His father was a physician, and Deeping himself studied medicine at Cambridge University (UK), from which he received his medical degree. He practiced medicine in a small country town for a year.
During World War I he served in the British Army Medical Corps in Egypt, and took part in the disastrous landings at Gallipoli, Turkey. He also served as a doctor on the front lines in Belgium and France.
