Ten years after the release of his Def Jam debut, the Hell Can Wait EP, Vince Staples occupies an ambiguous middle-ground, stuck between platinum-certified arena status and the ephemeral virality that defines too much of the mainstream rap industry. It’s a space that he shares with a handful of others – Maxo, Rapsody, Navy Blue, his onetime Odd Future colleague Earl Sweatshirt – and which allows him to craft densely thematic musical suites on a major-label platform without the pressure of landing a radio hit. He’s made good use of...

From an early age, we’re trained from media osmosis to expect, and to celebrate, performers who lord their power, their status, and their entitlement over us. We celebrate, with a certain degree of self-loathing, these peoples’ transformations from regular Joes to the icons we’re raised by television, magazines, and movies to want to be.
Talking Heads, the quartet consisting of David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, have a more centered, settled sensibility, one that somehow still doesn’t compromise the energy we expect and want from a good rip-roaring concert. In Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense, the group put on a show that revels in a smaller, more personal, self-actualization: It’s about rock stars learning to dominate themselves as opposed to others, to fit into a wider-reaching society that they accept as baffling, uncomfortable, and joyous.

The Talking Heads Tribute album Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense has arrived today, and it begins with a cover of “Psycho Killer” from none other than Miley Cyrus.
The album, announced by A24 Music back in January in the wake of Stop Making Sense’s 40th anniversary re-release, features renditions of the film’s original 16 tracks. Paramore kicked things off with their cover of “Burning Down the House,” Lorde reimagined “Take Me to the River,” The National covered “Heaven,” and girl in red tackled “Girlfriend Is Better.”
Other contributions come from Cyrus, Kevin Abstract (“Once in a Lifetime”), Teezo Touchdown (“Making Flippy Floppy”), Blondshell (“Thank You For Sending Me an Angel”), The Linda Lindas (“Found a Job”), Badbadnotgood and Norah Jones (“This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)”), and more. Miley Cryus has unveiled a synth-laden cover Talking Heads’ 1977 hit “Psycho Killer.” The singer recorded the rendition, which she previewed live at Chateau Marmont in March, for Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute to Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense, out now.
While Cyrus offered an acoustic version of the song at Chateau Marmont, her recorded cover is far edgier, falling somewhere between pop and dance music. It embraces an ’80 synth sensibility, with angular beats and fuzzed out vocals.

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

Growing up in Texas in the 2000s, new-generation rap-rock star Teezo Touchdown was largely unfamiliar with Talking Heads. But as he was making his own records and plotting a stage show, some of his colleagues thought he’d be inspired by the band and called up a clip from its 1984 concert movie, Stop Making Sense. “The opening shot of David Byrne coming out with a boombox and doing ‘Psycho Killer’ — I had a true discovery moment,” Teezo recalls. “With what he was doing, and the production and the visuals, they had the total package.

The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...

To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

Annie Clark displays a remarkable facility for change, creating constantly morphing songs contained within a shifting panoply of modes, voices, and styles, cutting delicate, glittering pop with forceful fuzz and raunchy, preening guitar work. A multi-instrumentalist with a history of institutional training and anonymous backing-band work, she retains the guitar as her signature instrument and most potent tool, lacerating otherwise divine music with down-and-dirty grit, eyes heavenward and feet muddy.
The gradual expansion of sounds and textures occurring across her seven solo albums as St. Vincent has been accompanied by an inverse sense of simplification, the fine-tuning of music that’s grown less theatrical and more precise, imagery and language filed down to a sharp point. To celebrate the release of her latest release, All Born Screaming, we’ve ranked all eight of the musician’s albums, including her one-off collaboration with David Byrne.

The seventh album that singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark has released as St. Vincent teems with the kind of visceral imagery that sticks with you long after her songs fade out. There’s a “hungry little flea” ready to infect your “warm body,” a predator on the street turning aggression into an evil blues promise, a sink that runs red, a head that won’t stop banging, a dream that ends in hell. “I feel like graffiti on a urinal,” she sings. Hey, we’ve all been there.
Clark’s music has always been fearlessly intimate.

“This revolution isn’t fun,” Annie Clark sings toward the end of All Born Screaming. That lyric might be an apt descriptor for St. Vincent’s seventh studio album—if it wasn’t such a thrill. The album finds Clark at her most fragile and ferocious, seeking beauty among the waste and wreckage of 21st-century life. Itself a beautifully ugly thing, All Born Screaming is a visceral examination of art and nature when both are pushed to the brink.
The ominously titled opening track, “Hell Is Near,” begins with the sound of war drums. Amid a desolate landscape of empty cups, half-burned candles, and ash on linoleum, Clark finds and fixates on a single sign of life: a can full of marigolds. “Begin again,” she sings, her voice soaring. Just as jangly guitars attempt to lure us into a state of naïve optimism and psychedelic synths and swirling piano seem to promise hope,...

The cover will be available for purchase tomorrow (April 20th) as part of a joint 12-inch Record Store Day exclusive vinyl, but you can stream it now below.
Byrne’s take on the song retains the tribal drums of the original, but adds a healthy dose of brass that sets it apart alongside his maudlin vocals. The result feels more celebratory than Paramore’s version, in which Hayley Williams’ sarcastic delivery gives away the reality check theme of the lyrics.

“The band told me that their song ‘Hard Times’ was inspired by Talking Heads, so I learned it and recorded my version of their great song with a horn section,” Byrne recently shared on Twitter.

