After calling Time magazine’s long interview with Donald Trump “shocking” and “reprehensible” earlier today, Joe Biden this evening doubled down on his predecessor’s dystopian second term plans.
“Trump did a long interview with Time magazine,” the president told an Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander fundraiser at Washington DC’s Mayflower Hotel on Wednesday. “It’s coming out, you gotta read it. It’s a mandatory read.”
“This election is about competing values and competing visions for America,” Biden added to a crowd that had Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-il) and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai among the attendees. “Trump’s values and visions are ones of anger, hate, revenge, retribution.”
In case his audience didn’t take his advice, the incumbent then cited a couple of the topics in the wide ranging “How Far Would Trump Go?’ piece like letting the states control abortion rights, monitoring pregnant women,...

As Tj and Jesse Mizell stroll through the Amsterdam Houses — the community of brick buildings for low-income households on Manhattan’s Upper West Side where they grew up — residents play basketball and stand around chatting. It’s an unusually sunny March day, and it feels good to be outside. One friendly older woman waves at the Mizells. “It’s been so long,” she shouts. “How are you? How is your mother?” The men, who moved from here to Los Angeles in 2018, wave back, grinning. All is well, they reassure her.

Other than making records, what do Green Day, the Notorious B.I.G., classic crooners Perry Como and Johnny Mathis, Latin music giant Héctor Lavoe, and the late Bill Withers have in common? Not much, until today: Works by all those musicians, and over a dozen more, were announced as the latest additions to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
Signed off on by then-president Bill Clinton in 2000, the Registry has aimed to collect recordings —musical performances, speeches, and other audio — deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically important.” The first...

The Artists Rights Alliance, backed by around 200 music artists including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Camila Cabello, has released an open letter calling on digital music developers to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”
The campaign raised the alarm on the the use of musical works by AI developers that without permission train and produce AI “copycats,” or use AI “sound” to dilute royalty obligations. Their intervention came as the threat from AI to creators, and its value to tech giants, is an increasing focus for the legal and pop music fields.
“Working musicians are already struggling to make ends meet in the streaming world, and now they have the added burden of trying to compete with a deluge of AI-generated noise. The unethical use of generative AI to replace human artists will devalue the entire music...

Listen closely: On “Principles,” the jarring penultimate track of Kim Gordon’s new solo album, The Collective, are the words she’s wailing “an actress of life”? Or is that last word “light” or “lies” or “live” or something else? The line transmits differently if you listen to it on a big stereo, expensive headphones, a beach speaker, shitty AirPods, and shittier iPhone speakers, since she’s buried it so deeply in atmospheric reverb and industrial clanging. You gotta open up your earholes. With vocals mixed so opaquely, listening to...

Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and Valerie June combined forces to call for a more transparent and equitable healthcare system in a new PSA set to air this Sunday during Super Bowl Lviii.
Organized by the nonprofit group Power to the Patients, the spot specifically highlights the way hospitals and insurance companies are able to get away with not clearly stating how much certain services and procedures cost and then billing patients afterward. Musicians Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson and Valerie June are heading to the Super Bowl — in a new ad for the nonprofit organization Power to the Patients.
The performers appear in a new spot that raises awareness about the health care crisis in America and pushes for officials to be more transparent about the cost of health care. In the commercial, the singers criticize hospitals and insurance companies for robbing patients, many of whom have dealt with medical debt.
“Hospitals and insurance companies all around the United States are stealing our future by looting every patient, worker, employer and family across the country,” Jelly Roll, known for hits like “Need a Favor” and “Save Me,” said in a statement.
Wilson, who won her first Grammy last week, added: “American citizens in need of care are afraid to enter a hospital.”

Seconds after Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson entered the holding room where presenters and performers at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala were to take this picture, someone became starstruck — but who that was might surprise you.
“It’s Jelly Roll!” Wilson shouted excitedly as she saw the Grammy-nominated singer-rapper. But the feeling was mutual, as Jelly Roll later murmured, if only to himself, about the surrealness of the moment. He was standing in proximity to Hanks and Wilson as Dionne Warwick sat nearby and members of Green Day were hanging out while everyone waited for one of music’s greatest architects — Davis himself — to arrive.
The interaction was just one of several “pinch-me” moments as the likes of The Isley Brothers, Maluma, Josh Groban, Lainey Wilson and many more came together to take a snapshot with Davis and commemorate the night of amazing music that was to come at the legendary party,...

