- The youngest of three children born to Sandy, a provisions merchant and Mary , While at technical college he joined Mexborough Theatre Guild and Drama Society making his first appearance at 16 as Ralph in The Night of the Burning Vessel., He left college in 1950 to work for his father until he was called up for National Service in the RAF as senior aircraftsman until he was demobbed in 1955 when he decided to try the theatre and became an ASM at Sheffield Repertory Theatre where he met and married his wife to be, Mary in 1959, He got the odd small role until he was spotted and asked to join the Bristol Old Vic in 1965.
