It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

This year's Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" — are a typically varied assortment. This is a branch, after all, whose choices often reflect consideration of the work itself above Best Picture-contending frontrunners. Just last year we got nominations for films like "Bad Grandpa" and "The Lone Ranger." This time around, the cream of the crop just happened to come in critically acclaimed films. Beginning with "Foxcatcher," Bill Corso and his co-nominee, Dennis Liddiard, had a gargantuan task ahead of them: transforming well-known comedic actors Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, as well as Mark Ruffalo, into something approaching blue blood John du Pont, wrestling wunderkind Mark Schultz and his ill-fated brother Dave. They split duties, with Liddiard handling Tatum's transformation, Corso working on Carell and the two of them coming to Ruffalo when needed. For both Tatum and Ruffalo, given that they were playing wrestlers,...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Welcome to one of the most unique categories at the Oscars. Best Makeup & Hairstyling is the only category to still feature the "bake-off” phase, where three nominees are chosen from seven finalists after those finalists each make a pitch-via-reel to the branch. Every year features surprise omissions and inclusions, both among the final seven and the final three. The category seems almost uniquely immune to being overwhelmed by the overall reputation of a film. (Best Costume Design is its only rival in this respect.) Films of questionable quality are nominated nearly every year. While some lament the titles that have earned the moniker "Oscar nominee” ("Norbit” perhaps being the most infamous example), I for one love the fact that this branch actually strives to do what it is tasked with. While these macro-level characteristics of the category permeate the nominations process, trends among the nominees are nevertheless observable. The category tends to award monster makeup,...

The Oscars. Hollywood’s biggest night of the year took place Sunday and I was in the press room once again for all the winner’s speeches. From comic turned reporter David Arquette crashing the room (he reportedly was covering the event for Sirius Xm radio, which carries Howard Stern’s show) and asking a question of winner Christoph Waltz to the surprise tie between Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty in the Sound Editing category to Jennifer Lawrence’s explanation of her trip up to the stage, here are some moments from backstage at the Dolby Theatre.
I for one cheered to see women in film bringing home the gold in the technical categories. Those with Academy Awards were Karen Baker Landers for achievement in sound editing for her work on Skyfall, a first win for Costume Designer Jacqueline Durran and her gorgeous work on Anna Karenina, Lisa Westcott’s...

In retrospect it may have felt like a night of obvious winners and very few surprises but only the Brits were spot on with their predictions.
The Oscars are one of the most talked about events of the year - and only British social media users were talking about the right winners of last night's 85th Academy Awards. A full list of winners is included below, along with an infographic.
Over one million social media mentions were analysed over seven days by leading global film communications company Way To Blue which revealed that people in the UK were the only nation to correctly predict all four winners of the big four Awards (Best Director, Film, Actor and Actress).
A huge 81 per cent of British social media users either correctly predicted or wanted Daniel Day Lewis to win his third Oscar for Best Actor, whilst 57 per cent were backing Jennifer Lawrence...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

In one of the most unique Oscar races to come down the pike in quite a while, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Argo won the Academy Award for best motion picture of the year during the live ABC telecast of the Oscars from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. Actor Jack Nicholson and First Lady Michelle Obama (via satellite) presented producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney the statue.
Of the win, director Ben Affleck said backstage, “ I was excited about making the movie. These guys had a script, I really liked it, I called them up, and asked will you put me on the movie? And I wanted to do the movie and I wanted to work with them. That’s what I thought would happen. I wanted to work on some quality. I did the movie, we all worked really hard, I hoped that people would like it.

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.

At the Oscars as on a movie set, the hair and makeup people always know best. Just minutes before Anne Hathaway claimed the Best Supporting Actress statuette, Les Misérables' Oscar-winning hair-and-makeup team talked about the power of Hathaway's on-camera shorning. "We could have easily done it with wigs," Lisa Westcott told press-room reporters backstage at the 85th Annual Academy Awards. "[But Hathaway] really wanted to do it." Added Julie Dartnell, "It was very effective, very emotional as well." The shorning scene is the high point, as it were, of the downward arc of Hathaway's Les Mis character, the doomed Fantine. Noted Westcott: "It...