Zee-Sony Merger Back On Track
The merger of Zee Entertain Enterprises and Sony’s Indian arm looks to be back on track after an order banning Punit Goenka from managing the new entity was lifted yesterday. The merger of Zee and Culver Max Entertainment was given the go-ahead in August, but the merger has run into several problems. The India Securities and Exchange Board had barred Goenka and his father, Zee founder Subhash Chandra, from the boardrooms of listed companies for a year over allegations of insider trading. However, the Securities Appellate Tribunal has overturned that decision, paving the way for the $10B merger to go ahead and for Goenka to resume his role as MD and CEO of Zee. Sony and Zee have been planning the union for over two years now.

Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.
The victim: Tupac Shakur.
It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.
Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.
Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”
He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.
“[Dear Mama] was very matter of fact, very frank about what happened.

Back in 2001, John Mellencamp released “Cuttin’ Heads,” an unlikely team-up with hip-hop icon Chuck D. The singer-songwriter reflected on some of the song’s more contentious lyrics in a new episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, explaining why he doesn’t think rappers — even Black ones — shouldn’t use the N-word in their songs.
“Me and Chuck D did a song 20 years ago,” Mellencamp recalled of his collab with the Public Enemy leader. “We were talking about the N-word. We were talking about how it’s not supposed to be used… That’s what I have against — not against, but why I’m not a big fan of rap music. You guys are selling out what the people stood up for and fought for, and you’re making money off of it selling it to white kids? I don’t like it.”

The only thing more extra than a surprise birthday party might be a surprise birthday party live on cable TV – and that’s what Chris Cuomo got to celebrate his 53rd.
“Cuomo” was setting up to take viewer phone calls on Wednesday night when producer Alexandra “Dusty” Cohen stopped the host cold:
“You’ve got to listen to me – this is important. It’s your birthday, and we’re not taking calls. You’re just gonna listen to me and be quiet,” she said, basically asking the impossible of the talkative NewsNation anchor. “We put something together for you because we love you. I love you. A lot of people love you. … Be quiet and take a look.”
The first face onscreen belonged to Bill O’Reilly, Cuomo’s longtime friend – and one of the former CNN anchor’s many close media pals with whom he doesn’t share political views.

If there’s one thing married couple Floyd Rance and Stephanie Tavares-Rance know how to do, it’s keep a secret. Last year, on the eve of the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, its founders were tight-lipped about their 20th anniversary opening-night presenters. “I just told my mother,” says Tavares-Rance of the fact that Barack and Michelle Obama were on hand to screen their Higher Ground and Netflix documentary Descendant.
This year, the Rances face the unexpected of another kind, with the SAG-AFTRA strike beginning weeks before the Aug. 4-12 fest, which is preventing actors from promoting their projects. Says Tavares-Rance, with equanimity: “Celebrity is awesome — people love to see their favorite actor or actress on the stage, but it really is about these filmmakers of color, specifically African American filmmakers, that we want to highlight.”

The world suffered an enormous loss earlier this May when it was announced that Tina Turner had passed away, and again last week when Tony Bennett died at 96. And now, one more extraordinarily bright musical light has been snuffed. The radical, pioneering Irish musician Sinéad O'Connor has died at the age of just 56.
She burst on the scene bald, brazen, and with unmatched lyrical ferocity in 1987 with her debut album "The Lion and The Cobra." The album became an overnight international sensation, and with "Nothing Compares 2 U," the Prince-penned lead single of her 1990 follow-up "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got," she became a star. BBC Studios, the U.K. public broadcaster’s commercial arm, reported record full-year financials, including its highest-ever revenue and earnings, touting on Tuesday the strength of its Content Studio unit and “thriving brands like Bluey and Dancing With the Stars.”
The company unveiled key strategic and financial performance data for the fiscal year 2022/2023, which ended in March. Overall revenue, or sales, crossed the milestones of £2.0 billion, $2.0 billion and $2.5 billion, hitting £2.09 billion (nearly $2.70 billion), up 28 percent from the £1.63 billion recorded in the previous year. “This increase was driven by growth in its global Content Studio, which fuelled BBC Studios’ catalog, while thriving brands like Bluey and Dancing with the Stars and strong long-term partnerships also contributed to the year’s performance,” the company said.
Its profit, as measured in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) rose 6 to £240 million ($310 million) from £226 million “despite pressures from inflation, a volatile advertising market...
