In 1993, The Nanny premiered on CBS. From the show’s first episode, fans were zeroed in on one thing. They wanted to see Nanny Fine and Mr. Sheffield become a couple. While they eventually hooked up, the sexual tension made it easy to miss an important detail in the show. Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield was handsome and sophisticated. Still, he seemed to be underpaying his live-in nanny, Fran Fine. So, how much money did Nanny Fran Fine make; her income is lower than you might think.
How much did Nanny Fine make as the Sheffield family’s nanny?
Fran Fine was not shy about many things. She spoke about her income regularly, and her spending habits were often on full display. Several times during the series, Fran Fine revealed that she was earning $6 per hour. While her hourly wages were quite low, she did not pay rent to live at the Sheffield residence,...

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

In the 1995 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Our Man Bashir," the title character, Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), is in the station's holosuites, enacting a sexy, Ian Fleming-like spy story with his Cardassian paramour Garak (Andrew Robinson). Meanwhile, the rest of the station's senior staff are involved in a runabout accident, and they are beamed out of the explosion in the nick of time. The transporter, however, was also damaged, and the unique transporter patterns of the senior staff have to be stored in a secondary computer until it can be repaired. Perhaps predictably, the patterns end up in the same computer memory core that controls the holosuite, and the senior staff begin appearing -- as holograms -- in Bashir's spy adventure. If Bashir kills the holographic versions of his friends, their patterns will be deleted from the computer memory and they'll die.

Given how often it happens, the makers of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Picard" appear to abide by a strict mandate that every episode includes a certain number of references to older "Star Trek" shows. Several times, when said shows seem to be falling behind this presumed quota, the showrunners will include a scene in a literal warehouse that is stacked with objects, corpses, or other tchotchkes from throughout "Trek" history. This happened in the "Lower Decks" season 2 episode "Kayshon, His Eyes Open," which featured a menagerie of stuffed creatures and skeletal remains of various "Star Trek" characters, all just hanging out in the background. Fans may remember the enormous desiccated skeleton of Spock 2 as he appeared in the "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Infinite Vulcan," as well as a Gorn skeleton, the skeleton of Abraham Lincoln (perhaps rescued from the events of "The Savage Curtain"), a taxidermied M-113 creature,...

This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
When Scotty (Martin Quinn) showed up in the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" this week, chiding Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) for mucking up his Gorn trap, I didn't see it coming. In fact, even as Scotty began explaining the mechanism of the tech he built in an enthusiastic Scottish brogue, it took me a few seconds to process who he was, to connect this man to one of the most beloved characters from "Star Trek: The Original Series." That's because with the Scotty introduction, "Snw" did something it hardly ever does anymore: let a surprise be a surprise.
In the current leak-heavy pop culture landscape, the process of keeping key cameos and twists in franchise films and shows under wraps has all but become a cottage industry in its own right.

Fran Drescher is best known for playing Fran Fine in the 1990s sitcom The Nanny. The famed actor developed the series and took inspiration from her own life while creating the Queens-born nanny who found herself serendipitously on the doorstep of a widowed Broadway producer needing a nanny for his three children. Over the years, Drescher has spoken at length about the process of creating Fran Fine and just how much of herself is in the character. While she took a lot of inspiration from her own life, Drescher insists there is one key difference between herself and the infamous Manhattan nanny.

As one of the latter-most series in the "Star Trek" chronology, "Star Trek: Picard" often delivers fans the gift of retrospect. When the show isn't taking a critical look back at some of Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) leadership decisions, it's basking in the glow of nostalgia with a full "Star Trek: The Next Generation" reunion and references to various "Trek" shows of the past. This week was no different: a trip to Daystrom Station brought back a vicious tribble, Professor Moriarty (Daniel Davis), and a new Data (Brent Spiner), while Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) brought back a relic from Captain Kirk's days: the Hms Bounty.
"Trek" fans might remember the Bounty from "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," the fourth installment in the "Trek" film series and the second directed by Leonard Nimoy. "The Voyage Home" is one of...

