His father, William Oren Hicks, was the Sheriff of El Paso, Texas and,
in his youth, was a professional baseball player.
Douglas was a dancer with the American Ballet Theatre and the assistant and companion of choreographer Glen Tetley for 40 years until his death in 1996, sharing his life and staging his works for numerous companies.