No tears in sight as Les Misérables takes Oscar for best hair and makeup at 2013 Academy Awards
Oscars 2013 coverage continues on our liveblog
Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell have won the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling for Les Misérables at the 85th Academy Awards in La.
The duo were also successful at the Bafta awards in the same category, with Les Misérables' grimy 19th-century stylings proving popular with the key voters.
This is Dartnell's first Oscar nomination, but Westcott has been tipped twice before, in 1998 with Mrs Brown and 1999 with Shakespeare in Love, but lost out both times.

It’s the biggest night in Hollywoodland and we’re along for the crazy, caffeine-fueled night. Whether it’ll be Lincoln’s night or a wider net of awards there’ll be plenty to talk about for weeks to come.
If you’re on Twitter then follow us tweet the night away over at @heyuguys and you can keep abreast of all the winners as they are announced right here.
Ang Lee’s Life of Pi took home the most awards, with four statues to its name for Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.
Ben Affleck’s Argo and Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables were next, taking three apiece. Affleck’s third feature took the most coveted award of the evening, very much deservedly winning him, George Clooney, and Grant Heslov the Best Picture award, as well as taking home the Best Film Editing and...

The 85th annual Academy Awards are being held this evening and "Argo" won Best Picture. The award was accepted by producers Grant Heslov, George Clooney and Ben Affleck, who was famously snubbed in the Best Director category.
Heslov was anything but subtle in pointing out the oversight, making a special point to thank Affleck for being a "great director" before turning over the mic.
"I want to thank my wife, who I don't normally associate with Iran," Affleck said in a charming acceptance speech, also thanking everyone up to and including the entire nation of Canada.
Ang Lee, for what it's worth, won Best Director for "Life of Pi." It was the fourth win for the film on the evening, follwing Oscars for Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

Oscar week concluded on Saturday afternoon with my favorite event of the week – the Hair and Makeup symposium. The Academy invited the public to join them to celebrate the achievements of this year’s nominees in the category. The nominees discussed their creative processes and presented film clips, photographs and displays of their work, including appliances, molds and wigs.
The event was moderated by makeup artists and hairstylists branch governor Leonard Engelman with special guests director Sacha Gervasi (Hitchcock) and actor Graham McTavish (The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey).
Nominees Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell said, “Anne Hathaway insisted on having her hair cut for real in the movie and it was completely her decision. She was absolutely clear that she wanted to do it. We could have easily done it with wigs and full cap and basically a bald cap and a very, very fine wig on the top and...

Remember back in ancient times -- oh, about eight weeks ago -- when it seemed "Zero Dark Thirty" was going to sweep the Academy Awards? The Oscar race has twisted and mutated a lot over the past two months. Even with near-certainties in some categories, many of the top prizes are still up for grabs, and upsets are always possible. That's made the 2013 Oscar race one of the most exciting in years for fans to follow, and its ending this Sunday, Feb. 24, is likely to spread the wealth in a way that either pleases everyone a little, outrages everyone a little, or both. Academy members had to submit their ballots by Tuesday, Feb. 19, but even so, there were some last-minute developments that helped clarify the race a little. Best Picture frontrunner "Argo" picked up a couple more awards, one from the American Cinema Editors (the "Eddie" for Best Drama; "Silver LInings Playbook...

The Academy recently changed the name of the Best Makeup category to Best Makeup & Hairstyling but in truth hairstyling, wigs and whatnots have long been part of the diverse criteria for which Oscar voters are meant to reward Achievements in Makeup. But how does one define "achievement"? True to awards season in general (it's not just Oscar voters, mind you) the definition is usually "most=best". Sadly nearly almost all the golden statuettes in this category have gone to prosthetic effects -- werewolves, dwarves, you name it! It's the one category other than visual effects where genre films regularly lord it over more "noble-minded" efforts... (though strangely zombie pictures are the exception since they never even make the finalist list).
So, how refreshing would it be if the Oscar went to the Hair and Makeup team of Les Misérables this year? I was surprised to hear on the podcast that...

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Life of Pi ended up getting 11 noms, Les Miserables got 8, Silver Linings Playbook got 8 as well, Argo ended up with 7, Zero Dark Thirty has 5, Skyfall got 5, Django Unchained got 5 and The Avengers got 1.
There aren't many surprises this year, some might think that Beasts of the Southern Wild was a surprise, but there's been so much ridiculous hype for the...

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.
