So Help Me Todd is showing different sides of Lyle this season—we just met his mother, played by the always fantastic Jenifer Lewis!—and Tristen J. Winger couldn’t be happier. “We get to see this romantic side of Lyle. We get to see a little bit of Lyle’s history to see why he is the way that he is, because a person like Lyle just doesn’t get involved in secret missions or in a CIA or the Nsa, and he isn’t a Mensa scholar. That doesn’t happen by accident, he’s not a genius on accident,” he tells TV Insider. So to see his history come in, to give us some insight into how he became who he is, and then also how he romances as well in his relationship with Alex [Vinessa Antoine] is a pleasure to play as well.” Below, Winger teases what else is ahead,...

Black Canadian content creators attending the inaugural Black Screen Office Symposium in Toronto on Tuesday showed both excitement and anxiety as the global entertainment business model faces unprecedented disruption.
Just as an industry reckoning after the murder of George Floyd led to more Black representation among Canadian industry gatekeepers and more direct federal government investment in Black creators, the impact of Hollywood shooting fewer originals and locally commissioned series in Canada, and with lower production budgets, is rippling across the business.
The impact on local broadcasters shrinking their local content slates as Canadians increasingly shift to streaming platforms and away from traditional cable TV subscriptions also plays a part as a weak advertising market undercuts overall linear TV revenues and artificial intelligence poses an existential threat everywhere.

Amanda Seyfried reflected on being cast as a mother at the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her new film “Seven Veils,” saying that “it seems like once I popped out a baby, I was just playing mothers.” However, the mom of two does feel the roles she’s been given have “become way richer.”
In “Seven Veils,” Seyfried plays Jeanine, a theater director who is forced to deal with repressed trauma as she prepares a production of the opera “Salome.” When asked if she related to the character, Seyfried said she sympathized with Jeanine’s struggles as a mother.
“In my career, it’s still a bit new to play a mother. It seems like once I popped out a baby, I was just playing mothers, and that’s Hollywood for you. But I do think that the roles have become way richer and definitely challenging in ways that...

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.

Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

Near the climax of Richard Strauss’ opera “Salome,” the title character performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for her stepfather, King Herod. The dance is done as a barter: In exchange, Herod will behead the man Salome loves so that she may kiss his lips. The Dance of the Seven Veils finds Salome swaying and whirling erotically with a set of scarves, landing somewhere between an object of sexual fascination for her onlookers and a lovestruck woman reaching for agency through movement.
“Seven Veils,” written and directed by Atom Egoyan (“The Sweet Hereafter”), follows an opera director who is staging a production of “Salome” and, like the tragic heroine, clashes with a series of men in her quest to recover a sense of control. Art and life are inextricably entangled in Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, a wildly ambitious, visually intoxicating reinterpretation of the Richard Strauss opera, Salome, that proves to possess almost as many layers as the Biblical princess’ famous dance routine.
After spending the past two and a half decades struggling to get his groove back following the 1997 success of The Sweet Hereafter, the filmmaker reconnects with his pet themes of alienation and family trauma, taking inspiration from his own revisionist staging of the opera, which he remounted for the Canadian Opera Company earlier this year. Using that production as a leap-off point, Egoyan interweaves a behind-the-scenes narrative involving a young director (Amanda Seyfried) who is challenged to put her own stamp on the oft-interpreted material while exorcising a number of personal demons in the process.

Amanda Seyfried has revealed that she will not be attending the world premiere of her film Seven Veils at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival amid the historic dual Hollywood strikes.
The actress took to Instagram on Saturday to share her appreciation for the Atom Egoyan-directed movie, writing, “I am So Proud of this movie and it hurts my heart not to stand next to the beautiful people who helped create this special film at our @tiff_net premiere next week.”
Seyfried noted that while the film was given a “wavier” by SAG-AFTRA to “promote this fully, magically independent Canadian movie,” it still “doesn’t feel right to head to the fest in light of the strike.”
She added, “I can’t wait to show you all Seven Veils when the time is right (and we’ve come to a fair agreement for actors and writers).”

Canadian director Atom Egoyan is bringing his latest movie, Seven Veils, to the Toronto Film Festival for a world premiere, with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role as a tortured opera director.

The Toronto International Film Festival has set the world premiere for a new film from one of Canada’s own, director Atom Egoyan.
Egoyan helms “Seven Veils,” which stars his “Chloe” actress Amanda Seyfried. When CBC drama “Diggstown” hit Canadian airwaves in 2019, star Vinessa Antoine became the first Black Canadian woman to lead a prime-time drama on network television. And while plenty of ink was spilled over that stat at the beginning, when the Floyd Kane-created series wraps its fourth and final season on Nov. 16, it does so not with a media bang, but a whimper.
So what happened?
“Diggstown” revolves around a corporate lawyer named Marcie Diggs (Antoine) who begins working at a legal-aid office after her aunt takes her own life. Over its 26-episode run, the drama tackled real inequities that exist in the Canadian legal system as well as sensitive themes including mental health in the Black community, Indian Day Schools, queer rights and queer representation. For the first three seasons, those stories took place in North Preston, Nova Scotia, home to Canada’s largest Black community by population — one...

The Jordan Ashford role was initially portrayed by Vinessa Antoine from March 14, 2014 to September 7, 2018. Henry took over the role from September 13, 2018 to September 13, 2021, when she announced that she felt it was time for her “to move on” from the series.
When we last saw Jordan, she was sent to a medical clinic in Albany, NY. With only one kidney, she was close to renal failure after a near-death experience. The character wasn’t killed off, however, so the door remained open for a return.
Harper’s first episodes will begin airing in March.
Harper most recently guest-starred on Hulu’s Dollface and Hacks on HBO Max.

Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.
Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

CBC has renewed Burden of Truth for a fourth season, with production to begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later this summer. Diggstown has been renewed for a third season with shooting set to begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2021.

Diggstown‘s Vinessa Antoine is set for a recurring role opposite Kyle Gallner in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series true-crime drama Interrogation. Co-created by Swedish writer-producer Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz, Interrogation is an original concept based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man (Gallner) was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. The series’ first nine episodes will be available to binge in any order with each episode structured around an interrogation. The multi-linear approach will give viewers the opportunity to follow their instincts and develop their own interpretations of the facts of the case and ultimately decide innocence or guilt. Antoine plays a street-smart diner waitress who becomes crucial in a decades-old murder investigation after becoming involved with the private investigator. Canadian born Antoine’s TV credits include Fox’s The Resident, Being Erica, Haven, Heartland, NCIS, Lucky 7 and General Hospital.

TV Insider reports that “Grey’s Anatomy” star Chandra Wilson will be visiting a different hospital soon. On August 6 she taped a guest appearance on the daytime soap opera “General Hospital.” Could she potentially win an Emmy in daytime after it eluded her in primetime? The Emmys honor guest stars now, so there could be a chance.
Wilson previously guested on “Gh” in 2014 as Tina Estrada, a patient of psychiatrist Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom). But this time she’ll play a brand new role: Dr. Linda Massey, who will counsel Stella (Vernee Watson), Jordan (Vinessa Antoine) and Curtis (Donnell Turner). Counseling will be a change of pace from her “Grey’s” role as Seattle Grace Hospital chief of surgery Miranda Bailey, whom the actress has played since that show premiered in 2005.
