Nunsploitation appears to be alive and well in 2024 with this week’s arrival of Immaculate, a convent-set horror movie that borrows heavily from ’70s Italian horror, the peak era of the exploitation film. Nunsploitation, a subgenre of exploitation films that hit its prime in the late ’70s and early ’80s, often features nuns behaving badly. More importantly, nunsploitation films explore themes of sexual or religious repression, frequently unleashing scathing critiques of the Church through blasphemous imagery and nuns behaving badly.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to nunsploitation horror. These taboo-shattering horror movies have more on their mind than their low-budget exploitation origins suggest.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Alucarda – Cultpix
Directed and co-written by Juan López Moctezuma, this English-language Mexican horror film stars Tina Romero as Alucarda, who was raised by nuns at a repressive Catholic convent.

So, we’re getting into the Halfway-to-Halloween celebrations earlier with streaming picks dedicated to the horror that unleashes demonic mayhem. Some bring the laughs, while others get under your skin and refuse to leave.

What is it? Two old college friends cross paths as adults and beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.
Why see it? Onur Tukel’s latest is also his best thanks in part to the lead performances by Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. They do a good job of manipulating our sympathies and concerns ensuring that our loyalties shift from act to act. Themes of female friendships, class distinctions, and redemption run through alongside a satirical look at modern life, and there’s a terrifically wicked streak throughout. Funny, smart, and brutal are all apt descriptors for this cynical look at our violent selves.

What is it? A professional woman and her oddball father dance around their complicated relationship, both in and out of costumes.
Why buy it? Family dysfunction is a longtime staple in cinema, but no film this year captured it with such humor, warmth, and wisdom as Maren Ade’s third feature. Even at 162 minutes our time with Ines and her oddball father feels far too short as their journey of discovery becomes one we don’t want to see end. South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan), Asia’s largest genre film fest, has announced 21 titles from 12 countries to be presented during the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (Naff) genre film project market.
Dubbed It Project, the market has in past years showcased films such as Arvin Chen’s Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? and Lisa Takeba’s Haruko’s Paranormal Laboratory, which have screened at festivals including Tribeca, Berlin and Rotterdam.
Naff will run July 19-22 during BiFan, which will run July 16-26. Previously known as PiFan, the fest changed its name earlier this year in belated accordance with the current system of Romanizing Korean names. Thus it now uses ‘Bucheon’ instead of ‘Puchon’ to indicate the pronunciation of the name of the satellite city of Seoul that hosts this fest.
Aside from arranging business meetings, Naff will hand out post-production awards and a total of KW66m ($59,300) in cash prizes.

Back in 1994, Italian filmmaker Mariano Baino crafted a tense and turbulent little feature called Dead Waters or sometimes Dark Waters. Stuffed full of Lovecraftian terror, the film hit the sweet spot of many horror fans that still champion it as one of the great genre indies. Yet, this film was overlooked by many horror fans, and I still see Dead Waters getting constant mentions of “rare must-see horror gem” lists.

It's no secret to anyone who knows me that I am a big fan of Scotland, and that I would move there in a heartbeat if we didn't have these dumb things called international borders. Edinburgh in particular is a breathtaking city that still has architectural remnants of the middle ages, with windy little cobbled streets, claustrophobic closes and even a castle atop the hill right in city centre.
It's also a city proud of its morbid history bodysnatchers Burke and Hare have a bar and a strip club named after them (not to mention a booklet made out of Burke's skin on display at the Royal College of Surgeons), a sprawling, noticably lumpy city park sits atop masses of graves left over from plague times, and the ghost-walk business is booming.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will again be offering its popular Scary Movies Film Series. And it’s not just any scary movies they’ll be showing. They’ve got classics, and they’ve got New York City premieres. They’ve even got Stuart Gordon’s live theater presentation of Nevermore starring Jeffrey Combs accompanying the screening of The Black Cat.
All right New Yorkers, check this out ... from October 27 to 31 Lincoln Center will present an ass-load of horror. Unfortunately, brevity is not one of their strong points so I’m going to sign off here and turn it over to the good folks of Lincoln Center to give you all the film titles and schedule. With NYC premieres of Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and Ti West’s The Innkeepers, along with a ton of other great titles, this is the film festival you don’t want to miss.

Following up on a previous story pertaining to some recent shake-ups surrounding Italy's first 3D film, Hidden, we recently heard from vacating director Mariano Baino regarding both his and Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni's departure from the film.
"Both Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni and I would like to clarify a couple of things regarding our involvement with Hidden 3D," says Baino. "I co-wrote the original screenplay with the amazingly talented Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni. Most people know her as a wonderfully gifted actress and painter, but she is also a very talented writer. We came up with a truly unique concept and wanted to make a genuinely disturbing, multi-layered movie. Unfortunately the producers decided to go in a completely different direction, and we decided to leave the project. No hard feelings. Stuff happens. Lesson learned. It was a labor of love for us, a project we spent years writing and developing. As artists, both of us...

It's always good to know that America isn't the only country that sometimes has trouble getting its shit together. Italy's first ever 3D feature film, Hidden 3D, has undergone a bit of a shake-up cast and crew wise, and we're here to keep you up to date as always.
According to Bloody Disgusting:
"Antoine Thomas stepped into the director's chair, replacing Mariano Baino (who wrote the screenplay, yet for some reason isn't being credited). Sean Clement ("Fringe"), Simonetta Solder, Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street), Jason Blicker, Bjanka Murgel have all been cast in the film now in post-production. The English-language horror/thriller is about an abandoned experimental medical center that harbors a deadly secret. It only becomes known when a restoration project begins. Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni (pictured below), who you might remember from Demons 2, Terror at the Opera and Dario Argento's The Phantom of the Opera,...

Looks as if the 3D craze is official in Italy. First we brought you the news about Italy's Turn of the Screw 3D (story here), and now word of Hidden 3D has come to light. Interestingly enough, they're both claiming to be the country's first three-dimensional film.
According to Screen Daily production is due to start soon on Hidden, an Italy-Canada co-production that will be filmed in English.
"The horror/thriller is about an abandoned experimental medical centre that harbours a deadly secret. It only becomes known when a restoration project begins."
Bloody Disgusting nailed down some casting news back in November, stating that Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni (pictured below; Demons 2, Terror at the Opera, Dario Argento's The Phantom of the Opera) will be writing and starring in the film for director Mariano Baino. She will play the role of Haley.

First revealed exclusively here on Bd back in November, production is due to officially start on Hidden 3D, the first Italian-made 3D feature, with principal photography getting underway in Canada later this month. The English-language horror/thriller is about an abandoned experimental medical center that harbors a deadly secret. It only becomes known when a restoration project begins. While this has yet to be reported, we're told Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni, who you might remember from Demons 2, Terror at the Opera and Dario Argento's The Phantom of the Opera, has been co-writing a new horror film with Mariano Baino (Dark Waters). Baino will also be getting behind the camera for Hidden 3D, which was developed as starring vehicle for Cataldi-Tassoni. She will play the role of Haley.
