The Pickle Recipe Screens Wednesday, June 7, at 1 Pm, Plaza Frontenac Cinema
The St Louis Jewish Film Festival is now in its 22nd year, and it’s to be commended for bringing so many interesting and stimulating movies to us here in the Midwest. This year has documentaries, dramas, and plenty of comedy too, of which The Pickle Recipe is perhaps the standout.
First up, in case you’re wondering about bias, I love Jon Dore. His Canadian show, a forerunner to “Inside Amy Schumer” (which he guested on), a mix of sketches, standup and interviews with interesting people, was brilliant, and since then he’s appeared in lots of movies and shows and is always hilarious. Here, he’s Joey, a musician / party organiser, who specialises in mitzvahs (both bar and bat), who seems to genuinely love his work.
But, a happy chap doing his job...

But as the comedian reveals below, she'd already been used to the way the Internet has made the comedy world a much larger, and also smaller, place; a fact used to power the documentary "Knock Knock, It's Tig Notaro." In 2013, Notaro solicited fans to invite her to their homes around the country, where she'd perform with her friend Jon Dore and whoever else might show up. The resulting film about the tour serves as a combination comedy film and buddy comedy and,...

Originally titled “Gus” for its festival appearances, “Expecting” could more accurately be named “87 Minutes with Unfunny People You Will Hate” or “An 87-Minute Commercial for Why You Shouldn’t Move to L.A.” We can’t remember the last time we liked characters less than the ones in this film. We’re generally big fans of unlikable characters; when done well, they draw us in and keep us engaged, but they have to have humor or charm or interest or...anything to make up for being horrible people. It’s also challenging to have a movie full of them without anyone or anything redeeming to serve as a counterbalance. The characters in “Expecting” aren’t just unlikable; they’re unwatchable.Radha Mitchell stars as Lizzie, a woman desperate to be a mother. She and her husband Peter (Jon Dore) have gone through several rounds of IVF unsuccessfully. When her single...

Healing
Director: Craig Monahan
Cast: Hugo Weaving, Don Hany, Xavier Samuel, Robert Taylor, Anthony Hayes, Jane Menelaus
After 16 years in prison, Viktor Khadem (Don Hany) is a man who has almost given up on life.
For his final 18 months, he is sentenced to Won Wron, a low-security, rural prison where Senior Officer Matt Perry (Hugo Weaving) has established a unique program to rehabilitate broken men by giving them the responsibility for the rehabilitation of injured raptors – beautiful, proud eagles, falcons and owls. Against all odds, Matt takes on Viktor as his number one test case, introducing him to Yasmine, the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle with a 2 metre wingspan. If these two can tame each other, anything is possible. Healing is a powerful, moving story of redemption, the discovery of hope and the healing of the spirit – in the most unlikely place, for the most unique men, through the most unusual catalyst.
Inspired by a true story, Healing is a new Australian feature film written and directed by Craig Monahan, the multi-award winning director of The Interview (selected for Montreal, Seattle, Flanders and 30 other international Festivals); and Winner of Best Film - Australian Film Institute Awards

Title: Stag Directed by: Brett Heard Starring: Donald Faison, Eva Amurri Martino, Jon Dore, Leah Renee Running time: 84 minutes, Rated R Special Features: Trailer Ken (Donald Faison) is well known for his outrageous pranks on the groom-to-be’s at their stag parties. Some of the pranks were so traumatizing, it ruined a few marriages before they had even begun. Now it’s Ken’s stag party and he’s getting a little nervous because he knows he’s due for some payback. The negative: Predictable. Jokes were forced and not very funny. I didn’t feel the pranks that were played on these grooms were so outrageous that they would ruin marriages. ABC’s newest comedy, which debuted Wednesday at 9:30/8:30c, stars Scrubs alum Sarah Chalke as Polly, a neurotic, newly single mother who rounds up daughter Natalie (Rachel Eggleston) and decamps to her childhood home in the wake of her divorce.
“I’m not a failure; I’m trendy,” she tells us via voiceover six months after begging her no-filter mother Elaine (played by Weeds‘ Elizabeth Perkins) and laid-back stepfather Max (Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Brad Garrett) to take her in.

Sarah Chalke makes her regular return to TV with "How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)" this week.
The "Scrubs" alumna completes her TV career 180 with the ABC comedy: Chalke, who played eldest Connor child Becky on "Roseanne," is now playing a TV mom.
"How To Live With Your Parents" follows Chalke's Polly, who's just recently divorced her irresponsible husband Julian (Jon Dore). Due to financial struggles, she and her five-year-old daughter Natalie (Rachel Eggleston) move in with her vulgar mom Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and uber-chill stepfather Max (Brad Garrett). But the uptight young mother's parenting ideals clash with Elaine and Max's improvisational and eccentric lifestyle. (As you've probably seen in previews, there is underwear in lunchboxes and coffee at bedtime when Natalie is under Elaine and Max's rule -- or lack thereof.)
Below, Chalke opens up to The Huffington Post about her return to TV,...

