Zdf Studios Boards Charlene McKenna Thriller ‘Clean Sweep,’ Set for Sundance Now and Rte (Exclusive)
Adding to its growing roster of overseas drama titles, Germany’s Zdf Studios has snagged international distribution rights to “Clean Sweep,” a six-part Irish thriller which is set to premiere on Sundance Now and Irish public broadcaster RTÉ.
“Clean Sweep” stars Charlene McKenna, Captain Swing in “Peaky Blinders,” in a crime drama told from the point-of-view of the killer who is also, unusually, a self-sacrificing mother and wife. Filming is now underway.
McKenna, whose credits take in “Bloodlands” and “Vienna Blood,” plays Shelly Mohan, a woman living a quiet life in Western Ireland as a housewife and mother of three who kills her former partner in crime when he threatens to expose her dark past.
With her unsuspecting husband, a Garda detective, hunting for the murderer, Shelly has to contend with the pressures of a tightening noose as well as continuing to care for an ailing son, her unfaithful husband...

Telefilm Canada and Screen Ireland have boarded “Cry From the Sea,” a co-production between Canada’s Sepia Films and Ireland’s ShinAwil, which has been greenlit to shoot in the Fall.

Exclusive: U.S. sales firm Cmg, which recently found success with Oscar-nominated box office hit Loving Vincent, has boarded world sales rights to upcoming Ireland-Canada co-production Cry From The Sea.
The deal was inked with Vancouver-based production company Sepia Films and Dublin-based outfit ShinAwiL. Cmg will handle sales in all markets outside of Canada, where LevelFILM is distributing, and Ireland, where Wildcard will release.

The Irish Film Board has made two key hires in the shape of Creative England senior film executive Celine Haddad and development executive and script editor Dearbhla Regan who are both joining the funding body as project managers within the production and development team.
Haddad and Regan will work alongside Lesley McKimm, who was appointed last September, to manage the slate of Ifb supported projects from development through to production and distribution.
The duo take over from outgoing project managers Keith Potter and Mary Callery.

Ireland’s Galway Film Fleadh launched its 25th edition last night (July 9) with a screening of Spanish-Irish co-production Tasting Menu [pictured].
Director Roger Gual and star Fionnula Flanagan attended the screening at Galway’s Town Hall Theatre and joined guests afterwards for an opening night party at the Galway Rowing Club. Tasting Menu is produced by Zentropa Spain and Ireland’s Subotica.
The Fleadh runs until July 14, with guests set to include Zachary Quinto, screenwriter Daniel Waters and Julien Temple, who will all take part in masterclasses. Saoirse Ronan will also attend the festival, while Hubbard Casting will deliver a casting workshop.

EDINBURGH — The bodies keep piling up and so do the laughs in Irish director Ian Fitzgibbon’s clever and very funny black farce “A Film With Me In It.” With an attitude towards sudden death as droll as in the best Ealing Studios comedies, the film lampoons the fevered imagination of screenwriters in its tale of two would-be filmmakers who must deal with one calamity after another in the confines of a basement apartment.
Featuring standout comic performances by Mark Doherty, who wrote the script, and Dylan Moran, the picture’s bracingly dark sense of humor and adherence to its own perverse logic will please audiences that enjoyed such comedies as “Withnail and I” and “A Fish Called Wanda.”
Doherty plays Mark, a sad-sack actor whose chance of landing even the bit part of “Onlooker” in his latest audition is remote. Moran is his best friend Pierce, a wastrel who spends his time at the pub and his money on the horses as he dreams up hackneyed screenplays.
Mark lives with his quadriplegic brother David David O’Doherty), pretty girlfriend Sally (Amy Huberman) and her indolent pet dog Jersey. Their place is filled with broken things such as window sashes and lighting fixtures that landlord Jack (Kevin Allen) refuses to fix until the rent is paid.
Sally storms out after discovering that Mark hasn’t paid the rent in three months. He senses things may get worse when a shelving unit collapses and kills her dog. Then when a heavy chandelier crashes down from the ceiling with even more unpleasant results, he’s sure of it.
Doherty’s script is sly and increasingly hilarious as nitwits Mark and Pierce deal with an escalating number of dead people and conspire to dream up madly unreasonable explanations they think might sound plausible to the police.
Moran gets the slightly fractured speech borne of an alcohol soaked brain exactly right while Doherty captures Marks bewilderment perfectly. Director Fitzgibbon hits all the right notes with comic finesse as the film heads towards its pleasingly delirious conclusion.
