The story of MTV is set to be rolled out in a new podcast series hosted by former VJ Dave Holmes.
Audacy Podcasts is launching Who Killed the Video Star? The Story of MTV, an eight-part series that launches today, March 27.
“MTV is still on the air in 2024, and it’s still profitable, but my nieces and nephews know it as a logo on an Urban Outfitters t-shirt. I wanted to know what happened, and where the spirit of MTV exists now,” said Holmes.
The series will explore the cultural history, impact, legacy, and phenomenon of MTV and looks at what it turned into.
Holmes, who previously hosted Waiting for Impact, the wild story of boy band Sudden Impact, is hosting with guests including former VJs such as Julie Brown, Damien Fahey, and Kevin Seal, former MTV News correspondents Gideon Yago, Chris Connelly, and Suchin Pak, former Viacom Music and Entertainment Group president Doug Herzog,...

In the late 1980s, a group of grumpy music journalism vets and fresh-faced 20-somethings came together for a radical media experiment: the launch of a cable news division programmed for, and largely run by American youth. On May 9, 2023 — 36 years after its inception — Paramount announced that the fruits of their labor, MTV News, had been shuttered for good.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to many of MTV News’ star reporters — Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren, John Norris, Alison Stewart, Chris Connelly, SuChin Pak and Gideon Yago — and visionary executives Doug Herzog and Ocean MacAdams to reminisce about the glory days of the outfit, where one day you might be hanging backstage with Prince in Paris, the next chasing a pre-White House Bill Clinton through the snowy streets of New Hampshire.
For each of them, it was a bittersweet journey they were more than happy to take.

“The Larry Sanders Show” was a 1990s TV trailblazer: shot documentary-style and without a laugh track, the HBO comedy about a fictional late night show relied on awkward humor, sharp dialogue and celebrity cameos to create its signature satirical style. "Good Morning America" hosted a mini-"Larry Sanders Show" reunion Friday, where Gary Shandling and Jeffrey Tambor reflected on the show's legacy and told some stories about its early days.
Tambor told Chris Connelly he knew the show would be a hit from the moment he read the script, but was less sure his character Hank Kingsley's catchphrase "Hey now" would catch on. "When I read the script, I said, 'I could see it.' I think I was the most convinced of anybody ... Well I actually didn't think 'Hey now,' was gonna deliver, but [Shandling] said, 'Just say it."'

Lil Wayne celebrates his release from prison, MTV News decided to take look at Weezy's career, and as we sorted through vintage footage of the young Mc, we realized that MTV and Wayne go way back.
MTV News caught up with Cash Money in 1999, at the very beginning, and correspondent Chris Connelly was so surprised that Wayne was the youngest member of the crew that he had to confirm that he was indeed 14 years old.
"Yeah, but that's on the hush," Lil Wayne responded.
"I used to always be in the neighborhood and they had a former artist named Lil Slim," said Wayne explaining how he came to...

"Green Day: Rock Band" hits retail outlets this week, and both video game enthusiasts and Green Day aficionados are excited about the sentiment. The game not only features the three men from Green Day but also a number of band-specific pieces of equipment, dozens of awesome songs and plenty of iconic venues from the band's long and varied career.
One venue definitely not recreated in the game is Woodstock '94, which was a huge turning point for the band. Their major-label debut Dookie had only come out a few months before and they had already picked up plenty of buzz because of their two breakout singles "Longview" and "Basket Case." But the Woodstock performance was something entirely different. They took the stage at the water-logged venue (rain had turned the entire space to mud on the first day of the three-day festival, turning the entire experience brown) and delivered a...

Remember John Norris, formerly of MTV News? When I was a wee lad, MTV played (oftentimes good) music and had their own half-hour news program co-anchored by Tabitha Soren and Kurt Loder (who now also has his own web thing going on). Norris was one of the later alternate faces of MTV News - along with Chris Connelly and Serena Altschul - and had done some work with other pop-culture television programs. If you were a teen in the mid-90s this is probably old hat, otherwise consider these tidbits your valuable pop-culture history lesson of the day. I’ve occasionally wondered what these folks have been up to now that it’s not the 90s, as it turns out, John Norris is still plugging away interviewing bands, only now it’s for a site called Noisevox. Billed as an “open music magazine”, Noisemakers on Noisevox features live footage and...

Inspired, perhaps, by our recent blog entry Introducing Paris Jackson, or maybe just unable to keep himself from exploiting the talents of his progeny, Joe Jackson apprised ABC's "Good Morning America" this week of his two latest managerial prospects: None other than his 11 year-old granddaughter, Paris, and his 9 year-old grandson, Blanket. After telling third-party interviewer Chris Connelly "there's no one else to do what we [can] do for them," Jackson (who was reportedly paid $200,000 for the interview) goes on to note, "I keep watching Paris. ...

The Da Vinci Code was an enormous success back in 2006, although had the movie been as entertaining as National Treasure, who knows what the ceiling could have been for it. Still, $750 million worth of movie tickets sold told us what we already knew: There will be other Dan Brown movies.
This summer, we'll get the Da Vinci prequel, Angels & Demons, which will feature Robert Langdon ( Tom Hanks) in a much less obvious wig. The Catholics were ready and waiting for director Ron Howard and company, both forbiding the film from being shot near religious locations in Rome (although we're still going to see some guerilla footage in the movie, according to Howard) and beginning their assault on the film's message earlier and louder than they did in 2006.
Obviously, there are millions and millions of people who believe some of what they believe in the Dan Brown books, and that scares Catholics,...

Ethan Hawke fired off at a nosy TV interviewer when pressed about his feelings after seeing estranged wife Uma Thurman getting romantic with other men. American broadcaster Chris Connolly was granted a candid chat with the Training Day star for a segment on magazine show 20/20, but after answering questions about his failed marriage - which he blamed on movie ambitions - Hawke became agitated when the interviewer probed deeper. After showing photographs taken of Thurman cavorting on the beach with hotelier Andre Balzas at Christmas, Connolly asked if he was hurt by the romance. Upset Hawke fired back, "That's a leading question. How am I supposed to answer that, man? Do you think it's tough? It's very tough." Hawke then calmed down to reveal he misses the "dream" of marriage and is desperately trying to be mature enough to cope with the bitter split for the sake of his kids. He added, "You gotta think about your kids. I love my kids so much that it breaks my heart to have anything negative said about Uma or me. I'd rather it be about me, frankly. What are you gonna do, man? I'm trying to be a grown up."...
