The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

Stephen King once wrote that the "last reason for reading horror: it's a rehearsal for death. It's a way to get ready." I agree with that statement and believe it applies to watching horror, as well as reading it. Sure, there's something to be said about how watching people scream and die in terrible ways probably satisfies the morbid curiosity that resides in the more primordial parts of our brains. But King's quote serves as a more profound (and socially acceptable) explanation for our attraction to the stories about fictional characters shuffling off this mortal coil, and how they allow us to come into contact with the great beyond.
From a safe distance, that is.
However, for an unlucky number of actors and film crew members, death got a little too close during the making of several horror movies, whether it was freak accidents, production team negligence, or tyrannical directors pushing their crew to extremes.

When it arrived in cinemas exactly 45th years ago in 1976, The Omen was a big hit. Much was made of the religious prophecy element of the film—indeed, lots of people still think bits supposedly from the Book of Revelation are real.
“When the Jews return to Zion and a comet rips the sky and the Holy Roman Empire rises; then you and I must die. From the eternal sea he rises, creating armies on either shore, turning man against brother, ’til man exists no more” is pure fiction, from the mind of writer David Seltzer.
Following soon after The Exorcist in 1973, which was a massive commercial and critical success and was nominated for 10 Oscars, The Omen was seen by some as a bit of a cash-in, with both films featuring devilish kids, the perversion of the relationship between parents and children, as well as religious and demonic paranoia.

As Summer came to an end in 1975, production began on one of the more well-known entries in the horror film canon. A chilling portrayal that depicts the foretold arrival of the Antichrist and the inevitable end of times, The Omen came hot off the success of The Exorcist, a frightening and devilish adaptation that had changed the landscape of the movie genre forever.
The Exorcist had been a monstrous hit. To this day, it ranks as one of the top-grossing horror films of all time, having earned over $232 million in revenue. It also earned a staggering 10 Academy Award nominations, which included best picture, best actress, best actor, best supporting actress, and best director. With this kind of success, it seemed like The Omen would be a surefire hit; producer Harvey Bernhard had counted on that. What he might not have expected, though, was the strange set of occurrences that would...

When I was growing up I used to go to auditions for movies, plays, and TV shows all the time. It was always a thrilling, yet nerve-wracking experience. I loved the rush of it though. But, in all the auditions that I was a part of, I never had anyone get up and walk out in the middle of it! Now, imagine what that would have been like if that person was Steven Spielberg!
That’s exactly what happened to Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings) during his audition for The Goonies. He was already nervous to begin with and it turned out to be a very disheartening experience. While talking to Michael Rosenbaum on the Inside of You podcast, Astin explained that as he was being led back to the room where he would audition, his nervousness hit a peak when Steven Spielberg’s personal assistant told him...

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

Damien: Omen II (1978)
Written by: Harvey Bernhard, Stanley Mann, Mike Hodges
Directed by: Don Taylor
Cast: William Holden (Richard Thorn), Lee Grant (Ann Thorn), Jonathan Scott-Taylor (Damien Thorn), Sylvia Sidney (Aunt Marion), Robert Foxworth (Paul Buher), Lance Henriksen (Seargent Neff), Meshach Taylor (Dr. Kane)
I know it may be a bit peculiar to review a sequel without doing a retrospective of a whole series of films, but I actually have never seen this one. I watched it and the third movie “The Final Conflict” with Sam Neill back to back. While I haven’t seen the fourth entry, I can say this is probably the last one that has the feel of the original. I can compare this to “Jaws 2”. While not as powerful as the original, it still seems like it exists in the same world. Also like all the “Jaws” sequels after part two,...

‘Cursed productions’ are not exclusive to horror pictures. But, it’s typically horror films that garner the most attention for tumultuous circumstances surrounding their filming. At one point, people seemed to like the idea of those involved with horror movies being condemned for their participation in the devil’s work. But, these days, many people would, attribute a cursed production to nothing more than bad luck, negligence, unfortunate circumstances, or a combination of the above factors. Films from The Wizard of Oz to Superman have spawned rumors of a curse associated with their production. But, a lot of people argue that there is a slightly less fantastical explanation for films that endured a particularly turbulent shoot.
Despite the fact that people try to tell us that there is no such thing as a ‘cursed production’, we thought it would be interesting to reminisce on some of the most notorious ‘cursed productions’. As a disclaimer,...
