In the last days of 2022, we learned that production had wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars: Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). The presence of Amplas and Cardille in this film seemed especially fitting since The Trip was filmed in Pennsylvania, not far from Romero’s beloved Pittsburgh. Nearly ten months later, The Trip is now ready to start making its way out into the world – and the premiere is going to be held at the Lindsay Theater in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on October 26th! In anticipation of the premiere, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

The Tom Savini episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Celebrity? video series (formerly known as Where in the Horror Are They Now) was Written and Narrated by Jessica Dwyer and Edited by Juan Jimenez. It was Produced by John Fallon and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Gore. The gore the merrier or so it seemed during the 70s and 80s. And throughout many a decade gorehounds love all the red splatter a screen can handle. And one of the best to give the gore all the more is Tom Savini. A master of splatter, an icon of special effects, and a director and actor too, Savini has been the inspiration for more filmmakers and effects artists than I can count and continues to do so. He’s also never stopped making monsters and mayhem either. Tom Savini is one of modern horrors legends and I think it’s...

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

Stars: John Amplas, Lincoln Maazel. Christine Forrest, Elyane Nadeau, Tom Savini, Sarah Venable, James, Roy, J. Clifford Forrest Jr. | Written and Directed by George A. Romero
George A. Romero is a name that is synonymous with the horror genre, and for good reason. His films, particularly his “Living Dead” series, have become icons of the genre and have influenced countless filmmakers. However, one of Romero’s lesser-known films, Martin, is just as worthy of recognition and analysis as his more famous works.
Martin tells the story of the titular character, played by John Amplas, who thinks – despite evidence to the contrary – he’s a vampire. Martin lives with his elderly cousin, Cuda (Lincoln Maazel), who buys into Martin’s belief that he is a cursed vampire and treats him accordingly. However, unlike the vampires of folklore and fiction, Martin does not possess any supernatural abilities. He must drug his victims...

The 1981 film Knightriders (watch it Here) isn’t a horror film, but comes from one of our all-time greatest genre film directors (and my personal favorite of the bunch), George A. Romero. It’s a brilliant, emotional dramatic film that also features some really cool extended motorcycle stunt sequences… and I’m glad to hear that the folks at Scare Flair Records are giving the score composed by Donald Rubinstein a vinyl release.
The vinyl is now available to order through ScareFlair.com. The site notes that the records are already in hand and will begin shipping out almost immediately.
Here’s some information on the Knightriders score vinyl release: This release comes with the complete score on X2LP inside a gatefold jacket, 11×11 Program of Events insert, exclusive liner notes by Composer Donald Rubinstein, classic artwork by Boris Vallejo, new artwork by Ghoulish Gary Pullin, and features some very...

Production recently wrapped on the psychedelic horror film The Trip, which stars an impressive line-up of genre icons and regulars. The cast includes Hannah Fierman (V/H/S/), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), John Amplas (George A. Romero’s Martin), and Lori Cardille (Romero’s Day of the Dead). Written and directed by Dean Jacobs, The Trip has been described as “Deliverance meets The Amityville Horror, with just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs!” Another description says its “one part haunted house story, one part slasher film”, and repeats the “just a dash of hallucinogenic drugs” line. Here’s the synopsis: Four childhood friends take a weekend trip to a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania. Expecting a relaxing weekend of excess, the group soon comes to find out, the house has something else planned.

The pseudo-vampire film Martin was George A. Romero‘s personal favorite of all the films he had made – and now Second Sight Films has brought the film to 4K Uhd! Copies can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight if you’re in the UK, but the company is not able to ship outside of the UK and Ireland. In the US, you can pre-order the release from Zavvi or Diabolik. 4K Uhd discs are region free, but the accompanying Blu-ray discs are locked to region B.
Written and directed by Romero, Martin has the following synopsis:
Young Martin is entirely convinced that he is an 84-year-old blood-sucking vampire. Without fangs or mystical powers, Martin injects women with sedatives and drinks their blood through wounds inflicted with razor blades. After moving to Braddock, Pennsylvania to live with his superstitious uncle, who also believes Martin is a vampire, Martin tries to prey...

The long, long, long-delayed Marvel superhero movie “Morbius” finally hit theaters earlier this year (and is now on Netflix), and it may very well introduce a whole new generation to vampire movies. At least, one would hope. The vampire subgenre has been at the forefront of horror for over 100 years, and the myths of undead creatures living off of human blood go back countless years further. The best vampire movies ever made are, mostly, incredibly varied. There’s a whole of lot great “Dracula” movies out there, sure, but also art-house nightmares, mainstream action movies, silly comedies, Neo-westerns, heartwarming romances and more. And if you ask us, these are the very, very best.

