While some have fallen short, there are lesser-known gems from the 2000s worth revisiting, especially now that they are available for streaming on Prime.
What Is This Show About?
One such gem is The Dead Zone, a TV series that aired on the USA Network for six seasons before its cancellation in 2007 due to the Writers Guild of America strike.
Loosely based on Stephen King's 1979 novel, the series centers on Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall), who awakens from a six-year coma with a unique ability: any contact with objects or people triggers visions of the past or future. This phenomenon is believed to be the activation of a previously unused part of his brain, the "dead zone," compensating for the damaged areas.
Johnny uses his newfound abilities to assist local authorities in solving cold cases while grappling with apocalyptic visions involving politician Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery). The series also features Nicole de Boer,...

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). In the show's third and final season,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and the series finale of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
The latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Hear All, Trust Nothing," sees the U.S.S. Cerritos being called -- at the last minute -- to oversee a diplomatic mission with a species from the Gamma Quadrant. The negotiations involve a generous gift from the Federation -- many, many kegs of liquor -- and takes place on Deep Space Nine, a space station that, Trekkies know, had its very own seven-year-long TV series from 1993 to 1999.
As briefly as possible: "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was set aboard a station that was built by the fascistic, militant Cardassians while they aggressively occupied Bajor, the planet below. When the Cardassian regime fell, the Bajorans took control of the station along with a retinue of Starfleet officers assigned to oversee Bajor's reconstruction.

Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 8, “All In.”
In the 23rd century, Starfleet didn’t have ship counselors. So, when the USS Discovery jumped from 2258 to 3188, suddenly, Dr. Culber was given two jobs instead of one. And in Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, Culber’s new gig as ship’s counselor in addition to his regular job as a physician, has added a lot of extra stress. It’s one thing to mend those phaser burns, but quite something else to maintain the mental health of the Disco crew. As Discovery returns for the second half of Season 4, Wilson Cruz jumped on the phone to discuss Culber’s journey so far, his inspirations for his character’s journey, where Discovery Season 5 might take us, and why he has so much “pride” for the Strange New Worlds crew.
Although we’ve had a few new Star Trek series since Deep Space Nine,...

Often considered to be the best entry in the Star Trek movie series, 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan stands up to multiple viewings. From the stripped down plot, a departure from the more philosophy-heavy Star Trek: The Motion Picture, to excellent cast performances, Khan is always worth your time.

René came into my life the way he did for so many others; I loved his performance on “Benson” and looked for him in movies and TV ever after. As a young actor, I could see every inch of him was trained to tell stories: His body, face and voice moved with ease and authority. I wanted to be like that. I would watch other actors I admired in those early days and play the game of “Who would you want to sit next to at dinner if you got the chance?” and René was always on that list.
After working with him on “Deep Space Nine” for seven years of long days and nights, and then 20 years of doing “Star Trek” conventions around the world with him, I was lucky enough to spend many dinners with him. And he was even more fascinating as a friend than I could have imagined.

For 50 years, the many incarnations of Star Trek have been boldly going where other shows wouldn’t.
The recent announcement that Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) will be gay in this weekend’s third installment of the Star Trek reboot films has garnered intense attention, contention, and debate. Many jilted fan boys have cried foul over director Jason Lin and writer Simon Pegg’s decision to pay homage to the original Sulu George Takei, claiming that it ruins the integrity of the character. Many have rejoiced in the “first” Lgbtq character in the franchise. Both of these camps are misguided. Star Trek has always been a place for Lgbtq representation — even when studios and public opinion refused to allow it to be overt.
Star Trek: The Original Series was groundbreaking in many ways. It was the vehicle through which one of the first televised interracial kisses occurred between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). The...

The hugely ambitious Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has no shortage of classic episodes. And you'll find a few Klingons here too...
Spoilers lie ahead for Star Trek: Deep Space 9
See related Little Me: My Life From A-z by Matt Lucas review
Overlapping with both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons had some very high points, It also had some very low ones that strayed a bit too far from the core of Star Trek for some fans, yet gave the show a unique texture that some savour.
If you only ever watch 25 stories from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, these are they, at least in my opinion – the only rule being that multi-part episodes count as one story (but great big multi-season Dominion flavoured arcs don't!)
With the 50th anniversary of Star Trek as a whole this year,...

Forces from outer space bring metal to life in Metal Shifters. And you know what? It's not bad...
Welcome back to Mystery DVD Club. The idea behind this is simple: we went and bought a whole host of films that we hadn't heard of before, none of which cost us more than a few pounds. Then, we sent them to a bunch of our writers, without telling them what 'film' they were going to receive. Could we unearth a hidden gem? Actually, we might have done...
It's a tale as old as time. A junk-yard owner builds a 20-foot fully-articulated human-like statue from scrap metal and car parts in a small Idaho town. Meanwhile, some bacteria falls to earth on a crashed satellite and turns out to have a physics-defying ability to move metal. Bacteria 'possesses' statue. Chaos ensues.

Last month, as the fate of ABC's Gcb hung in the balance, we were worried it would become a member of the "Gone Too Soon" club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish, or at least before we had a chance to grow tired of them.
Sadly, Gcb has gone to that big Upn in the sky, where it can run happily in the meadow with the likes of Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and Manimal.
While we mourn Gcb's loss, let's take a look at more shows that were ended too quickly. They were unappreciated at the the time, but they were either too good or too ... interesting ... not to have been offered the opportunity to flourish. Or flame out. Which is just as good.

Lisa Kudrow could have played it safe with her follow-up series to Friends, but instead...

