The BBC has set its election night coverage for the July 4 poll as broadcasters battle to secure debates with Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer as soon as possible.
Established presenters Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie will helm the BBC’s coverage in six weeks time, replacing Huw Edwards, who resigned from the BBC last month following a scandal involving his allegedly paying a young person for explicit images.
Kuenssberg, who hosts a topical Sunday show, and newsreader Myrie, will “bring insight, experience – and perhaps a little wit” alongside BBC political editor Chris Mason, according to the BBC, whose announcement on the coverage was always expected today.
Others set to feature on the night include Reeta Chakrabarti and Jeremy Vine analyzing results with the famous ‘swingometer’, Kirsty Wark, Fiona Bruce, Victoria Derbyshire, Naga Munchetty, Nick Watt and Alex Forsyth. Nick Robinson and Rachel Burden will be on the radio and Martin Geissler,...

Exclusive: The BBC is actively weighing whether it should replace Huw Edwards as the anchor of its flagship election night show amid continued uncertainty over the presenter’s future.

Deadline understands that the BBC is in the early stages of planning for a significant UK general election, which could usher in a new government after 13 years of Conservative rule.

Senior BBC management has been accused of fostering a “toxic culture” from the “Dg-down” in a letter criticizing the closure of its 99-year-old choir.
The co-directors of BBC Singers, the BBC choir that’s facing the axe, made the claim in a letter to BBC Chair Richard Sharp.
The decision to close the near-century-old choir has been met with major opposition and is one of several crises currently engulfing the BBC. The BBC says it is in consultation with the Musician’s Union over the plan as an online petition criticizing it tops 100,000 signatures and another signed by 700 composers was sent to BBC Director General Tim Davie.
Among the damning claims levelled by BBC Singers Acting Co-Directors Jonathan Manners and Rob Johnston is that a “recurring narrative of toxic culture now exists at the BBC, reflected in the working environment from the Director General downwards.”

James Acaster has responded to rumours that he will replace Matt Lucas as the new host of The Great British Bake Off.
Following the announcement in December that the Little Britain star is stepping down from the baking competition series, many fans had begun to speculate who would replace him, with Acaster among the rumoured frontrunners.
Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday (11 March) alongside Prue Leith, stand-up comedian Acaster – who made a memorable appearance on the Stand Up to Cancer celebrity edition in 2019 – addressed his rumoured involvement.
“No-one’s spoken to me about it and rightly so,” he said.

The BBC’s Question Time host has stepped down from her role with a leading domestic violence charity after being criticized for defending Boris Johnson’s father from accusations that he is a “wife beater.”
In one of a long line of controversies that has befallen the corporation over the past few days, Fiona Bruce clarified during Friday’s Question Time that the former Prime Minister’s father Stanley Johnson had “not commented publicly” on accusations that he had broken his wife’s nose, while stating that “friends of his have said it was a one off.” The comments came during a Question Time conversation about domestic violence.
Bruce, who also presents the BBC News at Ten, was hit with a volley of criticism for trivializing domestic violence by stepping in to defend Johnson from one of the panellists’ accusations that he is a “wife beater,” and, while she said...

The BBC comms department must be reeling this morning after a nightmare 48 hours which saw it firefighting battles on several fronts.
The Corporation’s primetime Saturday night football show Match of the Day will air this weekend without any host, pundits or commentators, after its main presenter Gary Lineker – the BBC’s highest earner on a £1.35million ($1.62m) salary – was taken off air for sending controversial tweets about the government’s migration policy.
After a catalogue of pundits and commentators stood down in solidarity with Lineker, and other presenters said they wouldn’t be appearing, the BBC decided to air the show with just highlights packages. But the row rumbles on, with the spectacle of BBC News journalists door-stepping the Director-General for comments about another BBC presenter.
If America is wondering who is @GaryLineker and what is this huge row playing out in the UK….

Updated: BBC staff will stage their first 24-hour strike from 11Am on March 15, which has been timed to coincide with the UK’s government’s Budget. The National Union of Journalists (Nuj) has confirmed that the Coronation and Eurovision are also targets for industrial action.
Michelle Stanistreet, Nuj general secretary, said: “This emphatic result demonstrates the strength of feeling amongst BBC members and their determination not to stand by and see local radio output dismantled. I would urge the BBC to take stock and meaningfully engage so that we can come to a solution that acknowledges the vital role that quality, relevant and genuinely local news plays in our public service broadcaster.”

Exclusive: BBC insiders are saying it is inevitable that UK staff will stage their first major walkout in more than a decade as they protest over content cuts.
Employees at the broadcaster are furious at proposals to scale back local television and radio programming across the country and believe it is only a matter of time before they will have a mandate for strike action.
Should staff down tools, they will join a long list of workers launching industrial action around the UK, in what has been dubbed as a new “winter of discontent” following similar mass walkouts in 1979.
BBC employees completed a consultative strike ballot last week over the corporation’s plan to make nearly 50 roles redundant across its local services. Radio content is being cut, while the BBC has axed We Are England, a regional documentary TV show.
Members of the National Union of Journalists indicated that they would overwhelmingly support strike action.