Chicago – How do so many talented comedians end up making such an awful sitcom as ABC’s “How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)”? The show is proof that the writer is still the king of television and that even a cast this notable can’t save cliched, poorly-written comedy.
Television Rating: 1.5/5.0
“How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” almost plays like a spoof of a comedy within a smarter show. It’s that cliched. And there should be a law against the number of jokes about a missing testicle as there are in the premiere. With echoes of “Meet the Fockers” and a long-gone era of situation comedy, “How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” just isn’t funny. And that’s coming from someone who has absolutely adored some of the work done...

For the last couple of years, ABC has been playing with the “throw anything at the wall and see if something sticks” theory of sitcoms. This has led to a lot of strange shows and a lot of very niche markets. While ABC has some great comedies, this approach has led to a lot of quick cancels, and some tricky situations. The Neighbors leaps to mind, as does the difficulty the network is having with Happy Endings (a hilarious show, which isn’t getting sold appropriately, and is somewhat niche itself).
Now we have a new show that’s really focused on the awkward and uncomfortable theory of comedy, and it’s one that is pretty hard to predict.

The idea of a woman giving her own baby to a friend who so desperately wants one, but can’t conceive sounds like a weighty core concept through and through, but Jessie McCormack’s “Gus” strikes a unique balance between heartfelt drama and natural comedy, and that’s what attracted talent like Michelle Monaghan to the project. Monaghan stars as Andie, Lizzie’s (Radha Mitchell) longtime friend. When Andie winds up pregnant after a one-night stand, she commits to giving her unborn child to Lizzie so she can finally start a family with her husband, Peter (Jon Dore). Trouble is, before that can happen, Andie needs help getting through the pregnancy so moves into [ Read More ]

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Sarah Chalke and Judy Reyes were for a long time the first ladies of the Zach Braff starring medical comedy, Scrubs as Elliot and Carla. Now Chalke has found her way back into the halls of a busy hospital. This time she’ll appear at Seattle Grace for ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. The big question is this one: Will she be wearing scrubs again?
The answer is: It’s possible. Grey’s will welcome Chalke as a guest star sometime this spring, as we learned from TV Line. Details about her character, however are severely lacking. Perhaps we’ll learn more soon. Either way, seeing this actress pop up on a new series is always very charming.
Chalke’s stint on How I Met Your Mother in the role of Stella was quite memorable. More recently she enjoyed a four-episode run on Cougar Town as Angie LeClaire. You will...

One of our "One Tree Hill" faves has landed another comedy guest spot. Danneel Ackles, who played mean-girl-with-a-heart-of-gold (as in gold digger) Rachel on the long-running CW series is set to appear on ABC's upcoming midseason comedy "How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)."
The series follows Sarah Chalke's character, single working mom Polly, as she's forced to move back home with her parents after her divorce. It's further complicated by the fact that her parents (played by Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett) are extremely eccentric, free-love, sexually liberated types... and Polly is determined to raise her daughter in a more structured way.
Ackles plays Olivia, who Polly befriends and decides to set up with Julian (Jon Dore)... Polly's ex-husband. Awkward! In the first episode, Julian is described as an "unemployed gambler with a pasty-white beer belly" -- so he's not exactly a catch.

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third one announced. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
An odd year for the once mighty juggernaut which can still pack 'em in. It had surprise success stories with "Once Upon a Time" and "Revenge", the latter becoming an unexpected international hit, and several shows have gotten renewals despite more modest numbers. Still, with it battling with NBC for the third and fourth position overall, the network has to introduce ten shows over the course of the season in the hope of getting a few stickers.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen include the fashion label dynasty soap "Americana", ABC's update of the 90's "Beauty and the Beast" TV series, the Roland Emmerich-produced thriller "Dark Horse", the...

After Mad Love was cancelled after a short-lived season, following Chalke’s leading role in Scrubs, we heard earlier this year that she’d signed on for a new comedy which has just had its first trailer debut.
Julie Anne Robinson (Weeds, One for the Money) is directing the pilot, from a script by Claudia Lonow (Accidentally on Purpose), with Elizabeth Perkins, Brad Garrett, and Orlando Jones, and Rachel Eggleston playing Chalke’s young daughter.
“Polly (Sarah Chalke) is a single mom who’s been divorced for almost a year. The transition wasn’t easy for her, especially in this economy. So, like a lot of young people living in this new reality, she and her daughter, Natalie (Rachel Eggleston...

