Served as a lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders in World War I and was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans.
He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners:
Rebecca (1940)

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

Father of the Bride (1950)
.
One child, daughter Valerie.
Made his stage debut in 1914 with Dennis King, who was actually the call boy, as two footmen in 'The Return of the Prodigal at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