Queen Elizabeth II lived a remarkable life – but not everyone knows she made time to watch TV too.
The Royal Family announced that the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday (8 September), aged 96.
In the wake of her death, fans are remembering the Queen’s rather eclectic taste in television.
According to reports, the Queen received selected shows from the BBC, who would occasionally add in unrequested items they thought she may enjoy.
Other reports have suggested that she once asked that a Doctor Who DVD box set be sent to Balmoral, and that she told actor Peter Sallis that she loved Last of the Summer Wine.
She also visited the set of EastEnders in 2001.
It would seem that even royals aren’t above a hate-watch either, as she is said to have once commented on police procedural series The Bill: “I don’t like The Bill but I just can’t help watching it.

Amol Rajan has been announced as the new presenter of University Challenge.
On Tuesday (16 August), Jeremy Paxman revealed that he’d be stepping down from his role as host after 28 years, ending his reign as the longest-serving current quizmaster on British television.
Currently the BBC’s media editor, Rajan was the editor of The Independent from 2013 to 2016.
In a statement, Rajan said: “Being asked to host my favourite TV programme is dream-come-true territory. I have watched University Challenge obsessively for years, addicted to its high standards, glorious title music, and inspirational contestants.
“It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about young people, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the sofa.”
Rajan initially joined The Independent in August 2007. Before becoming the editor in June 2013, he moved around the publication in the roles of news reporter,...

The BBC has published a list of its highest-earning TV and radio stars, revealing that sports presenter Gary Lineker remains the UK broadcaster’s most valuable piece of talent.
Match Of The Day presenter Lineker held the top spot for a third year, despite his salary falling £400,000 from £1.75M in 2020 to £1.36 million in the year to March 2021, according to the BBC’s annual report published on Tuesday.
BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball was the highest-earning female star, taking home £1.13M — though this figure only partially reflects a 28% pay cut she volunteered for last year. Ball, who hosts Radio 2’s flagship breakfast show, now earns £980,000 a year.

Question Time is as stoic a British institution as red letterboxes. Having graced the BBC for more than 40 years, presenters have come and gone, but the format has remained resolutely familiar: a weekly forum in which a studio audience scrutinizes a panel of those in power. But that was until coronavirus came along.

The first same-sex dance on Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC version of Dancing With The Stars, sparked nearly 200 complaints earlier this month from viewers who indicated they were offended.
The routine between professional dancers Johannes Radebe and Graziano di Prima was broadcast on November 3 as part of Strictly Come Dancing: The Results, in which a celebrity is voted off the show.
The performance compelled 189 people to register their dissatisfaction with the BBC, according to a complaints report published last week. The reason given by the BBC: “Offensive to feature two men dancing as a pair.”
The BBC is yet to feature a same-sex couple competing in the competition, but said it was proud of the routine between Radebe and di Prima. A spokesman said: “Strictly Come Dancing is an inclusive show and is proud to have been able to facilitate the dance between Johannes and Graziano during the professionals’ dance.

If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the gates of Buckingham Palace, your prayers have been answered! In news more surprising than why Queen Elizabeth has been rocking so many pairs of chic sunglasses lately, back in the day the Queen, Prince Philip, and their four kids were the stars of their very own reality show. Yes, you read that right! It was the swinging 1960s and, in a bid to show the public just how normal and down-with-the-times they were, the Windsors commissioned a 105-minute documentary aptly called Royal Family. The film also coincided with Prince Charles' investiture as the Prince of Wales and was released to celebrate the milestone. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) According to The Queen's Speech author Ingrid Seward, at the time it was described as "the most fantastic piece of eavesdropping of all time." Nothing was off-limits — from the Queen, Prince Philip,...

While walking inside the Un to deliver a passionate address persuading member states to take appropriate legal action to stop Isis, Amal Clooney was photographed by the paparazzi. It didn't take long before the photos popped up online, but instead of seeing headlines accompanying the photos in praise of her speech, the attention was aimed primarily at her baby bump. Inefficiency. It’s a criticism often levelled at the BBC by a certain species of rapacious vulture who sees the corporation not as the lustrous national gem it is, but as an unjust barrier to the extent to which they’re able to feather their own nests. The BBC is full of waste, they caw. The BBC must be more efficient!
If any of the vultures had the nous to watch BBC Two at 10pm on a Tuesday night for the past few weeks, they’d have been delighted. Well, not delighted.

She’s thinking pink!
Amal Clooney stepped out in New York City Wednesday night, rocking the traditionally feminine hue from head to (almost) toe.
Wearing the dark-pink Bottega Veneta Cruise Collection Velvet Devore dress with a brick-like pattern over her growing baby bump, Clooney finished her look with the Bottega Veneta Cruise Collection Cashmere Overcoat in dusty rose, matching Bottega Veneta Roma handbag, pink lipstick and black pumps.
The international human rights attorney, 39, is in town to visit the United Nations, where she will speak Thursday afternoon to encourage the group to investigate genocidal claims against the Isis terrorist group.

"There's a lot of my work that takes place behind closed doors that is not ever seen," she said. "I think if there are more people who now understand what's happening about the Yazidis and Isis, and if there can be some action that results from that, that can help those clients, then I think it's a really good thing to give that case...

The human rights attorney and wife of George Clooney is calling for the Un to investigate allegations of genocide against the terrorist group. On Tuesday, she discussed the decision with Fiona Bruce on BBC News, which showed a haunting reel of Isis atrocities before the beginning of the interview.