Released in 1978, George A. Romero's "Martin" follows a young man, played by John Amplas, who thinks he is a vampire. Martin doesn't have any vampiric powers, so instead, he stalks around drugging women, cutting them with a razor blade, and then drinking their blood. Eventually, Martin decides to start preying on criminals – but his lifestyle is further complicated when he falls in love with a housewife. Second Sight Films is restoring "Martin" for a new 4K release, but that's not the only "Martin" news. Michael Gornick, the film's cinematographer, has revealed on social media that Romero's rarely-seen three-and-a-half-hour director's cut of the film has just...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re chatting with writer and podcast host Gena Radcliffe. As one half of the Kill by Kill podcast with co-host Patrick Hamilton, Radcliffe pokes fun at slasher tropes while also giving due to the characters so often forgotten in some of our favorite franchises. You can also find Radcliffe over at The Spool, where she writes about horror and a vast array of other pop culture, including music, film, and television.
Radcliffe’s selection for this month takes us to Western Pennsylvania to spend some time with the late, great, George A. Romero. But rather than spending time with hordes of the undead, we’re getting to know the world’s saddest vampire in the 1978 psychological horror film Martin. George A. Romero’s masterpiece has become an iconic picture in the history of cinema, and one of the most beloved horror films of all time. While it wasn’t the first zombie movie, it certainly changed the landscape of what a zombie movie could be. The world of horror films lost two of its most important and influential figures recently with the passing of filmmaking geniuses George Romero and Tobe Hooper. Although the careers of these two great artists can fill (and have filled) entire books, I’d like to briefly mention their most important works and pay my respects to them both.
When I was around ten or eleven-years-old, I had snuck out of bed late one night to watch some old movie on TV; a Tarzan flick I think it was. In order to avoid waking my parents, I had to keep the volume on the television set very low, but sit close to the set so that I could hear. As I sat alone in my parents’ dark living room waiting patiently for the commercials to end, a bunch of zombies appeared on the screen and quickly lurched forward with their arms outstretched!

The legendary director, who burst onto the scene in 1968 with Night Of The Living Dead, was admired both for his innovation and for the socio-political depth of his films, which helped to change public expectations of horror.
John Amplas and George Romero in Martin
As well as his zombie films, Romero won critical acclaim for Martin, about a young man whose obsession with vampires leads to deadly violence. He stepped outside the bounds of the genre for 1981's Knightriders, about the leader of a Medieval reenactment troupe who gradually loses his mind, and made a documentary about the young Oj Simpson. In a 2008 interview with Eye For Film with Tony Sullivan, he told us: "Martin and.

Cinema’s Hidden Pearls – Part I
By Alex Simon
One of nature’s rarest items, a pearl is produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. Truly flawless pearls are infrequently produced in nature, and as a result, the pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable. Hidden pearls exist in the world of movies, as well: films that, in spite of being brilliantly crafted and executed, never got the audience they deserved beyond a cult following.
Here are a few of our favorite hidden pearls in the world of film:
1. Night Moves (1975)
Director Arthur Penn hit three home runs in a row with the trifecta of Bonnie & Clyde, Alice’s Restaurant and Little Big Man,...

Though he’s most well-known for revolutionizing the zombie genre with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero also filmed a unique take on vampires with 1977’s Martin. Following the titular character’s vampire-like serial killer streak in Pittsburgh, the movie features a memorable soundtrack that’s now being released on a limited edition vinyl with new artwork and liner notes:
Press Release - “February 2nd 2015, NYC, NY – Ship to Shore PhonoCo. announced today that the score from George A. Romero’s Martin, once named “one of the top 100 coolest soundtracks of all time” by Mojo Magazine, will be available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978.
“Donald Rubinstein contributes a haunting, melancholy score punctuated with sudden, passionate riffs. It is the perfect accompaniment to this tale of lost souls in a barren, nearly post-apocalyptic environment.” – Roy Frumkes, producer of Street Trash and director of Document of the Dead.

This Tuesday, genre fans have a Lot to look forward to, as we have a trifecta of horror classics coming from Scream Factory, as well as the new 4K restoration of the 1920 German classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from Kino Lorber.
As if that’s not enough, Image Entertainment is releasing the Limited Edition Fifth Dimension box set for The Twilight Zone this week, the cult classics Moontrap, Christmas Evil and Trancers are all making their HD debuts and we’ve got a few indie films being released on November 18th too, including Automata, Housebound and Ragnarok.
Spotlight Titles:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari- 4K Restored (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray & DVD)
In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world.