How to Live With Your Parents: First Look at ABC's New Sarah Chalke Comedy
Scrubs star Sarah Chalke is returning to TV this coming season in How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).
Chalke plays Polly, a single mom of young daughter Natalie (Rachel Eggleston), who has been divorced for nearly a year. But the dissolution of her marriage in this economy forced her to make a terrible choice that no kid really wants to make: she moved back home with her parents, eccentric couple Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and Max (Brad Garrett).
Of course, uptight, vanilla Polly clashes with her laid-back, sexually adventurous parents. Can this household come together to raise young Natalie? Fortunately, Polly has another support system in her best friend Gregg (Orlando Jones), her loveable yet irresponsible ex-husband Julian (Jon Dore) and her cool and fun assistant Jenn (Rebecca Delgado Smith).

Single mom Polly (Sarah Chalke) needs a fresh start, and so she seeks help from her mom and dad. Whoops.
Chalke ("Scrubs," "Mad Love") plays a woman determined to be the "best single working mom in the universe" in "How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)," which easily takes this season's crown for longest show title. She looks to her folks (Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett) for support and a place to live, but mom and dad are pretty happy with their empty-nest life, and they don't see much upside into changing their ways for Polly and her daughter, Natalie (Rachel Eggleston).
Chalke is an expert at playing tightly wound characters, and Perkins is working some of the same self-centered vibe she did on "Weeds" (though without the nasty streak). Garrett, meanwhile, gets to work his deadpan in a single-camera comedy instead of playing to...

ABC is shaking things up for its 2012-2013 schedule.
"Revenge" is heading over to Sunday nights at 9 p.m. Et, the slot the now dead "Desperate Housewives" occupied up until last week. Old standby "Grey's Anatomy" is staying put, as is "Scandal," but they're paired with newcomer "Last Resort."
In a press conference call right after the schedule announcement, ABC Entertainment President nm2712251 autoPaul Lee[/link] said he's not concerned about launching a big action show at 8 p.m. -- especially not "Last Resort," from "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan.
"I have so much faith in Shawn. You get a sense in this job of the showrunners who really know how to drive the train. Don't forget -- we've opened strong action shows at that hour, and certainly there's an audience for it. We believe strongly in the strength of this show. We think it's a big, broad tent show, we believe in it,...

Exclusive: Collette Wolfe (Young Adult) has landed the female lead in NBC’s comedy pilot Next Caller Please. The Lionsgate/Universal TV project, written by Stephen Falk, centers on Colorado public radio personality Stella Hoobler (Wolfe), who is thrilled when she’s recruited to co-host a radio show for Orbit Satellite Radio in New York City until she meets her co-host, Cam Doherty, an abrasive, hard-drinking, sexist loose cannon. Wolfe is with Gersh and Untitled. Jon Dore has been cast in Claudia Lonow’s ABC comedy pilot How to Live With Your Parents For The Rest Of Your Life. The multi-camera/hybrid comedy, from 20th TV and Imagine, centers on Polly (Sarah Chalke), a recently divorced single mom, who moves in with her eccentric parents, Elaine and Max, a couple who’s full of life but knows no boundaries. Dore, repped by Gersh and Diamondfield, will play Polly’s “Big Lebowski-esque” ex-husband.

The team over at Conan made the mistake (cue sly wink) of booking two comedians - Jon Dore and Rory Scovel - to perform their stand-up routines on the same night. How awkward yet opportune! How embarrassing yet rife with comedic possibilities! The result was a fun look at the nature of the genre itself, complete with a joke about butt warts.

The new USA series "Necessary Roughness" premieres tonight and all I can say is thank God because those promos have been running for like the last month and a half during the weekend "Law and Order: We Frown at Things Seriously" marathons and I'll be happy to see them go. First of all, I keep seeing that one guy and thinking "Hey! It's that guy from 'House' who had a nasty case of thrush!" because that's all I can think of when I see him. IMDb indicates that his name is Marc Blucas. Good for him. Also, hopefully I won't have to listen to star Callie Thorne spit "I'm not a hooker, I'm a therapist" like it's supposed to be funny anymore. Really, though, it just seems like someone played darts with popular drama plot lines and current buzzwords (Divorce! Football! Sexting! Therapy! ) and tried to turn it into a show.

After spending untold amounts of cash on hundreds of dramas and comedies — most of which will never make it to your living rooms — the five broadcast networks will begin announcing in New York next week which projects are good enough to earn a coveted fall pickup. (NBC and Fox will present their fall schedule to advertisers on Monday, followed by ABC on Tuesday, CBS on Wednesday and the CW on Thursday).
Buzz is already strong for several projects (for more on the hot ones, click here). But every year, we always wonder what diamond-in-the-rough was left on the cutting room...

And they’re off! Casting is all but completed and production has already begun on scores of pilots for the five broadcast networks. But not every comedy and drama will go the distance. Which project has the right stuff? What pilot already has you feeling like you popped a Lunesta? Check out the mammoth slate for fall consideration. (And remember, all projects are whittled down in late April/early May before the nets present their fall slates to advertisers in New York):
