The almost outrageously intense, kidnapping thriller is hitting this week, and the Prisoners trailer doesn’t pull any punches.
With the possible exceptions of Jake Gyllenhaal (because he is still underrated) and Paul Dano (because not enough people know who he is), the cast of Prisoners should sell the film by itself. The word “Oscar®” follows this movie around like a bad penny.
Hugh Jackman and Terence Howard fill the pivotal roles of fathers whose daughters have been abducted. Gyllenhaal is the lead detective on the case, and Dano plays a suspect who is caught up in the thick of things, but is too mentally challenged to have orchestrated anything as complex as this case seems to be.
Rounding out the cast are Maria Bello, Viola Davis, and Melissa Leo, and if that weren’t enough, it’s directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose Incendies was nominated in the foreign language category.

This afternoon, President Obama participated in a Google-sponsored, Google-approved video roundtable with a range of normal folk who moonlight as bloggers, entrepreneurs, and authors (including a certain one named John Green).
The hangout hit on the usual issues — the economy, immigration, gun control — with questions and answers moving like a town hall of the future. This meant there was time to talk about patent reform (thanks, red-headed kickstart advocate Limor Freid) and shots of Obama looking at a screen featuring his face looking at America.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio is eyeing to make Prisoners his next feature, an Aaron Guzikowski-scripted thriller/drama that Alcon Entertainment partners Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson bought last year.
In the movie DiCaprio would play a small-town carpenter who kidnaps the person he suspects is behind the disappearance of his young daughter and her best friend. Deadline describes the movie as Mystic River meets Taken.
In the 12 years we’ve run this company, this is the most interesting, morally complex thriller we’ve ever gotten, and we can’t wait to make the movie,
said Andrew Kosove.
The script made the most recent Black List. And the Alcon duo, who with Gil Netter are up for Best Picture for The Blind Side, are producing with Kira Davis and Adam Kohlbrenner.

Leonardo DiCaprio is apparently keen on starring in "Prisoners" for Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures says Deadline Hollywood.
Aaron Guzikowski's Black List script centers on a small-town carpenter whose young daughter and best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, the man turns vigilante and starts an investigation of his own.
Directors like Antoine Fuqua and Bryan Singer, and actors like Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Mark Wahlberg have all been circling or attached at one point in the past few years. All have since dropped out for various reasons.
DiCaprio's involvement will depend on who is directing and his schedule, whatever the case it's certainly not his next project. Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Kira Davis and Adam Kolbrenner will produce.

"Prisoners" will be set free.
Alcon Entertainment has acquired Aaron Guzikowski's hot spec with a plan to fast-track production and release the movie in October 2010. The company, which will pay mid-six figures against just over $1 million, has bested Summit and Relativity, who had been among the companies circling the project but who were not willing to commit to the fast-track schedule.
But in a twist, Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, who had previously been attached to the dark thriller, will no longer be part of the package. Producers will now look to cast new stars as well as continue the search for a director, with all of those elements expected to be on board by early fall.
The budget is expected to be in the $30-$40 million range for Guzikowski's tale, which looks at a small-town man whose daughter is kidnapped and responds in a vigilante fashion by imprisoning...