Riker (Jonathan Frakes) break into a space-bound, top-secret Federation storage warehouse called Daystrom station. On board, the characters find a lot of shadowy corridors lined with lockers containing strange "Star Trek"-related artifacts. In one locker, Worf discovers a living tribble, only this one is equipped with fangs and a sucker mouth. In another, Raffi finds the remains of Capt. Kirk, presumably retrieved from under a pile of rocks on Veridian III. The references rest on the border of cute and insufferable, and the episode as a whole leans far too hard into nostalgic temptation.

The most recent season of "Star Trek: Picard" initially sold itself as essentially a reunion special. Early trailers boasted that most of the main cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would return, including Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner (even though Data had died several times over). While some Trekkies may have been excited about the promise of a reunion, other more cautiously pessimistic fans could immediately envision a plodding nostalgia-fest wherein characters do nothing but repeat old lines of dialogue, walk around on old sets, and become weepy over the tricorders they used several decades prior.
Quite mercifully, in the new season's first five episodes, the nostalgia has been relegated to a mere steady drip. The "Next Generation" characters have been introduced slowly, making the reunions more organic. Additionally, they...

Throughout his seemingly unending tenure on "Star Trek," actor Brent Spiner has played the android Data, his own twin brother Lore, an android prototype named B-4, and the creator of all three, the elderly Dr. Noonien Soong. Additionally, since "Star Trek" takes place over such a broad timeline, Spiner also played the son of Noonien Dr. Altan Soong, as well as two of the character's ancestors, Dr. Arik Soong, and Dr. Adam Soong, the latter of whom lived in Los Angeles in 2024. That's six different characters.
At the end of Start Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," Data sacrificed his own life to blow up an enemy ship and save the U.S.S. Enterprise from destruction. It seems that this moment was inevitable.
For the first five episodes of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," the showrunners have shown a great deal of restraint. The central cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was poised to reunite, but so far the story has taken precedence, with recognizable legacy characters slowly and organically entering the fray. Indeed, for a spell, it appeared only Picard, Riker, and Dr. Crusher were going to reunite while Worf (Michael Dorn) took care of the show's B-plot with Raffi (Michelle Hurd). The previous episode, "Imposters," even threw in a notable cameo for Cmdr. Ro (Michelle Forbes), an unexpected surprise.
With "The Bounty," the showrunners slammed their collective foot down onto the nostalgia accelerator pedal, charging headlong and shamelessly into a vat of warm sticky toffee pudding. This episode will hastily bring in three NextGen cast members, not all of them organically.

The third and final season of "Picard" made no secret of the fact that it was bringing back "Star Trek: The Next Generation" characters. Some of the earliest sneak peeks that we saw for it last year (such as this one) put the "Next Generation" crew right out in front. In addition to the requisite Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), we've already seen several familiar faces in the first half of "Picard" season 3, including Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), and the one and only Worf (Michael Dorn). “You’ll probably find this inspection boring for the likes of you,” a Starfleet official tells Admiral Picard and Captain Riker at the start of the latest trailer for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. “Well, we won’t be blowing things up,” he goes on to explain when Picard responds with incredulity. “Or taking or engaging in fire, crash landing expectedly or unexpectedly.”
Leaving aside that those things didn’t happen nearly as much in Star Trek: The Next Generation as this trailer seems to suggest, the official’s litany forgets one of the things that excites people most about the upcoming season: the debut of the Enterprise-f, the latest iteration of the ship Captained by Picard and his predecessor James T. Kirk. This will be the third version of an Enterprise under Picard’s command, as the Enterprise-d and the Enterprise-e first appeared in Star Trek: First Contact,...

It’s been almost 30 years since The Nanny named Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) from Flushing, Queens showed up at Maxwell Sheffield’s (Charles Shaughnessy) door. And then proceeded to turn the widow and his three kids’ world on its fanny. The beloved CBS sitcom that ran for six seasons starting in 1993 saw the employer-employee dynamic evolve from will-they-won’t-they to marital bliss and the birth of twins. Viewers also tuned in to follow the love-hate and love-love relationship between butler Niles (Daniel Davis) and Mr. Sheffield’s business associate C.C. (Lauren Lane). These days, the sitcom’s classic episodes have a new home on Cozi TV. With the network celebrating its 10-year anniversary and the series gearing up to mark its own milestone, we caught up with Drescher. And if you’re hoping to for more Nanny, the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actress (and SAG-AFTRA president!) gives us something to nosh on.