Metal Tornado
Directed by: Gordon Yang
Cast: Lou Diamond Phillips, Greg Evigan, Nicole deBoer
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: May 22, 2012
Plot: A failed attempt to harvest energy from solar flares creates a tornado in Pennsylvania that has a magnetic appetite.
Who’S It For?: If you don’t like science, this movie might be fun for you. It has tornadoes and people talking about magnets, but that’s just fluff in the larger scheme of Metal Tornado. The content of the movie is fine for families, though the amount of attention it will garner from anyone in your clan is not guaranteed.
Movie:
An old roommate of mine constantly tries to defend M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening as an intentional B-movie, saying that the laughably corny film was made to be just that. Apparently, this is a defense that Shyamalan has used himself.

I live in an extraordinary time; I have had the rare privilege of being born at the exact right moment that would allow me to watch the rise, and fall, of Lou Diamond Phillip’s stardom.
Ever since I saw him at his height in Young Guns (almost as brilliant as the sequel, Young Guns II), just a scant few years after his portrayal of '50s rocker Ritchie Valens, I have secretly been saddened by his waning acting career.
I think it was 1999’s Bats that killed it. Or was it Walter Hill’s Supernova? Either way, it has never been the same. He’s gone the way of Judd Nelson and C. Thomas Howell. His latest starring role in Metal Tornado is perhaps his greatest B-movie role,...

We’ve all been told not to judge something by it’s cover. However, when you see a title like Metal Shifters, Camel Spiders, or Ice Quake, you should probably have an inkling that you’re about to watch a B movie. For the B-lovers out there, these three titles pack some ridiculous moments that are sure to entertain.
Metal Shifters:
Just when you thought there weren’t enough movies about Idaho, Paul Ziller brings B-movie lovers a little gem called Metal Shifters. Having enjoyed an array of farfetched Syfy movies, I can usually take any plot line with a grain of salt. However, with this film, I found myself pondering some simple, moral questions. My biggest quandary stems from the premise of the movie: if a strange, metal object plummeted from the sky, would your first thought be “I wonder how much I could sell that for?” Probably not.

Imagination Worldwide has recently finished production on the sci-fi thriller Metal Tornado. The film brings the "destructive power" of magnetic tornadoes on Mercury to Earth. That is not a good idea. Soon, disaster strikes as the tornadoes gain energy and size, outside of the laboratory. A release date has not been announced, but fans of natural disaster thrillers can have a look at the early film art. Expect Metal Tornado on television soon, with more details on this production swirling below.
The synopsis for Metal Tornado is here:
"When astronomers discovered the phenomena of magnetic tornadoes on the planet Mercury, they were amazed by the destructive power of these gargantuan solar-fueled magnetic fields…but they never imagined witnessing the catastrophic forces in their own backyards.
Samuel Planck is head of the Helios Project — a high tech facility tasked with storing and converting solar rays into an endless supply of renewable energy.

2011 marks the 20th anniversary of FedCon, the Star Trek-centric convention that has been running annually in Germany since 1992. While Trek is still very much the focus, FedCon has evolved and expanded to include similar franchises like Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Farscape and Stargate. It’s back to the “Cube” again. Lionsgate is soliciting pitches for “Cube 3D,” according to ShockTillYouDrop. It is not clear on whether the film would be the third part of a complete reboot of the franchise. In the original 1997 science fiction horror “Cube,” the tale is about seven complete strangers with different personalities involuntarily placed into a maze full of deadly traps. The original film was directed by Vincenzo Natali (“Splice,” “Ginger Snaps”). It starred Nicole de Boer (“Stephen King’s Dead Zone,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”), Maurice Dean Wint (“RoboCop: Prime Directives,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and David Hewlett (“Stargate: Atlantis,” “Splice”). While this weekend brings us the world premiere of the cinematic epic Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, Syfy is already putting out promotional clips for their next offering for February, Iron Invader, which sees Earth invaded by a alien bacteria that not only fatally infects people, it also brings a giant ironworks statue to life to go on a rampage.
Alien bacteria arrives on a meteorite and infects metal, animating a giant iron statue that goes on a killing rampage in a small town. It's up to Kavan Smith ("Stargate: Atlantis", "The 4400"), Chris Gauthier ("Eureka", "Smallville"), Nicole DeBoer ("Haven", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), Paul McGillion ("Stargate: Atlantis", "Sanctuary") and Donnelly Rhodes ("Battlestar Galactica", "Charles in Charge") to save the world.
If there's one thing that cast proves, it's that if you've ever starred in a Syfy original series, then you pretty much look to have a job for life appearing in Syfy original movies.

Then, the rest of the fest is dedicated to some of the wildest films made in both the fest’s home country of Canada and from around the world, including Indonesia, Serbia, the UK and the U.S.
If you’re attending the festival, there’s one incredibly fun documentary you need to see: Michael Petersen’s Eddies: The Documentary, about the craziest beer commercial-making competition in the world — that happens to take place right in Calgary every year! Petersen profiled several...

If you missed the McM Expo on the 24th and 25th of October, shame on you. The movie, comic and media exposition 5000 rocked the Excel centre in London's Docklands. Again. This year's turnout was, well, normal really and the show itself packed in more movie, media and comic titillation than an entire interweb. Shows like this happen all the time, all over the world and while they're full of memorabilia merchants and obscure comic book artist signing their obscure comic books, there's also interesting things on show like new video games and celebrities from old TV shows like Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Oh, DS9, we miss thou. But are Terry Farrell and Nicole De Boer really all that? Well, no. Not unless you're me and you'd always wanted to meet them. Even though I didn't. I was in the same room as them! Which, really, is very, very rubbish.
