NATPE, under new management after encountering turbulence during the pandemic, has appointed a new advisory board and is firming up plans for the return of its signature U.S. conference next January in Miami.
The conference organizer was rescued out of bankruptcy at the start of 2023 by Brunico, the Canadian company behind events like the Realscreen Summit and Banff World Media Festival. The flagship NATPE conference, rooted in Miami over the past decade-plus, had managed to weather massive industry disruptions over nearly six decades but couldn’t survive Covid. The 11th-hour decision to cancel the 2022 edition due to the Omicron wave left NATPE on the hook for hefty fees to hotel operators and vendors, prompting management to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last October.

Exclusive: It’s a tough time to be a mid-sized unscripted production company right now.
A slow-down of greenlights amid cost cutting within all of the major media conglomerates, and seemingly no bump from the writers and actors strike despite what many were expecting, has led to doom and gloom across the non-scripted sector.
This has led to many companies having to undergo layoffs. Deadline understands that companies including Bunim/Murray, Half-Yard Productions and Propagate Content have all cut staff recently and more are expected to follow suit. ITV America-backed High Noon Entertainment informed its local production staff in Denver that due to production cycles, the number of workers contracted when shows weren’t in production would be reduced. We hear Hot Snakes Media is in a similar situation.
“It’s the toughest time to be in unscripted that I can remember,” one unscripted producer told Deadline.

A+E Networks has tapped Elaine Frontain Bryant and Eli Lehrer to take on expanded roles for the network as former Lifetime EVP and head of programming Amy Winter announced her exit on Wednesday. Move is the latest in a series of consolidations in basic cable as the linear business faces continued declines.
Winter joined Lifetime in 2020, having previously worked at Discovery and later Up TV as exec VP and Gm. At Lifetime, Winter filled a gig that had been vacant since Liz Gateley exited in 2018. Now that job will once again be retired as Frontain Bryant takes on oversight of all of Lifetime and Lmn programming in addition to her current role overseeing original programming for the flagship A&e brand.
Winter revealed in a memo to staff that she’s “decided to embark on a new path” that will combine “my passion for the creative aspects of entertainment with the business side of our industry.

A+E Networks is undergoing a significant executive shuffle with news that Lifetime brass Amy Winter and Tanya Lopez are both departing the media company.
Their exits mark an even bigger gig for one of the company’s top programming executives. Elaine Frontain Bryant, the longtime EVP and head of programming at flagship channel A&e, will now take on oversight of all Lifetime and Lmn (Lifetime Movie Network) programming — including all both networks’ lucrative original telepic offerings. Eli Lehrer, who oversees programming for The History Channel, has simultaneously added A+E Networks’ Music Services division to his plate. Both Frontain Bryant and Lehrer report directly to A+E Networks president of programming Rob Sharenow and will continue to do so.

Prince Andrew’s secrets are set to be uncovered, again, this time on A&e.
The network is launching Secrets of Prince Andrew, from Fulwell 73’s Bitachon365 and Candle Media, on August 21.
The documentary special will explore the British Royals’ scandal-plagued life, including the disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in November 2019 that shook the monarchy to its core.
It is the latest U.S. documentary about Prince Andrew, after Peacock launched Banished last year. Netflix is also dramatizing the story for a movie with Gillian Anderson.
That car-crash interview, which forensically examined the Duke’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and his paramour Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of child sex trafficking and other offenses.
During the interview the Prince said that he regretted continuing to associate with Epstein after the financier pled guilty to soliciting underage sex in 2008. However, the fact that he offered no apology to Epstein’s victims caused uproar and global headlines.

Netflix has released the trailer for the Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton-produced documentary “In Her Hands,” a feature about Afghanistan’s youngest mayor and her struggle to survive under Taliban rule after Western forces withdrew from the region.
The film chronicles Zarifa Ghafari’s journey from becoming Maidan Shahr’s first and only female mayor at age 26 to the devastation her nation faced when the Taliban reclaimed power.
For two years, directors Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen followed Ghafari as she is forced to make difficult choices to protect her people and herself. In one harrowing sequence, Ghafari receives a final warning to leave the region or else risk an assassination attempt – which she ends up narrowly surviving.
The trailer also covers Ghafari’s fight for women’s education, which she describes as “the key to a country’s development.”

A&e is heading to court, live.
The cable network has ordered Court Night Live, a reality series that will bring live trials to television.
The series comes from Big Fish Entertainment, the company behind controversial series Live Pd. Although it will air on Wednesday nights at 9pm, starting August 10, rather than on Friday and Saturday nights, Court Night Live appears to be the network’s spiritual successor to live cops series.
Summer Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
Deadline revealed that Live Pd, which was one of the highest rated series on cable, was canceled in June 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s death and after a controversy that video allegedly captured by the Live Pd crew of the death of Javier Ambler during a police stop had been destroyed.
A Live Pd successor On Patrol: Live recently premiered to strong numbers on Reelz.

Having canceled “Live P.D.” in 2020, A&e is returning to the live docu-reality TV space — but this time, the network is trading order for law. A&e is set to launch “Court Night Live,” from former “Live Pd” producers Big Fish Entertainment, next Wednesday, August 10 at 9 p.m. Et.
“Court Night Live” will operate under a similar format to “Live Pd,” featuring hosts as they shift from multiple cities to watch live action as it takes place — but this time via “pop-up courtrooms” in Philadelphia, Tampa, and Chicago. The show is hosted by Vinnie Politan and TV vet Judge Greg Mathis, while retired Judge Vonda Evans will provide analysis.

A&e and WWE are expanding their original programming partnership in a multi-year deal calling for more wrestler-themed episodes of Biography as well as new series WWE Rivals.
In all, more than 130 new hours of programming are expected to result from the teaming. For both parties, it extends a mutually beneficial relationship with A&e. The cable network does not carry WWE bouts live (NBCUniversal’s USA and Peacock have the rights to weekly franchises Raw and SmackDown). Even so, themed programming enables A&e to benefit from the wrestling circuit’s popularity and ubiquity and provides WWE with yet another media home.
The outcome thus far has been positive. A Biography installment focused on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin last year drew 1.06 million viewers, the highest rating for the franchise in 16 years.
Programming produced via the partnership will air exclusively on A&e linear and digital platforms and will be...
