Three-fourth of his 88-year-long life was spent in acting and of these, six and a half decades, over half, had Dev Anand playing the lead (romantic) role, even as his peers and even several of his leading ladies had moved on or out. In the process, Dev Anand ended up being paired against at least three generations of heroines, if not four, as he transitioned from his early days where his female co-lead was the bigger star to a time when most actresses were keen on working with him as he sauntered from success to success with that charming demeanour and the winning smile.
While most of his early heroines, say, Kamla Kotnis, who was cast against him in his debut “Hum Ek Hai” (1946), Kamini Kaushal, the heroine of his first hit “Ziddi” (1948), Khursheed Bano or Nimmi or Shakila will only be familiar to hardcore film buffs or movie historians,...

In his youth, he had gone from his home in Gurdaspur to Amritsar to get medicines for his ailing mother. To quench his thirst, he ordered a glass of sugarcane juice from a stall near the Golden Temple. When the vendor took a closer look at him, he exclaimed that Dev Anand had the sun on his forehead, foretelling greatness.
The prediction did come true Dev Anand did become a star that burnt bright across an over six-decade-long career.
With his undeniable charm, fast diction, the slight lopsided gait, trademark nodding to add emphasis, the winning winsome smile, and the flamboyant sartorial style, Dev Anand sparkled in a career that began before Independence and lasted into the second decade of the 21st century.
Included in the pantheon of the top three heroes of Hindi cinema in the 1950s, he not only outpaced his peers Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor, who did around 70-odd films each,...

Actress Wamiqa Gabbi’s character in ‘Jubilee’ is a tribute to actresses from that golden era, like Madhubala, Nargis, and others.
Wamiqa said: “I play the role of Niloufer Qureshi, an aspiring actress through the 1940’s and 50’s. She is unapologetically ambitious and willing to go the lengths to make it big. My research was completely based on all the actresses from that era, like Madhubala, Nargis, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rahman, Geeta Bali, Mumtaz, Mala Sinha.”
“I was extremely conscious of not imitating any of them but to create something of my own. This is my little homage to them to embrace their grace and perhaps try to recreate the memories of that elegant period of cinema.”
The series stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aparshakti Khurana, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ram Kapoor in pivotal roles. The series is created and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane.

Tribhanga (Netflix)
Starring Kajol,Tanvi Azmi,Mithila Palkar,Kunaal Roy Kapur,Vaibhav Tatwawaadi
Written & Directed by Renuka Shahane
Just like life, Tribhanga is somewhat off-kilter, a little askew, at times uneven and even patchy. But the story of three generations of women from one family, spirited, unorthodox, unfettered, holds together, moles, warts and all. Tribhanga is a fiercely original film, though cinephiles would like to see distinct shades of Ingmar Bergman’s imperishable classic Autumn Sonata in Renuka Shahane’s striking debut film. But that, like much in life, is only an illusion.
The film’s scenes are ignited by the presence of Kajol. The fieriest actress on this side of Fearless Nadia and Geeta Bali, Kajol brings to Tribhanga a kind of unrehearsed ferocity that is at once intimidating, intriguing, and irresistible.
Strangely there aren’t that many confrontation scenes between mother Tanve Azmi and daughter Kajol. Maybe Ms.

For her role as Priyanka Gandhi in The Accidental Prime Minister, Aahana sported short hair and a simplistic look -- diametrically different from what the audience had seen so far of her in a show like "Yudh" or a film like Lipstick Under My Burkha. She feels the role will help the film industry look at her differently.
"People often look at you (me) as a girl next door, and not sometimes as a character. And I think what is interesting is that because there was a different look, and a different hairdo, I think now they will be open to giving me a different get-up altogether."
"I don't know why do they (filmmakers) get scared to make women look different. We don't even live in a country where everyone looks the same," Aahana told.
She finds it unfortunate how all the actresses today look the same.
"There's no difference from one to the other.

Aditya's mother the legendary Geeta Bali will be played by Vidya Balan.
Speaking on the project for the first time Aditya says, "No one has approached me about information on my mother on this film. We know nothing about it except what has appeared in the public domain. Which is fine. I am sure the makers are capable of doing justice to the film. But I could have told them so much about Geetaji. No one knew her the way I do. I was only 9 when she suddenly died. But she left an indelible impression on me and my sister."
Aditya wonders which aspect of his mom's life the film will touch on.
