While promoting Peacock’s John Wick spinoff series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, executive producer Basil Iwanyk acknowledges the elephant in the room: How does one explore the John Wick universe without the eponymous star — played by Keanu Reeves — himself?
“It’s hard to look at: Ok, why does a movie or franchise work?” Iwanyk, who’s worked on the entire John Wick franchise, told The Hollywood Reporter at a recent press junket. “There’s a million different ways to look at it, and you just really don’t know. Of course, there’s research and bullshit, but it’s something in your gut. This is a prequel in the ’70s that doesn’t have Keanu and John Wick in it. Will it work?”
“It was about the franchise and the health of the franchise and what attracts people to the franchise, as [much as] it was [about] telling a great story,...

With the success of the John Wick franchise, it was only a matter of time before we saw this impressive world expand. And now, audiences will get a closer look at The Continental for a special three-night event that begins this Friday, September 22nd. The new series, directed by Albert Hughes, focuses on a younger version of Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) and his brother Frankie (Ben Robson). Much like the feature films that inspired it, the exciting action and the fine collection of actors add yet another level to “The Continental: From the World of John Wick.” The cast includes Mishel Prada, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Nhung Kate, Jessica Allain, and many more. And in case you are wondering who is running the joint, that would be Mel Gibson as Cormac.

The "John Wick" films are action masterpieces, but let's face it: They're tightly focused on Mr. Wick and his battle against the High Table of assassins. With a world surrounding him that's enticingly rich, intriguingly layered, and ambiguously constructed, there's a wealth of possibility for other stories to be found within that world -- stories that have the potential to be just as exciting.
That's where Peacock's new three-night event series "The Continental: From the World of John Wick" comes in. Written by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, Ken Kristensen, and Shawn Simmons and directed by Charlotte Brändström (Night 2) and Albert Hughes (Nights 1 & 3), the series is set in 1970s New York City and follows a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) as he attempts to avenge his brother Frankie (Ben Robson) and take over the mysterious hotel full of assassins known as The Continental.

“The Sandman” is a “fascinating project” to work on, reveals costume designer Sarah Arthur in Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel. The Netflix series is based on the DC Comics written by Neil Gaiman, and stars Tom Sturridge as the titular supernatural character who goes by the names Lord Morpheus and Dream. “We covered everything” in terms of genres, Arthur tells us, from Victorian to contemporary to fantasy to horror, etc. “It was all intermingled in each episode, so it was a huge task but fantastic from a costume designer’s point of view.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The art of props and costumes can sometimes be an invisible one for viewers, only really noticeable when the team does something that feels wrong. The devil is in the detail—those small pieces that appear on the set, whether it’s a flagon appropriate to the 1600s or a vibrant costume that sets the tone of the scene. When everything comes together to create the right atmosphere, the props and costumes feel seamless, an enhancement of the world.
While their names might be unfamiliar, The Sandman costume designer Sarah Arthur and property master Gordon Fitzgerald have both worked on high-profile projects. Arthur has served as costume designer on such projects as Sherlock and A Discovery of Witches. Fitzgerald worked with The Sandman actor Gwendoline Christie as the property master on Game of Thrones, as well as on previous Neil Gaiman project Good Omens. “It...

Like the title of the next episode of The X-Files says, "Nothing Lasts Forever," and we're already coming to the final two installments of the eleventh season. While we'll have to wait and see if more new episodes await us in the future or if this really is the end for Mulder and Scully, a new trailer promises plenty of action, drama, romance, and family time in the final two episodes of season 11.

We’ve scoured the scenes of Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, to dig out its nerdy details. Spoilers ahead…
Warning: contains spoilers for The Abominable Bride.
If, by the time Sherlock special The Abominable Bride came around, your usually-shining powers of observation had been dulled by New Year’s indulgence, never fear.
We’ve hunted around the episode with (mostly) clear heads and stumbled upon a few fun titbits, from Wilder the Diogenes butler, to set design jokes, nods to Doyle’s original stories, Paget’s illustrations, previous Sherlock episodes and more…
1. This dilated pupil (we'd suggest Cumberbatch’s rather than Freeman’s?) is the first hint-in-hindsight that what’s to follow involves narcotics.
2. Both A Study In Pink and The Abominable Bride start with Watson waking up from a nightmare of his time in an Afghan war, centuries apart.
3. Joining the regular cast’s Victorian counterparts...

“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Into the Woods” and “Inherent Vice” are among the nominees for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, the CDG announced on Wednesday.
So is “Selma,” which ended a 0-for-5 drought and picked up its first guild nomination of the year.
The guild chooses nominees in three separate categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Fantasy Film. In recent years the Cdg has typically nominated three or four of the films that will go on to receive Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design – and in virtually every case, they’ve come...

The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.