Ice Spice has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s upcoming film High and Low, as Variety reports. The project will serve as the rapper’s acting debut.
Announced in February, Lee’s High and Low is an English-language remake of Akria Kurosawa’s 1963 original, which itself was a loose adaptation of Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, and is set to star Denzel Washington and feature Jeffery Wright. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, with 2006’s Inside Man being their most recent meeting. A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures are developing and producing the project, while Lee and Alan Fox penned the script.
Though there is not yet a release date for the project, it has officially begun production. Once complete, A24 is set to distribute the film theatrically, followed by a global launch on AppleTV+, as Apple Original Films has partnered as a co-financier.

Prepare to feast. Or dance. This week’s streaming debuts include two visually sumptuous films that will whet your Easter-weekend appetite.
The contender to watch this week: “The Taste of Things“
France lost out on an Oscar nomination when the country’s selection committee chose Trần Anh Hùng‘s savory romance about a venerable chef (Benoît Magimel) and a gifted cook (Juliette Binoche) instead of eventual Best Picture nominee “Anatomy of a Fall.” But even if the movie didn’t make the Best International Feature Film category, it earned an immediate spot in the culinary canon. Like the documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” last year’s other great food movie, “The Taste of Things” is kitchen porn. In the warmly lit countryside, the gourmands prepare veal loins, roasted vegetables, baked Alaska, and the creamiest omelet you’ve ever seen. Select theaters are still showing the film, but it’s newly available on VOD.

Nelly Furtado shined in silver while performing onstage at the 2024 Juno Awards at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last weekend.
Furtado stunned in a crop top costume that had butterfly wings and a turtleneck top with short shorts. She held the mic wearing silver gloves.
Furtado, who was the host of the show, made five costume changes throughout the night, including a maroon sequinned dress, a black-and-white number with tassels and a strapless red gown with cut-outs and and silver rivets.
The “Promiscuous” singer performed with other artists with a color guard team for a segment promoting Contemporary Color, a new film by David Byrne about color guard groups. She sang “World Premiere” with Ventures during the performance.

In January, A24 Music shared Paramore’s cover of “Burning Down the House” as the lead single from their forthcoming Talking Heads tribute album. Now, another teaser single from the compilation has arrived: Lorde’s cover of “Take Me to the River.”
Originally written by Al Green, “Take Me to the River” was a bit of an unlikely Talking Heads cut, since David Byrne was apprehensive about recording a cover. Nonetheless, the band’s 1978 version made it onto their album More Songs About Buildings and Food, and has since become a beloved slice of their inventive sound.
Lorde has accompanied her cover with a lengthy note in which she reminisces about her first time hearing Talking Heads and the impact it had on her creatively. You can read it in full below.

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

A 300-seat theater on Southeast Division Street in Portland with a curious past is giving notable talents such as David Byrne and Ruth E. Carter a new stage on which to tell their stories: the Tomorrow Theater. The venue, which is part of the Portland Art Museum’s film-and-new-media Center for an Untold Tomorrow (Pam Cut), features a cinema and creative hub aimed at challenging conventional forms of storytelling, providing a platform for artists to connect with audiences in fresh ways.
About a year ago, when the project was in its early stages, Amy Dotson, director of Pam Cut and inaugural curator of film and new media at the Portland Art Museum, says she began to sense a trend from multimedia artists within her community — they no longer wanted to be siloed into one role such as filmmaker, podcaster or animator. The solution to this could be the development of a new venue,...

To call Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus a concert film would be correct and also drastically inadequate. What unfolds onscreen is no mere performance, no mere gesture, but a face-to-face between presence and absence. Beginning its theatrical run just before the one-year anniversary of Sakamoto’s death from cancer, at 71, the handsome film is a testament to the artistic spirit and, above all, an act of love — by the performer, who was facing mortality and thinking of legacy, and by the director, Neo Sora, who is Ryuichi Sakamoto’s son.
The performances captured in Opus were filmed over a week in September 2022, at a studio in Tokyo’s Nhk Broadcasting Center that Sakamoto believed offers the finest acoustics in Japan. He and Sora embarked on this project while Sakamoto was still well enough to perform. Other than the unseen filmmakers, there is no audience. Alone at a Yamaha grand, a bright...

More than a year after the death of David Crosby, the music he made with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash will be saluted in a tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall this spring.
Set for May 13, the show — simply titled “The Music of Crosby, Stills and Nash” — will present interpretations of both group and solo songs by an eclectic lineup, including genre-fluid singer Yola; classic rock visionary Todd Rundgren; singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin, Rickie Lee Jones, and Aoife O’Donovan; indie rockers Iron & Wine and Real Estate; and jam-rock vanguard Grace Potter.

Miley Cyrus recently performed a powerhouse rendition of Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” during a stripped-down set at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.
No stranger to covers of iconic songs, the pop star began her version of “Psycho Killer” with alternative lyrics before launching into the track’s chorus. Watch a clip of the performance below, followed by the original song.
The live cover comes after it was announced in January that Cyrus will be involved in an upcoming tribute album version of Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense from A24. The 16-track project will see artists including Paramore (who already released their cover of “Burning Down the House”), Lorde, and The National covering songs from the band’s soundtrack to their 1984 concert film, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

A new Spike Lee Joint is in the works that will reunite the director with Denzel Washington. Apple Original Films is partnering with A24 on “High and Low,” an English-language adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa crime film of the same name.
“High and Low” marks the first time Washington and Lee will work together since 2006’s “Inside Man.” It will be their fifth film together in addition to “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” and “He Got Game.”
The project also brings back together Washington and Todd Black, who produced “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Equalizer” films. Washington previously starred in another Apple and A24 film, Joel Coen’s 2022 “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which netted Denzel his 10th Oscar nomination.
Production on “High and Low” will start in March. A24 plans to release the film theatrically before it streams on Apple TV+.