Back in 2007 I posted my list of the top ten Stephen King adaptations. It's always funny to revisit such lists because there will always be one or two placements that have me scratching my head. In this case it would be the placement of 1408 (still a good adaptation mind you) over both The Shining and The Green Mile. However, the placing of George A. Romero's The Dark Half at #3 would still remain, an opinion again solidified after revisiting the 1993 Jekyll and Hyde thriller on Shout Factory's new Blu-ray release. It's always been easier for filmmakers to adapt King's less fantastical stories to the big screen, films such as The Shawshank Redemption, Misery and even The Green Mile, which is definitely fantastical, but not to the extent of so many other King stories. However, when it comes to the weirder stories, it's not just the narratives that have that particular...

George Romero is best known to horror film fans for his Living Dead films. My personal favorite, and what I consider to be his best film, is Martin (1976), a highly under-rated film shot just prior to what is perhaps his most beloved film, Dawn of the Dead (1978). The title character is portrayed with understated grace by actor John Amplas as a young man whose uncle is convinced that he … Continue reading →

When it comes to movie monsters, there is no comparison. Dinner with a zombie would inevitably get messy. Frankenstein's Monster is a lousy conversationalist. Werewolves are boring three weeks out of every four.
But vampires? Now you're talking. Vampires are suave, stylish and sexy. Even when they turn on you, you get the benefit of eternal youth and an excuse to stay up all night, every night.
With Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston now playing hipster bloodsuckers in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, we look back at previous screen vampires to discover what makes them so cool.

The simplest way to become a vampire is to don fake teeth and fangs very much, I vant to suck your blood. Yet Max Schreck went much further, perfecting a chillingly inhuman look as Nosferatu with a bald head, rat's ears and long nails.

When George A. Romero's Day of the Dead premiered on Friday, July 19, 1985, it was released in the same fashion that his Dawn of the Dead was distributed seven years earlier, which is to say without an MPAA rating. The poster sported the caveat (or allure, depending on your point of view): “Due to scenes of violence, which may be considered shocking, no one under 17 admitted.” Widely considered as an independent maverick in the film industry, Mr. Romero once again decided not to submit his film to the ratings board knowing full well that they would demand extensive cuts, leaving most of Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero’s best work on the cutting room floor. One of the major problems with releasing a film unrated is that the perception is that it is, in fact, a self-imposed X-rating. An “X” generally means death at the box office,...

Last week, I embarked on a fun little assignment to pull together a batch of teaser trailers for horror sequels; the one criteria being that they all had to feature exclusive footage specifically shot and used just for that trailer. One of the greatest aspects of putting together articles like this is that after I finish them, I like to open up the discussion amongst my Facebook friends and see if we agree or if they have other suggestions I could’ve possibly gone with. While I already had my horror sequels picked out, I got a handful of terrific recommendations for teaser trailers featuring original footage for non-sequel horror movies. So, low and behold, I thought these awesome teasers warranted a separate article and man, some of these are cool as all hell! Special thanks to Jared Rivet, Jeff Nelson & Sean Keller for pointing out quite a few of these to me,...

My first impression of Fangoria Legends Present George Romero was a post on FaceBook. I wasn’t taken with the cover, and quite honestly I asked myself more than once why we needed a full length retrospective on the great George Romero as sponsored by the juggernaut of horror mags. Haven’t we heard every goddamn thing that Fango has to say about Romero? Was this just another cash grab that magazines of our genre love to make from time to time? Perhaps I have become too cynical, but when I see the big three (Romero, Carpenter, Craven) featured on anything labeled “special limited edition” I’m thinking who’s got their hand out. Production on Ombis is in full swing, and there's lots of new stuff to share: Teaser Trailer #2, a video interview with makeup FX artist Phill Beith, and a photo from The Buffalo Comic & Pop Culture Con with John Amplas, star of George A. Romero’s Martin, Creepshow, and Dawn of the Dead.
Ombis is currently a quarter of the way through filming, and the cast and crew have been traveling around the Western New York area gathering interest in the film, which is how they met up with Amplas, a particularly special encounter for the film's director Adam R. Steigert, as it was Romero's Dawn that inspired him to go into the film business.
Synopsis:
DefTone Pictures Studios’ Ombis is a 1950's styled sci-fi movie set in modern times. It's the tale of an invasion of an alien virus which lands via meteorite in the small town of Metzburgh. Metzburgh...