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" is set to debut on Paramount+ on February 16, and many recognizable characters from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" will be returning. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, and Gates McFadden will reprise their NextGen roles, while Brent Spiner will be playing Lore, Data's evil android twin. Additionally, Daniel Davis will also come back as Moriarity, the sentient holodeck version of Sherlock Holmes' nemesis. There is no word as to the return of other main cast members Wil Wheaton, Diana Muldaur, or Denise Crosby, but seeing as "Picard" is currently rolling hard with its nostalgia, there's every reason to believe one or all of them will also appear.

A new trailer for the third and final season of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” launched out of New York Comic Con Saturday, revealing new additions to the Patrick Stewart-led show’s cast — including the return of some iconic villains from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Per Paramount+, Brent Spiner will be back on “Picard,” not as Data, but as a character the streamer describes as “named Lore” — evoking one of the most formidable villains in “Next Generation” history: Data’s evil twin brother, Lore, who was defeated and disassembled at the beginning of Season 7 of “Next Gen.” Additionally, Daniel Davis will return as Professor Moriarty from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the Holodeck personification of a fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be an enemy for Sherlock Holmes. “Next Gen’s” Moriarty ended up becoming self aware.

The Next Generation crew is finally reuniting for Star Trek: Picard season 3, and it’s as much a welcome return for a whole lineup of memorable Starfleet characters as it is an ambitious sendoff for the beloved captain of the Enterprise.
Joining Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard on next year’s galactic adventure are Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, LeVar Burton as Geordi Laforge, Michael Dorn as a pacifist Worf, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi. Also returning are regular Picard cast members Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) and Michelle Hurd (Raffi). But that’s not all.
A new trailer released during the Star Trek Universe panel at this year’s New York Comic Con has revealed that there are even more characters from The Next Generation returning. If you haven’t watched it already, give the trailer a look below:

Did we really need a new take of Stephen King’s 1980 novel Firestarter? The 1984 movie starring Drew Barrymore was reasonably compelling in that way that most early King movies were, if not particularly exceptional or memorable. (Aside from the highly unfortunate “red-face” casting of George C. Scott as a Native American government hit man, which, yikes!) And some may remember that John Carpenter had originally been set to direct that first adaptation of King’s story about a young girl with a penchant for psychokinetic pyrotechnics, yet was removed from...

Falun Gong is a new religion movement that originated in the early 90s China during the boom of “qigong” spiritual practices. It declares itself as a non-violent movement with an emphasis on compassion. Its practice consists of meditative exercise sessions and it combines teachings from Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism with some minor influences of Christianity and Islam. Not all the messages the movement transmits are beyond any doubt (its disapproval of homosexuality and racial or ethnic mixing are especially questionable), and it recently allied itself with various far right organizations and media outlets in the US, which does not shed a nice light on it. Nevertheless, the movement is best known as a victim of the violent crackdown conducted by the Chinese communist government in 1999 in which those who practiced Falun Gong were imprisoned, tortured and even executed.

It’s not just your old high school and college buddies that are using stay-at-home quarantines during the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to reconnect with you over Zoom. The casts and teams behind over a dozen beloved shows or films have reunited remotely in recent weeks just to pass the time. Many of the stars are doing conversations for charity, while others are staging full remote episodes or special performances just to perk up a fan’s day. In case you missed them earlier, here are all the reunions that took place since the shutdowns began, and we’ll add more as they inevitably take place.

Here’s some news worth plotzing over: More than two decades after The Nanny ended its run on CBS, the cast has reunited for the greatest production since Yetta’s Letters. (Eat that, Andrew Lloyd Webber).
In an effort to making staying at home infinitely more fabulous, series star Fran Drescher assembled the sitcom’s original stars — including Charles Shaughnessy as Maxwell Sheffield, Daniel Davis as Niles, Lauren Lane as C. C. Babcock, Nicholle Tom as Maggie Sheffield, Benjamin Salisbury as Brighton Sheffield, Madeline Zima as Grace Sheffield and Renee Taylor as Sylvia Fine — for a virtual table read of The Nanny’s 1993 pilot episode,...

