know, the less we bend, the more brittle we become, the easier to break.”
Riley tells him, “That wasn’t an act of God.”
