Lately, younger fans of Harry Styles and Taylor Swift have been trying to piece together the puzzle of exactly who Dita Von Teese is. The burlesque legend had a cameo in Styles’ leading man debut Don’t Worry Darling then popped up in the video for Swift’s Midnights single “Bejweled.”
Von Teese, meanwhile, has been blissfully unaware that a new generation is discovering her.

For reasons both related and unrelated to the contents of the movie itself, "Don't Worry Darling" has been dominating headlines in the film world. When the Olivia Wilde-directed psychological thriller arrived in American theaters in late September 2022 following a much-discussed festival bow, it was one of the most hotly-anticipated mainstream releases of the fall season. All that buzz has translated to plentiful financial gains during the film's first week of release, even in the wake of very mixed reviews. Love it or hate it, "Don't Worry Darling" appears to be making quite a splash.
You can, like me, be of the opinion that the work done by Wilde and screenwriter Katie Silberman is accomplished enough to deserve some presence in the public consciousness. But whether or not the flaws of "Don't Worry Darling" tip the film past the point of enjoyability for you, the movie clearly owes a lot...

Harry Styles's English accent was put to the test in "Don't Worry Darling," and fans were quick to notice the sudden shift in his typical North London lilt. Throughout the majority of the film, which premiered on Sept. 23, Styles speaks in an altered English accent that, while similar to his own off screen, breaks at certain points throughout the film.
On Aug. 24, a clip of Styles speaking as Jack Chambers circulated on Instagram, sparking criticism from fans who dubbed his English accent "fake" and pointed out slips, adding that his voice "changes twice" in the clip. "Why is Harry Styles, allegedly English, doing such a bad English accent," one user commented.
Other fans were equally confused when full clips of Styles speaking in an American tone began to circulate, leading to confusion about whether his character is English or American. While Styles's performance in the movie has led several...

After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in 19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another 10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at 30 million.
The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was 35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches 100 million.

In Olivia Wilde’s second feature film as a director, Don’t Worry Darling, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles star as Alice and Jack Chambers, a young couple who live in a 1950s planned community called Victory. Jack goes to work in the morning, like every other man in town, and participates in the mysterious Victory Project. All of which is overseen by the equally mysterious Frank (Chris Pine), a charismatic cult leader type who built the whole place.
Alice, like every other woman in town, stays home to clean, cook, and prepare for her husband’s return home—which in the case of Alice and Jack, often results in lusty, vigorous sex. She also finds time in the afternoon to shop, go to dance class, and gossip with her next door neighbor, Bunny (Wilde).

There’s a moment in Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s (Booksmart) second film as director, where the blandly named Jack Chambers (pop-singer-turned-actor Harry Styles) jumps onto a stage with a backing band to dance joylessly at the behest of the singularly named Frank (Chris Pine), the founder and CEO of the Victory Project, and the leader of the nearby company town closely modeled on mid-century Palm Srpings, California. For Jack, dancing onstage functions as an outward celebration of a much-coveted promotion. For Frank, it’s an opportunity to pull a little more firmly on Jack’s marionette strings, reminding Jack that Frank singularly retains the absolute right to exile Jack and his wife, Alice (Florence Pugh), from their socially engineered utopia, for real or perceived transgressions. While Jack...

Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling received an enthusiastic reception at its world premiere Monday night in Venice despite the whiff of slow-burn scandal that has been trailing the film for weeks.
The Venice audience responded with hearty applause and some hooting as the curtain closed on the feminist-themed Warner Bros. Pictures movie, with the crowd rising to give Wilde and her cast a standing ovation lasting around seven minutes. Some of the loudest cheers undoubtedly were reserved for Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The popstar turned actor attracted a red carpet contingent to rival only the Chalamaniacs in its ardor — some Styles super-fans were even spotted camping out beside the carpet the night before to secure their place in the front row.
Before the screening, costume designer Adrianne Phillips was awarded the Campari Passion for Film award. In her speech...

Florence Pugh is one of our finest working actresses today, particularly because she knows how to use her face like she's not saving it for later. Pugh's face will contort into a grimace, a manic grin, or a full-throated sob all within the span of a minute — which is what makes her so perfectly suited to playing women on the verge of a breakdown.
It's also what makes Olivia Wilde's highly anticipated sophomore effort "Don't Worry Darling" perfectly tailored to Pugh, who stars in the psychological thriller as a woman happily living in a suburban idyll with her loving husband (Harry Styles) ... until she starts to feel that something is wrong. Pugh is unsurprisingly immaculate as the slowly unraveling housewife, but as much as "Don't Worry Darling" tries to match her stroke for stroke, both in Wilde's many, many stylistic flourishes and in Katie Silberman's high-minded script,...

Olivia Wilde’s second feature behind the camera, Don’t Worry Darling, will more likely be remembered for the offscreen intrigue — tabloid romance, lead actor replacement, a glaringly public serving of custody papers, a rumored clash between director and star — than it is for much else in this umpteenth Stepford Wives knockoff. That’s not to say it’s without sizeable pluses, chief among them a meaty lead role for the dependably compelling Florence Pugh, who hasn’t played a woman in this much peril since Midsommar. It also scores points for allowing Chris Pine to show what a devilishly charismatic villain he can be.
The high-concept, low-satisfaction psychological thriller marks an ambitious upgrade in scope for Wilde from the character-driven coming-of-age comedy of Booksmart, and she handles the physical aspects of the project with assurance. It’s just a shame all the effort...

The second annual Arkansas Underground Film Festival returns to Hot Springs, Ar on Aug. 13-15 for an eclectic mix of both classic and modern films and videos.
Actually, after the festival’s official website vanished from the web following their inaugural edition last year, I thought Arkuff had called it quits. But, they’ve simply moved to a new website and are apparently somehow affiliated with the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.
It also seems to be a totally curated festival sans submissions from filmmakers. The fest mostly consists of themed short film blocks, such as first films by filmmakers like David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Jim Henson and Guy Maddin; a night of classic avant-garde films by Bruce Conner and Kenneth Anger; a William Wegman retrospective; and a block devoted to Riot Grrrl cinema by Sadie Benning and Miranda July.