Nanny Fine, Maxwell Sheffield and the rest of the gang are getting back together on April 6 — but not in the way you might think.
“The Nanny” creator and star Fran Drescher teased on her Twitter page last week, in response to a fan who wanted to watch the popular ’90s sitcom online, that there was a “surprise” in the works.
Awe hang in! We got a surprise for you! Announcement this week! Stay tuned! Weeeee!!! https://t.co/DTe4rE6IRc
— Fran Drescher (@frandrescher) March 24, 2020
But the announcement was not that the CBS show’s six-season catalog would coming to one of the soon-to-be launched streaming services like HBO Max or Peacock, as some anticipated, or that there would be a revival of the series, which centers on a cosmetics saleswoman who is fired from her job at a bridal shop and becomes a caretaker to a Broadway producer’s three children.

Actress Fran Drescher still remembers the moment she came up with the concept for The Nanny. She was in London visiting Twiggy, her former co-star in the short-lived 1991 sitcom Princesses, and "in a very proper accent, Twiggy’s daughter said, 'Oh, Fran, my new shoes are hurting me,'" the star told Closer during her recent visit to Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family. "I said, 'Oh, honey, step on the backs of them. It breaks them in.'" The contrast between a streetsmart girl from Queens, NY, and a stiff-upper-lip Brit inspired Fran’s relationship with Mr. Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy) on The Nanny. While in London, the actress called her then-husband, producer Peter Jacobson, and said, "What do you think about a spin on The Sound of Music, only instead of Julie Andrews, I come to the door?" Fran, 60, remembers. "In a heartbeat, he said, 'That’s it!'" (Photo Credit: Getty Images) CBS agreed,...

It’s been 25 years since “The Nanny” premiered on CBS, and just in time to mark that anniversary, star Fran Drescher is teasing a revival of the classic sitcom.
“We’re talking about it. Peter and I are talking about it,” Drescher told Entertainment Tonight. Peter Marc Jacobson, who co-created the sitcom with her, is also her ex-husband and collaborator.
“We’re working on a very big project,” she added. “It’s going to be very exciting for the fans, but I’m not at liberty to announce it yet. But it’s gonna be big.”
If a revival were to get greenlit, Drescher said that her character would’ve become more involved in social issues over the past 20 years.
“She would’ve maybe gotten involved in more things [that] Fran Drescher is involved with,” she said. “All kinds of things from environmental issues,...

What would the '90s have been without "The Nanny"? A sass-less wasteland lacking quips, comebacks, and gloriously satisfying insults, that's what.
As anyone who watched the "The Nanny" knows, two things attributed to the show's success: the undeniably sassy antics of nanny Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), and the love-hate (Ok, mostly hate) relationship between Niles (Daniel Davis), the butler, and C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), the latter of which was defined by the merciless barbs they'd throw at one another. In other words, the show was swimming in sass.
Feeling nostalgic yet? Well, too bad. Because we're going to take a walk down memory lane and revisit "The Nanny's" unforgettable one-liners, sassiest jokes, and most memorable moments.

The trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows has hit the web via Apple, and offers us a short look at Sherlock’s classic antagonist, Moriarty, played by Mad Men’s Jared Harris. Introduced by Robert Downey Jr., the trailer also offers us a look at Noomi Rapace, who plays a gypsy in the sequel to the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film. Sherlock 2 also features Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes. As an aside, I’ve been watching Stng on Netflix lately and last night happened to catch the episode that features the Moriarty character as a hologram who becomes self-aware, played by Daniel Davis–fantastic stuff and well played, I thought. Here is the official synopsis:
Guy Ritchie helms a new action-packed adventure, following the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.), and his longtime trusted associate, Dr. Watson (Law), as they match wits with their arch-nemesis,...

As a long time fan of both Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek, it seems fitting to me that these two cultural icons have become intertwined. Prior to the original airing of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I had mused over the similarity in personalities between Spock and Holmes. I had no inkling that Tng would make a connection between the creations of Arthur Conan Doyle and Gene Roddenberry real on screen.
That connection came courtesy of the android Lt. Commander Data. He fancied himself as Sherlock Holmes and in the episode 'Elementary Dear Data', he created a facsimile of Victorian London so that he could 'play' Sherlock Holmes opposite Geordi La Forge's unconventional Doctor Watson.
'Elementary Dear Data' was one of the most entertaining episodes in Tng's second season but I was never entirely satisfied with it. The writers played fast and loose with Holmes canon and Brent Spiner's...
